I wrote a promo introduction for "High Potential" for [community profile] snowflake_challenge and I'm copying it here so more folks can see it. This show has a good set of awesome female characters. \o/

High Potential

Overview

"High Potential" is a crime dramedy based around Morgan Gillory. She is highly gifted with an IQ of 160, and like many gifted people, most folks refuse to put up with her -- hence "high potential" being a mockery. Average adults don't like smart adults any better than average children like smart children, with predictably bad results. Thus she has wound up working as a cleaning lady at a police station. This leads her to pointing out an error in an investigation, which eventually brings her to work for the police as a civilian consultant.

Today's writing

It's Sunny and single digits here today. Unlike Nashville(NW of us) we had minimal damage. I am grateful it wasn't as bad as it could have been, unlike a chitton of folks online who are complaining about it. Gee, unlike other places, you didn't die or get injured, your property didn't get damaged.
Stop your flippn WHINING!!!!!!
I guess Tennessee has more in common with my old stomping grounds than just being a Red State MAGA demesne.
Stay warm and dry out there!

The rise of blockchain-based "coin" economies, and the buying into them by the lower-middle class, is a direct result of them feeling shut out of the standard avenues of commerce for their young working lives.

From their point of view, boomers and tech magnates own and control the economy, and have found so many ways to twist it in their favor that it's nearly impossible for a young person to get established.

So, why wouldn't these people embrace things like Bitcoin?

If they instinctively believe that all currencies are scams, even the so-called "regulated" ones, then walking into the Shitcoin Casino doesn't seem like a change to them. Except perhaps the newness and obscurity of it can give them some breathing space from the chokehold of previous generations. You don't have to gain enough power to exploit everyone around you, you just have to be sneaky and fast enough to exploit enough of your own peers.

This exact line of thought is also why "prediction markets" - i.e. legalized gambling over an infinite variety of increasingly niche claims - has caught on at the same time. Everything is a race to beat public perception, and scam or be scammed, because productivity and objective truth are both traps for suckers. (Also, fighting your job to unionize can be violent and precarious, whereas blowing half your wages on DraftKings might make you rich.)

Hooray; another ugly monster for the next generation to fight. I might be a little too old and cranky at this point to care.

Thought for the day: Inner wiring

Imagine a person who was born without the ability to hear. Ask yourself “what does their interior monologue sound like?”

You can tax your imagination trying to answer this, but you can also do another thought exercise that might explain why the question is a trap:

Imagine a new species of animals that communicate with each other through wireless signals, broadcast directly from one mind to the next, without anything visible or audible occurring. To be clear, this is not like using a telephone. They're not sending the sound of spoken words on some other frequency. The information that passes between them has no real equivalent in audible sound at all. You could try recording it and then playing it back as audio but it would sound like garbled hash to your ears.

Imagine that the animals call this activity “wiring”, and they can understand each other quite well using it.

Now imagine that, like you, these animals have an inner monologue -- the equivalent of what happens in your mind when you think a bunch of words, to figure something out, without actually speaking. But it's not exactly the same thing, because their primary method of communication is "wiring". So appropriately enough, when they think about sending signals without actually doing it, they call it “inner wiring”.

Now ask them what their “inner wiring” would “wire” like if they couldn’t “wire”.

The question is crazy because you don't know what the noun is, what the adjective means, or what the verb is doing. So you have to throw all that away. What you're really asking is, "how do you communicate with yourself, if you can't use the units of expression and reasoning that you need to communicate with others?"

It's obvious that you can think without "inner wiring". You yourself are proof of this. Want to know what it would be like? You have an answer: It would be like you. And yet, you can still think quite complicated things without engaging a wireless transmitter ... or opening your mouth.

You're using something adjacent to - underneath - those sensory means of communicating. It would be there, even if those means were stripped away. But here's a fun riddle for you: What would thinking be like, if all those sensory tools were stripped away? I don't mean, "what if you were suddenly struck deaf," I mean, "what if you somehow learned to think without having any senses at all?"

Give us even the faintest, most tenuous sense - anything at all - and with time and willpower we can conjure the most amazing thoughts. But what if there was nothing? I rather suspect there would be no thought either.

And so we arrive at ... "Sum, ergo cogitare possum". René Descartes would be proud?? Hmm.

Thought for the day: Social problem

Jan. 26th, 2026 10:23 pm

[personal profile] garote
In about five years, our culture will discover a new social problem, where groups of (mostly terminally-online) people socially engage with each other and the outside world the same way they engage with the AI bots they use for their hobbies and careers.

Think of it less like a communication style and more like a mental disorder. It will go beyond simple speech patterns and tactics; these people will start to see other people as chatbots, and treat them in the same disposable, exploitable way.

