About us

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is one among the oldest professional engineering organizations, consistently providing opportunities for the development of civil engineering professionals. We seek to emerge as a recognized expert advocate for responsible and sustainable development of infrastructures and the natural environment.

Here at ASCE NITK Chapter, we strive to provide a platform for students to understand and explore civil and construction engineering, considering aspects of intuition and sustainability. Civil engineering is a demanding field that requires a broad and evolving knowledge base to prepare and successfully overcome challenges transcending generations. We work actively with professors and industry experts to strengthen educational requirements for future professionals.

Some of Our Projects

Accident Analysis on a stretch of NH-55

India faces one of the highest number of road accidents in entire world. While a certain number of accidents are expected in a highway, owing to the imperfect nature of humans, it is important to know if there is an underlying cause for these accidents, other than human errors. For this, the information of expected and actual accident is of utmost importance.

This project aims to compare the predicted number of accidents in a road, with the actual numbers, and draw conclusions on whether the severity of accidents in the target highway is expected.

Retrofitting of Reinforced Concrete Frames using Steel Bracings

The use of steel bracings is one of the most common method of improving a structure’s overall strength, especially against seismic loads. The addition of bracings may, however, affect the stresses distribution on the structure, and lead to increase in local member stresses. When providing retrofits, this information of how adding bracings affects the structure must be known.

This project aims to investigate the effects of adding different types bracings on the seismic response of an RCC frame structure.

Integrating ML Algorithms in Google Earth Engine to Analyse Land Usage Patterns

Classification of satellite imagery is an important research area studied extensively for remote sensing applications. Land-Use and Land-Cover (LU/LC) Maps is one of the tools used for this. Describing the categorization of human activities and natural elements on the landscape, they provide information to help users to understand the current landscape.

This project aims to utilize GEE to generate accurate LU/LC maps with Machine Learning algorithms and study the pattern of land cover changes in and around NITK.
