With sign-ups underway, it's time to start talking about our canons! Check out our delicious tagset for this year's nominations!

If you nominated a rare/small canon you're interested in requesting and/or offering, please feel free to create a fandom promo post in the comments below to see if the canon's themes or story is something that may interest others.

Please include the canon and its medium in the subject line, i.e. "Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovich (Books)", "The Thin Man (Movie)", etc., for ease of organisation.

Please try to avoid linking images. Feel free to chat about the canons if something catches your eye and you'd like to know more! (Please try to stay anonymous regarding what you may be trying to match to in our sign-ups.)

Here are some things you can cover in your post, but you're more than welcome to pick and choose and add additional information:

Title: Please put the canon title in the post as well.

Media: Is it a book, game, comic, movie, television series, recursive work, etc.?

Approximate length: Reading Length is a great resource for books and How Long to Beat is a great resource for video games.

Where is it found?: Please only provide links to legal sources. Is it free or must it be purchased?

Elevator pitch of what it's about: If you have to describe it in the time it takes to travel in an elevator, how would you?

Content warnings: You won't be able to warn for everything that may trigger someone, so please consider what the main trigger warnings would be and know that you won't be able to warn for everything.

What do you love about it?:

What kind of themes would you request for it?: Are you looking for a murder mystery? Heist? Medical drama investigation? Spies? This question does not mean you will request it; it's meant to help others know how it fits in the theme and what kind of creative works it may inspire.

OTW Signal, January 2026

Posted by Caitlynne

Every month in OTW Signal, we take a look at stories that connect to the OTW’s mission and projects, including issues related to legal matters, technology, academia, fannish history and preservation issues of fandom, fan culture, and transformative works.

In the News

As part of Copyright Week 2026, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) highlighted a broken aspect of U.S. copyright law: statutory damages. These are fines imposed on platforms and users for copyright infringement, and because there is little guidance on how to calculate them, they can far exceed the amount of actual financial harm—up to $150,000 per work. For the many internet users whose online presence relies on re-use, this creates steep risk and encourages online censorship.

Massive, unpredictable damages awards for copyright infringement, such as a $222,000 penalty for sharing 24 music tracks online, are the fuel that drives overzealous or downright abusive takedowns of creative material from online platforms. Capricious and error-prone copyright enforcement bots, like YouTube’s Content ID, were created in part to avoid the threat of massive statutory damages against the platform. Those same damages create an ever-present bias in favor of major rightsholders and against innocent users in the platforms’ enforcement decisions. And they stop platforms from addressing the serious problems of careless and downright abusive copyright takedowns. […]

“But wait”, you might say, “don’t legal protections like fair use and the safe harbors of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act protect users and platforms?” They do—but the threat of statutory damages makes that protection brittle. Fair use allows for many important re-uses of copyrighted works without permission. But fair use … can sometimes be difficult to predict when copyright is applied to new uses. Even well-intentioned and well-resourced users avoid experimenting at the boundaries of fair use when the cost of a court disagreeing is so high and unpredictable.

The EFF proposes a fairer system: limit statutory damages to a multiple of harm or eliminate them altogether in cases of good-faith fair use.

The EFF has a long history of tackling problems in U.S. copyright law. In 2008, with support from the OTW, the EFF petitioned the U.S. Copyright Office for an exemption to the DMCA’s anticircumvention provisions in order to allow noncommercial remix artists, such as vidders, to break DVD encryption for the purpose of obtaining short, high quality clips for inclusion in noncommercial remix videos. The EFF and the OTW, along with New Media Rights, continue to file renewal petitions to keep this exemption active.

The OTW received a request from an Advanced Placement high school student who is conducting a study about the effects of fanfiction and fandom on interpersonal development. To take part in this study, fans can answer a survey about the fandoms they are involved in, the fanfiction they read, and their experiences interacting with other fans. For more information, please visit the survey link above.

This study is being conducted as part of the Advanced Placement Capstone Diploma Program and is being supervised by Stephen Westbrook. Questions about this study can be directed to Stephen Westbrook.

