"To bring the BJJ community together and create a central hub for jiu-jitsu athletes. The old philosophy of each gym keeping their techniques secret is gone."
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu thrives on shared knowledge, mutual growth, and the connections formed on and off the mats. BJJ Network was built to honour that.
BJJ Network differentiates itself from other resources as its goal is to keep jiu-jitsu practitioners training with intention, not just browsing gyms or mindlessly consuming content. Instead of imitating a directory or a social media feed, it aims to actively connect practitioners through roll requests and training partner matching based on skill level and availability.
This shifts the user's experience from passive discovery to real-world action — reducing the friction between wanting to train and actually stepping onto the mats with the right people, wherever you are in the world.
The intelligent system tracks the training sessions you log and provides an overview of your recent skill focus, as well as providing technique suggestions based on your current learning trajectory.
BJJ Network was born from a shared frustration and a shared passion — two training partners who wanted the same thing.
My journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in early 2011 at Renzo Gracie's in Cape Town where I was living for a few months. A housemate asked if I wanted to try a BJJ class and after my first lesson I was hooked. I spent the next two months getting beaten up every day and learning as much as I could. When I returned to London, I signed up at Roger Gracie's in Ladbroke Grove and trained there through 2011 and into 2012.
I had to stop due to an old knee injury and, although I wanted to return, life got in the way. Fast forward 11 years — I picked up the Gi again and found New Wave Academy Training Centre, where I've been training ever since. I compete consistently in local and IBJJF tournaments, most recently at the European Championships in Lisbon where I claimed gold in my division and silver in the absolute. My passion for travel always has me looking for a BJJ gym wherever I land — and coincidentally, my co-founder Niinoi had the exact same idea at the exact same time. That's where the vision for BJJ Network was born.
My journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu started by accident. After retiring from football, I needed a new outlet and decided to take up MMA. Then, just before Covid, I injured my back doing deadlifts and was out for 8 months. During recovery I decided to give up MMA and give Jiu-Jitsu a go — and never looked back.
Like Michael, I have a passion for travelling and I started building an app for myself that would locate BJJ gyms wherever I was in the world. When I mentioned it to Michael, he told me he was working on the same idea. As they say — great minds think alike. We decided to team up and build it together, and BJJ Network was born.
