When the war in Ukraine broke out, and Europe was hesitant in the first year, I thought alright, this is a surprise to everyone and of course we need time to prepare.

Now 4 years have passed, and we are 450 million EU and 69 million UK citizens still standing on the sidelines, telling 38 million Ukrainians they should fight 133 million Russians on their own.

We could end this war. Instead we keep pretending that it is fine to let Ukraine take all the punches.

I find that profoundly shameful.

Yet another day of screaming at digital enshitiffication:

1. My coworkers and I are in a car driving to FOSDEM.
2. We pull up to charge the car.
3. Charging station REQUIRES you to use an app, no option to just pay with a card.
4. We try to install the stupid app. We carry phones running:
- GrapheneOS
- GrapheneOS
- GrapheneOS
- LineageOS, postmarketOS, iOS
5. Neither of our phones meet requirements to install the stupid app (Play Integrity API).
6. My iPhone can't install the app, because it's "Not available in your country".
7. We give up and drive to another charging station.

This is NOT how you introduce applications, "Circle K" :akko_scream:

I was kind of jealous of the Elixir community for having such an awesome job orchestration framework like Oban: reliable background job processing with great observability and cron scheduling. Lo and behold, Soren made a version for Python: oban.pro/articles/introducing-

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I *really* don't want European Hyperscalers to be a thing. Hyperscalers are at best a market/regulation failure and at worst a huge risk to create another one of these "too big to fail" scenarios.

I want a sane and healthy landscape of small- to midsize competitors in the hosting landscape.

It makes everything more robust and reliable.

Not sure why this is not a shared understanding anymore.

DigiD MAG NIET IN AMERIKAANSE HANDEN VALLEN

Just upgraded for #macOS 26. The UI reminds me of the period around 2002 when teenagers would create 'cool' GNOME and KDE themes with zero reference to usability. Except with more transparency. So like some of the early Compiz stuff, which was far more about 'the technology allows this' than wondering whether anyone would actually want it.

Safari windows are all totally different colours based on the background colour for the page. And they've lost the app icon in the bar (you know, the thing that's really important for Mac apps because it's the file proxy that lets you do direct manipulation?), so recognising them is hard.

It's a mess. Apple needs to seriously think about how they ever promoted people to leadership rôles the UI group when they were so clearly unqualified.

EDIT: People always complain about new macOS / OS X. I've been using OS X since 10.1, and written two books about Cocoa programming. I assumed the complaints were overblown. If anything, they're understated. It's so bad in a bunch of totally avoidable rookie errors that anyone who has done one undergraduate HCI course would know to avoid.

I felt that Microsoft Copilot, formerly known as Office, could use a mascot. So I asked Copilot to design something in the spirit of Clippy.

Let me introduce you to Sloppy, a cheerful slightly gooey assistant with glasses and a headset.

#Microslop

Hey Guys, gals, people and pets, Satya Nadella is getting tired of people calling AI Slop output AI Slop. If everyone can stop that's be great as it is upsetting Microslops share holders.

Don't start calling Microslop Microslop or use the #microslop tag as it might burst the AI bubble and then Microslop might have to take SlopPilot out of Windows. As you know, that would be terrible.

At Cisco in 1999, I learned to troubleshoot networking issues starting from layer 1 up. Twenty-seven years later, debugging my home WiFi, I ignored that lesson and wasted time fiddling with settings and firmware. Turns out the cable between the router and access point was bad.

Snowy runs in The Netherlands are rare, but when they happen, the forest looks magical.

In the UN Security Council we now have two countries that openly violate international law by invading sovereign countries, are not member of the statute of Rome, thus not bound by the ICJ/ICC (International Court of Justice, International Criminal Court) but still have veto power. Le sigh.

When China invades Taiwan sometime in the coming years, it will say the US has no moral authority to oppose its takeover, and to the degree that the US is the Trump administration, China will be right.