AO3 and the OTW are not endorsing this project, but we are signal-boosting this link for informational purposes.

International Fanworks Day (IFD) is just around the corner on February 15th! This year’s theme is Alternate Universes (AU), and we’d love to hear from you—what are your favorite AUs, your go-to AU categories, or treasured headcanons? Tag your posts with #IFD2026, and we may signal-boost them on our OTW social media accounts!

P.S. Today (January 28th) is the last day to let us know about any events you’ll be running in your community for this IFD! You can submit your events through this form.

We want your suggestions for the next OTW Signal post! If you know of an essay, video, article, podcast, or news story you think we should know about, send us a link. We are looking for content in all languages! Submitting a link doesn’t guarantee that it will be included in an OTW post, and inclusion of a link doesn’t mean that it is endorsed by the OTW.

What I read

Finished The Edge. Well, there was a fair amount of research on Canadian railways went into that....

Shani Akilah, For Such a Time as This (2024), sortes ereader, i.e. opened up as I was scrolling my unread list - not sure how I came across this but enjoyed it, linked short stories about a group of Black British young (ish) people of diverse origins.

Forgot to mention this which I had already started last week and put to one side: Dennis Covington, Salvation on Sand Mountain: Snake Handling and Redemption in Southern Appalachia (1995, reissue with new afterword 2009) - I think I saw something about this somewhere and was interested in the idea. I was a bit irked at first by the style which was a certain kind of upmarket journalistic, and I was then a bit hmmm about him getting in touch with his own occluded lost in the mists family roots, but it was intriguing stuff, especially the way he got both drawn into the whole thing and then ejected by the community.

Christopher Isherwood, A Single Man (1964), since we watched the movie at the weekend (Colin Firth gives with brood) and I couldn't remember the book well enough to say how it matched (it did some odd things). Not, I think, peak Isherwood.

Madeleine E. Robins, The Sleeping Partner (Sarah Tolerance #3) (2011, recently reissued) - I read the earlier ones ages ago but missed this, which I was really gripped by.

On the go

And straight on to Madeleine E. Robins, The Doxies Penalty (Sarah Tolerance #4) (2025)

Up next

No idea - though a book I requested for review has now turned up. (Also essay review I turned in months ago finally came back with some minimal edits to do.)

Because I never brought it over here! Here's the Yuletide fic I wrote!!!

Can you believe it took me 39 years of life to write The Blue Castle fic? I'm very proud of this--it's a love letter to the book and the characters, and I'm so glad that Yuletide gave me the nudge to write it. Yuletide!!!!

of wild honey (7940 words) by Lirazel
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Blue Castle - L. M. Montgomery
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Barney Snaith/Valancy Stirling
Characters: Barney Snaith, Valancy Stirling, Cecilia "Cissy" Gay, Abel Gay
Additional Tags: Yuletide, Yuletide 2025, 5 Things
Summary:

Abel held up his hands, helpless. “She’s sitting in my house holding Cissy’s hand this very minute! She gave me her valise before I left the house, and I thought sure she’d send an errand boy to fetch it back tomorrow. But no, not an hour ago she walked right up to my door, determined as you please, and I do believe she intends to stay despite how the whole damned ruck of Stirlings must be throwing a tantrum as we speak. The spunk of the girl! The ways of Providence are strange.”

Life was full of surprises, but in Barney’s experience, people generally weren’t. Oh, people had surprised him before, in his callow youth, but that was because he hadn’t understood who they really were. Once you got down to someone’s true character, you could see that they’d been who they were all along. People mostly kept doing just what they’d been doing their whole lives, what they’d been brought up to do. Of course he’d met a handful of those who bucked tradition and struck out on their own, but he hadn’t expected to find one in Deerwood.

“Is it Providence?” he asked. “That seems as clear a demonstration of free will as anything I’ve ever heard.”

Five times Valancy Stirling surprises Barney Snaith.

All y'all are contacting your elected reps, right?

Yeah, do that.

Show up when you can and how you can. We can't all do everything, but we call can do something.

So, after doing all that, I try to, like, live my life.

