Our Environmental Approach

At Fineboxmaker, sustainability is part of every decision we make—from how we source wood to how we craft, package, and deliver each box. We aim to produce timeless objects with minimal waste, using materials and methods that respect the natural world.

Responsible Wood Sourcing

We work with suppliers who provide wood from responsibly managed forests, with FSC® or PEFC certification where possible. This helps ensure sustainable forestry practices, biodiversity protection, and fair treatment of forest communities.

We use a combination of solid hardwood and real hardwood veneers, depending on the design and practical needs of each box. Veneers allow us to work efficiently with rare or decorative timbers, reduce waste, and improve the structural integrity of components where solid wood would be unsuitable. All visible surfaces are real wood—never plastic, never synthetic veneer.

CITES Compliance and Protected Species

We do not work with wood species that are banned or restricted under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).

CITES is an international agreement between governments, designed to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. It lists species that are endangered or at risk, and places restrictions or outright bans on their use in commercial products.

It is illegal to trade in wood from species that appear on the most protected CITES lists (Appendix I), and we actively avoid restricted species from Appendix II unless they are certified, traceable, and legally permitted. Our wood is sourced with full documentation, and we keep up-to-date with all changes to CITES listings to remain in full compliance.

Low-Waste Making

Very little is wasted in our workshop. Offcuts are often repurposed into smaller items, test pieces, or saved for one-of-a-kind designs. Where reuse isn’t possible, we recycle or compost waste material responsibly. Our finishing products are chosen for their safety and environmental profile.

Long-Lasting Craft

We make each box by hand in the UK using traditional joinery and finishing techniques. The result is a product made to last—not something disposable or trend-driven. Our boxes are built to age gracefully, to be repairable, and to serve their purpose long into the future.

Local Production, Lower Impact

Because all of our work is done in-house at our UK workshop, we avoid the emissions, shipping impacts, and oversupply associated with mass manufacturing abroad. Small-batch production allows us to maintain quality while minimising waste and avoiding overproduction.

Packaging with Purpose

Our packaging is designed to be recyclable or reusable, while still protecting the item inside. We avoid unnecessary plastics or filler materials and aim for presentation that’s considered, not excessive.

Finally, supporting one of the tree planting programs in your country is a great way to help the environment.
