One of the side benefits of the job as I have it is the whole day's spent offline. I've got wifi access so I can technically use my phone to browse the internet, but there's no point in trying to browse on an iPhone for any length of time. As such, the internet happens without me. A couple of times, I've scheduled large numbers of posts to my Tumblr so when I get back, they'll be waiting for me, but otherwise, I leave the internet alone.

It's pretty wonderful.

It's not even the hours offline so much as it's good to get reminded that the internet belongs on my computer and not on any device that fits in my hand by living in such a reality, and I should do my best to leave the internet in my apartment and not carry it with me.

I'm kinda tempted to make a Wikipedia account so I can update Mary Lambert's discography - her page is missing the singles Tempest from last year and Minneapolis from last week.

imho they're both really good songs.

What I Just Finished Reading: Since last Wednesday I have read/finished reading: Nothing. This week's meme is exactly the same as last week because I have made very little progress with reading.

What I am Currently Reading: Still working on Husband Material (London Calling) by Alexis Hall.

What I Plan to Read Next: Probably the other library book I have out because I'm running out of renewals on these. o_O

I hit Walmart while I was downtown and the bank drive-thru later on.

I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, emptied the dishwasher, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and shaved. I roasted a chicken for supper, with mashed potatoes and corn. The worst part is picking all the meat off of it after.

I finished rewatching the second ep of Heated Rivalry and some House Hunters International.

Temps started out at 9.5(F) (and dropped to 9.0 before I left the house) and reached 21.7. The sun was shining but it was C-O-L-D.

Irony: I had checked the two week weather forecast and was pleased that we wouldn't have snow again for almost two weeks. Then Pip comes home and tells me about the N'oreaster that's going to hit around Sunday. Snow totals depend on how far out the storm stays, but could be more than we got this past weekend. Really DNW. Also, WTF, TWC app, why is this information not on the front page to give me a heads up?!!

Mom Update:

Mom was just okay when I saw her. She complained that she feels good one day (yesterday) and then not great the next (today). She had an appointment with the Hospice nurse after I left and planned to ask if she was ever going to feel better, or if it’s basically, she’s going to feel like shit until she dies from the cancer. I’m afraid it’s the second, since the nurse basically told her not to worry about eating as she’s not expending much energy (if she was going to get well she’d need to eat) and when mom asked if the nurse could guesstimate how much time she had left, the answer was a very discouraging, ‘not less than a month’. WTF does that mean?!!

I wrote out a check (and put it in the mailbox), made a deposit, and added some tax papers to the folder for 2025. I finally returned the laundry I’d done for her last week. o_O And brought some groceries she’d asked for. There’s little I can do to make her feel better, so doing these tasks for her is something.

When I called her later, both Sisters A and S were there, so that's good.

First off, the top ten Jonas Brothers collaborations from 2025! During the Greetings from Your Hometown Tour, the Jonas Brothers invited different artists/bands to every show. Each time it was a total surprise. The collaborations were a part of the larger theme of coming together as family and enjoying americana and also reminiscing about the 2000s. In some instances, the bands that played together hadn't even played live in years! I really loved seeing the Jonas Brothers pay homage to all these bands that came before them, and I also loved seeing them share the stage so humbly. Nearly all of my favorite bands were invited onto the tour!

10 vids under the cut )

I've also put together my top ten 5 Seconds of Summer songs of all time! They just dropped their new album (my top two songs are off that album) and they're going on tour this summer and I'm STOKED.

01. Evolve
Out for a week
Freak energy
You know what I mean

^This song is saying something about gender and bisexuality (and/or pegging??) and partying culture and simple desires and I could go on - but it's also a BOP.

02. Telephone Busy
World is spinning, I'm not dizzy
Call you, but your telephone busy
I been thinking, do you miss me?

^This song is probably going to inspire my new username!

03. Easier (featuring Luke tied up and still singing without any explanation. And his makeup is SO hot)
04. Jet Black Heart (off of their second studio album back in 2015 but it still SENDS me)
05. More
06. Lover of Mine (The most romantic song they've written!)
07. Ghost of You
08. Moving Along (live version because of Calum's curls and Luke's nail polish)
09. Old Me
10. Ghost (the song they wrote after Liam Payne passed away)

Nine to five.