That part is harder. I made a comment to Peter recently about surviving times when you think you might not survive. I grew up near DC in the 80s as the daughter of a pretty hard-core cold warrior.

Well, I thought I didn't have a future, so I mostly didn't do or build much and figured every day was one day closer to dying in a firestorm, so who cares?

I am still staring dying by violence in the face, ya know. My household is well-known not to support the current administration.

I learned something from my youth and the sheer, abject system-error that it took a decade and a half to recover from when it looked like I would have an adulthood after all.

You gotta pretend you're going to survive. Even if you don't believe it. You gotta pretend you have a future.

That means yes, working towards actually having one. But also taking good care of your body and your mind. Move gently in ways that feel good to your body. Eat tasty food consiously and focus on how it makes your tummy feel good. Take care of your environment for a little bit, no dramatic effort allowed.

Then, for your own sake, do something you LIKE to do. Read a book, watch a movie, zone out to a video game.

Courage isn't just white-knuckling through bad times. It's also being kind to yourself and doing your best to avoid despair.

Yesterday after work i just escaped into a book. I finished Rachel Neumeier's Death's Lady trilogy. The first book felt complete and stand alone, and i found the in this world with a mental institution housing a distressed person from another world to be different and engaging. Would real therapists and psychiatrists approve? I dunno, but i enjoyed it. The next two books are one story that i was impatient with -- just as likely a me problem as that of the text, as in retrospect i regard it with some pleasure. The fourth book, last night, was of redemption. The lovely aspect of these books is the alternate world has recovered from a long traumatic time of cruelty and the young leader has an instinct for healing.

And i escaped there again.

I am privileged in that generally we can sit out the ice and snow and enjoy looking and walking in it. The stretch of road we are on retains the ice long after it clears elsewhere, our north slope grounds are shaded by tall pines and we keep the snow for a long while. I suspect that once we get round the curve i will, as usual, be surprised at how different everywhere else is.

"KEY MESSAGE 1...Confidence continues to grow in at least measurable snowfall in central NC Fri night into Sun morning, but considerable uncertainty remains with an incredibly wide range of potential snowfall amounts and related impacts.... This pattern is favorable for at least light snow with a high snow/liquid ratio within central NC, but also brings an incredibly  difficult forecast challenge.... The likelihood ... remains a point of considerable uncertainty and may not be ironed out until 1-2 days before the event begins. However, the top analogs and latest suite of ... model guidance highlights at least the potential for significant snowfall totals somewhere from the Carolinas into the Mid-Atlantic. There are a few failure modes for this setup which would result in less precipitation over central NC. "

I like reading the local NWS (RAH) area forecast. The above is essentially how i skim the text. Whole paragraphs of technical air masses and troughs and poetic phrases like  the "stronger synoptic ascent overspreads" i consume to produce some abstract impressionist concept of weather maps in my head, but i am on the look out for the process. These forecasters speaking to other forecasters focus on certainty and uncertainty and the basis for claims. The meaningful weather maps right now focus on what the probability is that warning or watches need to be issued -- not how much.  The graphical ten day forecast i look at has no way to condense in all this uncertainty, except for the numbers to jump around as new models are run.

The Weather Channel is apparently naming it Winter Storm Gianna.

Meanwhile, the project planning for which i am scheduled to fly to Ohio this weekend -- exhale, it will be what it will be -- gripped my heart yesterday with dread. I am feeling inadequate as i look into some cryptographic technologies and consider the chuzpah with which we undertake this planning. I think i had forgotten the depths of some of the issues facing us in this work, and yesterday it all came back to me. I am ... thankful ... for the pause that means i have this complexity in mind as we head into the planning.

Meanwhile, i read one of my Republican senator's statements critical of ICE and fume at the wishy washy way he weasels his critique to "protect President Trump's legacy." The press has carried stories about the fear these politicians have of getting in the crosshairs of the MAGA and Q faithful who have shown themselves willing to assault and attack. The attack on Paul Pelosi, on judges, on governors, even the attempted assassination attempts -- yes, i can understand the fear. But there are people on the street in Minneapolis who are brave and are also facing violence and attack and no doubt MAGA and Q faithful are doxxing people who have made themselves visible -- can this senator not be brave enough to do more?

