Spotlighting the impact of truancy policies

EdSource’s truancy story played some role in refining AB 461 and the penalization parents face, according to someone EdSource interviewed. An earlier version of the bill focused only on addressing the impact of truancy on public benefits, but it was reworked to also repeal a criminal offense related to truancy. This happened after a combination of EdSource’s reporting on truancy plus news about many families keeping their children home due to a significant surge of immigration raids in 2025. The bill was signed into law in October 2025.
