DJ Cable - Notorious B.I.G. Mix (Weekly Mix #35)

Image

For those who have followed the blog since the start, you may be aware that throughout 2008, I did the "Weekly Mix" series, where, as you've already sussed out, I provided the Internets with a short mix each and every week.

Seeing as its the 15th anniversary of Biggie's passing, I thought I'd repost this for your listening pleasure. This one was done in week #35 of 2008, and is made up of some of my favourite B.I.G. tracks, containing a couple of rare tracks.

R.I.P. Heavy D

Image

R.I.P. Heavy D, who passed away earlier today at the age of 44.

He left behind a classic back catalogue of albums; for those that are either too young to remember him, or were simply unaware of the music he made, I highly recommend you take the time to listen to albums such as Big Tyme, Peaceful Journey and Blue Funk.

Proof "The Fizzo" (Prod. by J Dilla)

Image

Yesterday, In remembrance and tribute to Proof on the 5th anniversary of his passing, Paul Rosenberg dropped a previously unreleased joint from Proof and the late great J Dilla.

Dating back to 1994, the track also features T3 of Slum Village on the chorus.

In his words:

As promised, here is another previously unreleased (as far as I know) track from Proof & Dilla, called “The Fizzo.” I heard about this track before I ever actually heard it from a very excited DJ Head back in ’94, right around the time that F.C. (Funky Cowboys) was created. In his typical fashion when he had heard something that nobody else had, Head just giggled and said “man, Proof and Jaydee got this new record, man…” When I heard it I knew what Head was so amped-up about, these guys really had a crazy chemistry together. That’s T3 of Slum Village on the chorus.

I don’t want to do anything but remember P and his music today, so hopefully this will put you in the same headspace. Enjoy- until next year: BIG PROOF FOREVER.

RIP Dilla & Proof.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson

Image

If you take away the crazy plastic surgery, the scandals, and the erratic behaviour, you're left with a legendary artist, whose impact on the music game was incredible. I can't think of a single person who didn't want to learn how to do the moonwalk. "Thiller" was - and still is - a classic album.

R.I.P. the King of Pop.

P.S. For those in central London, there's apparently a "mass moonwalk" occurring at Liverpool Street later today at 6pm. More info here.

BONUS! A couple of my favourite MJ tracks...

EXTRA BONUS! An 8-Bit version of "Beat It"