The number of deaths in ICE's custody has shot up this year and part of it is the ignorance in which they bring people into custody, the lack of support for the people who have chronic conditions, the utter lack of care. Funding of DHS should also be contingent on hiring the medical staff and translators and custodial staff, and buying supplies to support the people in custody. If ANYONE is in custody, the state should be meeting their physical and legal needs.

ICE needs to be held accountable for those deaths, too. Not just the terror they are causing on the streets, but the tedious quiet horror of neglect in custody.

Argh, there is so much wrong with the whole horrible, racist process.

Just finished: Choices: An Anthology of Reproductive Horror, edited by Dianna Gunn. There are enough good stories in here that I'd recommend it, but the general problems—earnestness, literalness—persist throughout many of the stories. Ah, author-led anthologies.

Neosynthesis, edited by Bryan Chaffin. Speaking of! This almost had the opposite problem, which is a bunch of stories where I actually didn't know what was going on at all and couldn't orient myself. But it's rescued by quite a few standouts—Rohan O'Duill's Cold-verse short stories, especially "The Lore of Seven," "Nova Domus," which is about a spaceship becoming a person, and "The Nexpat," which is about life extension and virtual existence.

I also flipped through the winter edition of "The Colored Lens," though I ended up just skipping ahead to J.S. Carroll's "Romeo Popinjay vs Iron Hans in the Beauty and the Beast Match You Won't Want To Miss," which was what I bought the anthology for, and which is 1000% worth the cover price. I want an entire novel of this short story. It's about an alternate universe where other hominids survive into more or less the present era, and feature in sideshows and pro-wrestling. Two heels—one human, one a wildman—end up forming a strange and touching friendship and rebel against their promoter. It's so so good.

Currently reading: I think next up is going to either be the rest of the aforementioned anthology or Changelog by Rich Larson, since that's what's sitting on the top of my TBR pile.

I use the same name everywhere so I am [personal profile] beatrice_otter on AO3. Treats are awesome.

I would rather get a story you were happy with than "well, she said she liked x, so I guess I have to do x even though I don't like x and/or am not inspired that way." This letter is long with lots of suggestions and preferences if you find it helpful, but feel free to ignore it if it is not helpful. I'm fairly easy to please; I've been doing ficathons for a long time and am usually very happy with my gifts.

The most important thing for me in a fic is that the characters are well-written and recognizably themselves. Even when I don't like a character, I don't go in for character-bashing. If nothing else, if the rest of this letter is too much or my kinks don't fit yours, just concentrate on writing a story with everyone in character and good spelling and grammar and I will almost certainly love what you come up with.

I have an embarrassment squick, which makes humor kind of hit-or-miss sometimes. The kind of humor where someone does something embarrassing and the audience is laughing at them makes me uncomfortable. On the other hand, the kind of humor where the audience is laughing with the characters I really enjoy.

I honestly never did finish the last season of 9-1-1 Lone Star because I didn't like it as much after the cast change, and the new stories weren't grabbing me. Then I changed streaming services, and couldn't be bothered to find it another way.

But I was looking at what was on Crave, since I have that right now, and saw that there was a new show called 9-1-1 Nashville, and thought I'd give it a whirl.

Boy, whatever new direction notes they got, were not my thing. It's all about some rich guy and his sons fighting with each other, and a scheming baby mamma, and we basically don't meet any of the other characters in the pilot. How on earth did they talk Chris O'Donnell into this nonsense? He can't be that hard up!

Plus the rescues were just very silly. And this is by standards of the 9-1-1 franchise, which is already extremely silly. This girl gets carried into the air by a kite! Not like a special kite, just a... regular one. A tornado is bearing down on a country music festival and they save it with the power of heart!

I vaguely considered watching the second half of the pilot before deciding there's got to be other trash shows I'd enjoy more. When is the new Stargate show happening?

I think if you're interested in foe-yay half brothers who want to fuck, you might be in business?