This will be the thing that the current crop of new parents will panic about in their children.

I'm willing to bet it will mostly be a "young man" problem, because that group is historically a combination of:

1. Cynical about social interaction.
2. Not wise.
3. Hyperfocused on their work (because they need to survive and don't know how yet.)

Treating other people like chatbots will also have an ugly resemblance to a role young men are already vulnerable to, that women are all-too-familiar with: Being a pick-up artist. Say the right things to "game the system", and the reward is yours. Then hit "delete" and move on. Or, if it's not working, retreat back into your reassuringly pliant community of robots. Real people are "hard mode." Who wants that?

Oooeeeerrrr -- young people!!

Outside the cafe today I heard a bunch of kids in their early 20’s reminiscing about the "good old days" of being ten years old, talking about console games, bumper cars, candy bar fundraiser campaigns in school, and lemonade stands.

"Bruh, I made 120 dollars selling lemonade in one day. I sat outside with a guitar, bruh. In a chair."

"Nice bruh!"

"I was, like, learning how to play and I thought I was real good. So I’d make up songs about lemonade. And so many people walked by. One guy gave me a 20 dollar bill for a cup of lemonade, bruh."

"Haha! What!"

"I was like, what do I even do with this money? Can I take this? Bruh, he walked away without asking for change. I don’t even remember what I bought with it."

"My Dad’s friend is like, a gardener at Disneyland, bruh."

"You mean, a dream maker, or whatever they call them."

"Yeah bruh. He has a special card that’s green. All the normal people get cards when they go in, but his was green."

"Yeeeah!"

"He took us on the Toy Story ride when it wasn’t open for the public yet, bruh. It was so amazing, bruh, I was like, oh my god, I’m VIP at Disneyland.

"Ballin’ bruh."

"I was so ballin' bruh."

The speech patterns are so weird! I was packing up my bike so I heard a lot of it, and I wanted to make some kind of friendly comment, but I had no idea what to say. "Bruh, if I made 120 dollars at your age, I would have gone to Fry's Electronics and bought a hard drive."

(Long, confused, pause.) "Okay, sir."

It’s like ... a thousand hours of urban influencer prattle and braggadocio, flattened down and then used as a strainer, to create this very specific dialect, and so help me I know these people are smart - they’re Berkeley suburban kids, basically raised in luxury, with every resource at their disposal - yet I hear that dialect floating out of their mouths and I want to deduct five hundred points on the "reliable", "dependable", "interesting", and "experienced" scales, and start from the assumption that all they’re really good for is being crass consumers and working service-economy jobs, because they would slack off, and crap on, anything harder.

Yes, I am definitely too old, and I know it. What's amusing to me is, it's the dialect, not even the subject matter, that's messing with my head.

And also, yes: For a certain amount of time at that age, I slacked off, and crapped on, most of what adults claimed was worthwhile!

Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Anne Teldy, Carson Beckett, Radek Zelenka, Jennifer Keller
Rating: Explicit
Length: 18,013
Content Notes: Graphic depictions of violence. Jeannie, Rodney's sister, has died long before the story starts. Academic ethics are somewhat compromised!
Creator Links: Telesilla on AO3, helens78 on Audiofic Archive
Themes: Crack treated seriously, First time, Friends to lovers, Animal transformation, Werecreatures, Complete AU, Interspecies pairing, Research, Worldbuilding (I had difficulty finding actual tags to reflect some of these because while there's a minor character werewolf in this, most of the Weres aren't wolves.)

Summary: John Sheppard has had over twenty years to come to grips with the fact that every four or five weeks, he turns into a mountain lion. Like most Were, he accepts that that's just the way it is, and so he's not particularly interested when he learns that researchers at the local university are trying to to develop drugs that will help Were control their cycles. Then he meets Dr. Rodney McKay, a brilliant but irascible biochemist with reasons of his own for spearheading the university's Were research and John suddenly finds himself struggling with more than just his attraction to McKay.

Reccer's Notes: Werewolves, or in this case, Werecreatures in general, are a popular crack fantasy trope. This story's excellent as it turns the fantasy trope into a real minority of individuals having Were genes, forced to change cyclically to an animal form. In this story's interesting worldbuilding, Were are discriminated against and find it hard to get jobs and live as full members of society. John is a werecougar and he meets Rodney who's a scientist running a research trial to test a new drug intended to suppress mandatory cycling. The story is crack "taken seriously" as there's no fantasy element. This is a genetically-driven thing, with Were a slightly different species to humans. Their cycles vary according to gene expression, and aren't moon-driven. Plus, in this world, Telesilla shows the politics of discrimination against Were, with John initially resisting the research as he's angry that they're yet again being viewed as humans with a sickness that needs treatment. The story has lots of plot and drama, a great developing relationship with Rodney, and a satisfying conclusion. Very much recommended!