I'm wanted for three full days a week at the day gig for the next three weeks, minimum. I'd be foolish to turn it down. I'd also be foolish to leave other people in the lurch and hanging, even if all that's happened is a couple of emails. That it's a project with a defined end - eventually, they're going to run out of books - helps a little bit in assessing the coming days.

To my pride, last week I'd suggested they move the children's books they wanted to save to the closet in one of the kid's rooms. They decided to pack them up to move them, so last week I packed them up - too much per box to be practical, but finally contained. Today they said they wanted them in one of the kid's rooms, so I unpacked, sorted, and put them all away, and they were deeply pleased with the end results.

There's a lot to get through, and there's rooms of books in this place. They're coming out of closets, they turn up in boxes, they're hiding behind each other, and I haven't even touched the other side of the apartment. Rarely do I look forward to having to be at work in the morning, but then, rarely do I have this much fun at the job.

The snowstorm is over, and it seems we ended up on the low end of the predictions -- I think we got 10 - 12 inches altogether over two days of nearly constant snow. The guy that plows our roads has been through a couple of times and I'm sure I could get out if I needed to, but I don't need to, so I'm staying put for the time being. I might try to make it into the little local grocery store tomorrow -- I still have plenty of food, but am out of some of my usual fresh salad veg, and I do like my salads. Plus, I suppose I should try to get a little fresh air, although I'm not sure how much 10 degree fresh air I can really stand.

The next ten days or so are forecast to be FUCKING COLD. (That is an official meteorological term.) I suppose people in, like, Siberia might disagree, but this is what I'm looking at for the coming week:

screenshot of weather forecast

I do not like it! I do not approve!

But I suppose I can't really complain. The power never went out, the propane tanks got filled on Friday so I won't run out of propane, I've got firewood, the roads are plowed, I'm perfectly safe and comfy here in my little house with my warm kitty. So I will just hunker down and wait it out as patiently as possible.

The thing about the changes made in the new miniseries of The Seven Dials Mystery is that they seem motivated by a couple of motives that strike me as unwise and illegitimate:

  • to make a rollicking comedy-adventure-farce way more serious and solemn and sad

  • to make sure the main heroine is not motivated by spunk, excitement, or sheer desire to solve crimes, but by revenge for the man she loooooooooved

  • to make the heroine just the MOST speshul, not because of what she achieves or her choices and actions, but because of who she innately is

The Day in Spikedluv (Monday, Jan 26)

There was no going downtown today because of the snow. Not a surprise; I’d planned for it.

I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. More leftovers for supper. (Leftovers are now gone because they got packed up to go up to the garage with Pip, so I’m going to have to start cooking again. o_O)

I rewatched about half of the second ep of Heated Rivalry, as well as Home Town and some House Hunters International. Dr. Pol was my evening background tv. I took a brief nap again, even though we slept in again this morning. It seems like the more sleep I get the more tired I am. o_O

I tried to upload a photo of this mug but Imgur didn’t like the WEBP file. It’s really cute and made me chuckle. (Link goes to chewy.com.)

Temps started out at 13.8(F) (a heatwave!) and reached 23.2. All the schools in our county (and surrounding counties) are closed. Pip shoveled the deck again and plowed the driveway and our walking paths. Then he went up to the garage to clean out the parking lot there. THEN he ‘cleaned up’ around the house with the tracker and snow blower. He was out there for an hour, stopped for some soup for lunch, then back out for another half hour. He was a popsicle when he was done.

ETA: I forgot to say that we got about 16" out of the storm, so not great, but not as bad as it could have been. Thank goodness Pip has the large equipment necessary to move it all.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded better today. Sister S had gone down to visit her despite the roads not being very good at the time. She also had a call from my brother. And she said she had some good food that sat well, so that’s good.

No time left.

Challenge #12

Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life. Appreciate them in bullet points, prose, poetry, a moodboard, a song... whatever moves you!