Now that the whole crossposting thing is working, I plan to continue reducing my presence on Facebook. I often post things there to remember them, but I can’t find them later when I want them. So it makes much more sense, of course, to post them here. There’s also the fact that Meta can’t make money off me if I’m not over there.

So – we went to Mom’s place today to visit and fix things. Rick wasn’t able to get her living room television to power on. It has always had an annoying tendency to intermittently refuse to power on. At least TVs are cheaper now than when this huge thing was purchased. If she replaces it quickly, she might get ahead of the tariffs.

I worked on her computer while Rick was occupied with that. She has a tendency to get overwhelmed with 2FA prompts and the like, so I try to keep the accounts she uses happy. I am still working through the list of Daddy’s accounts, trying to get them all switched over to use her phone instead of his, or just getting them closed.

I enjoyed visiting with her. Losing Daddy so suddenly reinforced thoughts I had been having for a while. I’m very fortunate to still have one parent, and I won’t take her presence for granted.

I want to try making this Melt the ICE hat, which of course knits in the round. I haven't done that, so I looked up a couple tutorials on how to knit with double pointed needles. They both said, "these will come in sets of five." The pattern says, "divide evenly on 4 DPNs" (which I assume implies the existence of a fifth needle to work with).

Every single one of the many sets of DPNs I got from Mom comes in a set of four.

Today was super annoying because I had a very weird internet outage. Spectrum acknowledged that there was an outage in my area even! But it was only partial? Or intermittent? Just fucking weird. I could get to my work-related sites fairly frequently (outlook, sharepoint), but literally nothing else would load except for some reason gmail. Like, no news sites. No bank. No shopping sites. Bitwarden timed out trying to log into my password vault. I couldn't get anything at all to load on my personal laptop until I plugged in my phone to use it as a hotspot, which was greyed out and not allowed on my work laptop. Finally, around 4 pm when Spectrum said the outage was over but I still didn't have full service, I chatted with them and somehow their reboot of everything worked (even though I rebooted the modem and router several times on my own without any luck), so I was able to get full access to the internet on both laptops and on my TV. *hands*

In other news, I found that a stint overnight in the fridge greatly improved those cupcakes. I wasn't impressed by them at room temp (texture was super spongy), but they're really good with the extra time in the cold! So if you need vegan cupcakes, the KAB recipe is recommended, especially if you make them ahead of time.

Meanwhile, it looks like we might get a nor'easter this coming weekend? A big storm potentially, though with less snow and more wind. No warming of temperatures anyway. Oy.

If Western Animation Style Had Not Wanked For Thee Thou Hadst Had No Hot Sauce?

In the Crab Nebula, Bojack Horseman and spicy food are core tenets of Puritanism.

God I love the idea of a stern man in a black hat with a buckle frowning mightily and muttering to the lord as he animates a horse man having unsatisfying sex with a pink cat lady.

Remembering Tiger Lily Roar

Completed: February 2025

Remembering Tiger Lily Roar is a memorial account for fanfiction written by Tiger Lily Roar, who was active in many fandoms, especially Young Justice. This memorial account was set up with the assistance of Open Doors with permission from Tiger Lily Roar’s family and is maintained by Eva.

Find works at the Remembering Tiger Lily Roar AO3 account.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the Remembering Tiger Lily Roar import announcement post. To learn the history of the archive or to share some stories of your own, check out the Tiger Lily Roar Fanlore page.

due South Seekrit Santa

Completed: March 2025

due South Seekrit Santa (dSSS) is an annual gift exchange challenge for fans of due South. The dSSS archive was originally on http://dsss.crocolanthus.com/. After many attempts to communicate with the server admin/owner went unanswered, the crocolanthus dSSS archive went offline, and the domain name was lost. To preserve the archive, the works from the 2004-2009 exchanges were imported to AO3 by Open Doors and dSSS.

Find works at the due South Seekrit Santa AO3 collection.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the due South Seekrit Santa import announcement post. To learn the history of the archive or to share some stories of your own, check out the due South Seekrit Santa Fanlore page.