For the first time since - I want to say October 7th 2023, though technically it's 2014 - but 843 days after, as of today, there are finally no more hostages in Gaza, living or dead.

I legit didn't think we'd get here. I hoped, but realistically, I was sure some would still be missing forever, lost to the fog of war and time. The big weight off was in October this year, when the last living 20 came back, but now, today, the final marker, and something families - and hopefully, maybe, this country - can begin to try to recover and move on, for real.

(Recovery also means getting rid of current leadership amen, which, easier hoped for than done. But I hope.)

Time to start collecting - packing away - tossing out - all of my yellow ribbons and flags, from my car, from my porch, from my bag. It's about time.

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

I like the [community profile] get_knitted crafting comm on DW. There are a lot of very talented folks who always have a least one (if not a host) of projects going on. I like reading about their progress and how they overcome obstacles and sometimes seeing photos of really beautiful things.

Challenge #12

Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life.

1. My DW friends enhance my life. I like reading about your lives, what you're doing, the changes you face and how you deal with things, and I like the things you share, links, photos, etc. I don't know that most of you enhance my fandom life because most of us don't share a fandom. But you are nice people and interesting people and we find connection. This is my only social media-type account. I've never had a facebook or twitter or tumblr or anything else so this is it and it is enough for me.

2. This year and next year, I am planning to actually engage in fannish activities in RL with people with whom I share a fandom so that will be different. I hope those plans come to fruition and we have fun.

3. There are so many content creators, the gif makers and the vidders and the ficcers and the fan artists and the fan crafters, who enhance my life with their art (in the general sense of the word) on YT and tumblr and etsy and AO3 and DW and, once upon a time, LiveJournal. And the mods of comms and exchanges.

THANK YOU! The world is better with you (and your art) in it.

Hi! Someone please tell me where I can buy some extra hours for my days ...

I'm a bit behind on a few things, and nothing is going very quickly, but I'm catching up! This week will be busy both at work and otherwise, but my schedule should be regular again overall, and check-in posts should go up at the usual time.

(I also haven't done this week's Guardian rewatch yet, but soon, I hope!)

Yesterday's and today's writing

Some much too slow writing yesterday; an alibi paragraph for today. Faster and more substantial writing tomorrow, I hope, because the next deadline is close ...

1. I believe the kids say FML at this moment. Yesterday we got about 7 inches of snow (which is a lot for our area). Yesterday the boys' father and the boys dug the cars out. This morning, the boys' father helped me clear even more. Okay. I left 45 minutes early and it was okay until jazz man's neighborhood. It hadn't been plowed! But STUPID OKAPI decided to drive forward and get stuck.

I panicked and ran to his house. Jazz man's daughter and son-in-law and I worked for AN HOUR trying to back my car out of that neighborhood. We went got to the main road, a plow driver stopped and he actually got in my car and maneuvered it onto the main road. The boys' father came, too, but by that time, we were close to the main road So, I didn't do my shift.

I called the office, no help. I called AAA, no help. I really thought I was stuck there.

When I saw it hadn't been plowed I should have turned and left the car on the main road or called the office or done anything but what I did, which was charge ahead. I have no experience driving in snow, and don't really know what to do when the tires are spinning.

I was driving to my Indian lady when the office called and they had cancelled that appointment when I first called them because I was stuck. So, that shift didn't happen either. So I turned the car around and went home.

NO MONIES!

I feel like such a loser. Nobody (jazz man or family) called the office to say the neighborhood hadn't been plowed. And I was in the new car, which I thought would be better. It probably was, but still. Regardless, I should have been smarter. I haven't felt this bad about myself in a while and I am seriously regretting throwing away my cutting stuff (but I'm not going out to get new stuff because, well, snow).

2. NO MONIES! I got another air force guy shift cancelled on Friday because he went in the hospital this weekend.

3. And I need monies because I got BTS tickets for me and [personal profile] bethctg for when BTS comes to Baltimore in August. That was such a harrowing ordeal. Plan A on the laptop failed so I tried Hail Mary backup Plan B on my phone and boom, boom, boom, had tickets in a few minutes (I don't understand ticket nonsense). It might have been irresponsible given my Okapi Invasion holiday plans for the UK but BTS is coming right here, no hotel, no transport, it seemed crazy not to try. I hear the queue in Munich was 1 million+ ARMY. And this was just pre-sale for people with ARMY membership.

3. So today's fiasco, snowstorm, no monies, getting BTS tickets, maintenance still hasn't fixed our lights so we eat dinner and the boys shower in the dark, I am trying to catch up with snowflake, I don't know, aaarrrghhh!