The first person I lost in fandom - really lost, not moving blogging platforms and falling out of touch, not drifting apart, not a falling-out so extreme there's no talking anymore - wasn't someone I knew well. I knew people who knew her well and we'd spoken in person at BASCon a couple times, and because we had nametags, we could greet each other easily. But between one year and another, something went wrong - complications with surgery, as I recall - and she wasn't there anymore.

I've since lost a lot more people. Some I'd spoken with frequently, some who were friends of friends. Some I knew by wallet name, some where I couldn't tell you any more than what fandoms we shared. Sometimes it was a surprise and sometimes it wasn't unexpected. A few times people told me, a few times I wondered about them and went to check and learned that way, a couple times it so happened I'd see something they'd made or stumble over their account and then learn they'd passed on years ago.

Late last month, someone I knew pretty well - we'd chat a few times a week, pass links onto each other - disappeared off Tumblr. Deactivating their blog, deleting their Archive of Our Own account. They'd been undergoing some fairly drastic health issues and had occasionally stepped away from the internet for weeks at a time, and after a few days of worry, it was seeing the deleted AO3 account that actually made me feel a bit better. Tumblr's a place where deactivation can happen willy-nilly, but AO3 requires deliberate effort. It let me tell myself they made the choice to step away as far as they could, rather than them leaving without providing a forwarding address. Tonight I found someone else I knew pretty well - we shared dinner in London once - who'd stopped posting over two years ago had their Tumblr account deactivated, also. Maybe they stepped far away. So I tell myself.

I knew I'd lose people someday. It's part and parcel of knowing people - knowing that they'll leave. When I got into fandom, I mostly made friends with people older than me; I've lately looked around and realized I'm mostly making friends with people my own age or younger. I don't know how long any of them are going to stay in my life. I know it's not going to last forever, or even as long as I'd wish it would. But I know they're here right now. And I know they've made my fandom life better, no matter how much time we had together.

The Day in Spikedluv (Sunday, Jan 25)

I slept in again until 7:30am! Though it wasn’t a nice constant sleep because Pip got up due to coughing and he is not quiet when he is up and about. (I, otoh, am very quiet because I want him to stay in bed a while so I have some peace and quiet for myself. o_O) I did eventually fall back to sleep, which is when I had a strange dream in which I could understand Midnight. In the dream I was like, hmm, I guess being possessed by a cat that one time means I can now understand cats! When I woke up I was like, when was I possessed by a cat?!!!

I forgot to keep you all updated on the 'cat door' situation. When Pip told L (Ian's dad) what he planned to do, L said, why don't you just cut a hole in the wall? o_O So Pip took a chainsaw and cut a hole in the wall. I feel like I'm living in a real life episode of 'You might be a redneck if . . .' At least it worked! Pip's sister saw (on the cameras they installed) that a black and white cat had entered the garage! So she took up kitty litter and cat food for it this morning before the storm got too bad. I will keep you updated as more animals make the garage their home or the cat meets the dogs. o_O

I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, emptied the dishwasher, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and changed kitty litter (it’s Sunday!). It was another no-cooking day because of all the leftovers; today it was leftover meatloaf.

What’s a girl to do on a snowy day but rewatch the first ep of Heated Rivalry?!! I also watched some House Hunters International and took a brief nap.

Temps started out at 3(F) (according to Pip; I didn’t see it because of sleeping in) and reached 5.2. The snow started nice and light about 8am. Pip was like, I hope it stays this light, but we didn’t think that would happen as the snow was supposed to start coming in heavier around 2pm. It didn’t seem to get any heavier, and yet, it still built up like crazy.

I didn’t have to do any shoveling (Pip said he’d do the sidewalk with the blower), but he was out there twice, shoveling the deck, then plowing (he brought the plow truck home, so used that instead of the blower because it is warmer inside the truck than outside on the tractor getting snow blown on you), plus he went up to the garage to clean that out so there wasn’t as much for tomorrow.

Mom Update:

Mom didn’t sound great when I talked to her. Sister A visited her early in the morning because she had to take Ireland to her BF’s house, then pick her up again, but mom was feeling very blue. She hates this kind of weather, even though she couldn’t go anywhere anyway, it make her feel more isolated. My brother also called her, and she thanked me for calling her. I was almost afraid she was going to start crying. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
