Novels in Translation: We Do Not Part

| Offsite

Join the Ohio Center for the Book at Clevo Books (1026 Euclid Ave), a downtown Cleveland bookstore specializing in translated works of literature, for a discussion on We Do Not Part by Han Kang, and translated from the Korean by e. yaewon and Paige Aniyah Morris.  From the publisher:  One winter morning in Seoul, Kyungha receives an urgent message from her friend Inseon to visit her at the hospital. Inseon has injured herself in an accident, and she begs Kyungha to return to Jeju Island, where she lives, to save her beloved pet—a white bird called Ama. A snowstorm hits the island when Kyungha arrives. She must reach Inseon’s house at all costs, but the icy wind and squalls slow her down as night begins to fall. She wonders if she will arrive in time to save the animal—or even survive the terrible cold that envelops her with every step. Lost in a world of snow, she doesn’t yet suspect the vertiginous plunge into darkness that awaits her at her friend’s house. Blurring the boundaries between dream and reality, We Do Not Part powerfully brings to light the lost voices of the past to save them from oblivion. Both a hymn to an enduring friendship and an argument for remembering, it is the story of profound love in the face of unspeakable pain—and a celebration of life, however fragile it might be. Ohio Center for the Book's Get Graphic! Comics Discussion: Graphic Rage by Aubrey Hirsch

This year, the Ohio Center for the Book’s Get Graphic! Comics Discussions focus on Ohio creators. This month, we’re reading Graphic Rage: Comics on Gender, Justice, and Life as a Woman in America by Aubrey Hirsch (Cleveland). Hirsch’s collection of 25 graphic essays explores “the absurdities and injustices that women know all too well, turning rage into razor-sharp wit and pushing back against the world’s worst takes.” (from the publisher) Discussions are held 6:00 pm the first Thursday of the month. Our conversation will take place at Forest City Brewery (2135 Columbus Road, Cleveland, OH 44113).

Novels in Translation: The Summer My Mother Had Green Eyes

| Offsite

Join the Ohio Center for the Book at Clevo Books (1026 Euclid Ave), a downtown Cleveland bookstore specializing in translated works of literature, for a discussion on The Summer My Mother Had Green Eyes by Tatiana Țîbuleac, and translated from the Romanian by Monica Cure.  From the publisher:  Aleksy still remembers the last summer he spent with his mother in Northern France. At eighteen, eager to fly the nest and escape a family still grief-stricken by the death of his sister years earlier, these lazy months in the countryside are akin to torture. And then, his mother tells him she’s dying. Fourteen years later, at the urging of his psychiatrist, Aleksy relives the memory of the summer when everything changed, shaken once again by the emotions that besieged him when they arrived in that small French village. For fans of Claire Keegan and Elena Ferrante, this is a story of reconciliation, of three months in which mother and son finally lay down their weapons to make peace with each other and with themselves.