Snow Lands

Completed: April 2025

Snow Lands was a fanfiction and fan comic archive for The Lion King (1994 animated movie) online until June 2023 and was run by Athari. The website hosted works in English and Russian and preserved some of the fandom’s masterpieces.

My Mongoose Ezines

Completed: August 2025

Stayka’s Saint Seiya Archive

Completed: October 2025

Stayka’s Saint Seiya Archive was a Saint Seiya fansite that started in 1998. It was an important early contributor to the Saint Seiya fandom, as one of the first sites on the internet to use English, unifying the uniquely global and diverse fan following. The site went offline in 2019, after which Tracy began contacting individual creators and collecting permission to ensure permanent preservation.

Find works at the Stayka’s Saint Seiya Archive collection.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the Stayka’s Saint Seiya Archive import announcement post. To learn the history of the archive or to share some stories of your own, check out the Stayka’s Saint Seiya Archive Fanlore page.

Oz Magi

Completed: November 2025

Oz Magi is an annual gift exchange for the HBO Oz fandom that has been active since 2004 on LiveJournal and Dreamwidth. The moderator created an AO3 collection for Oz Magi in 2012, but wanted to also archive the earlier fanworks. This will be an ongoing import, with each year’s fanworks being transferred across to AO3 on behalf of the creators.

The related imports of HBO Oz archives Unit B and Twisted Sisterhood are still in progress.

Find works at the Oz Magi AO3 collection.

Absolution – The Inugrrrl Memorial

Completed: December 2025

Inugrrrl was a longtime fan and fanfiction writer of InuYasha and the InuYasha/Kagome pairing. In her own words, she was known for “writing characterization-breaking, smut-filled, angst-riddled, alternate universe pulp fiction without a hint of shame, regret, or apology.” She was active in the fanbase from 2005-2024. Inugrrrl tragically passed away in June of 2024 and her daughter wished for her mother’s fanworks to remain online for the fanbase to enjoy.

Find works written by Inugrrrl at the Absolution – The Inugrrrl Memorial AO3 account, and works gifted to Inugrrrl at the Inugrrrl’s Gifted Fics collection.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the Absolution – The Inugrrrl Memorial import announcement post. To learn the history of Inugrrrl or to share some stories of your own, check out the Inugrrrl Fanlore page.

And one more…

In June 2025, Open Doors imported the following subcollections from FictionAlley: AstronomyTower, HPInkPot, Riddikulus, Schnoogle, and TheDarkArts.

Find works at the FictionAlley AO3 collection.

ArtisticAlley is yet to be imported, which means the import of FictionAlley is still ongoing.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the FictionAlley import announcement post. To learn the history of the archive or to share some stories of your own, check out the FictionAlley Fanlore page.

We want to give a huge THANK YOU to all of the archivists and volunteers who made these imports possible, as well as all the creators who have transferred or claimed their works! We look forward to importing more archives in 2026.

So I’m so far behind for Snowflake so I’m gonna try and catch up on a few now (who knows how many I’ll do)

For snowflake people, hi welcome in! I only did the first 2 challenges cause I fell on the ice (hurting both my hands), then I got distracted by a Lego project (the Stranger Things Creel House), the. I got hit by low energy/bad brain which sucked.

But anyway!

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

As a Bernal site, I find myself lost on tv tropes often. I usually go on there after watching something and then end up getting sidetracked by stuff.

This is the latest fic im fixated on and hoping gets another part soon. It’s a Strnager Things fic set post season 5 about Dustin and Steve adventuring, breaking into old research sites and… Something goes wrong. I think you can guess what from the tags.

If you’re a fan of Japanese horror and found footage stuff there is Fake Documentary q. I’m not even half way through them yet, but I really love the vibes they’ve got going on. It makes me think of Noroi: The Curse. (Hopefully I’ll watch more tonight)

[Redacted] is my current podcast I’m listening to. It’s about a group of people who are investigating a variety of supernatural things or a secretive agency. Think The X-Files or Torchwood. I’m really loving it so far.

I end with this article which isn’t fandom related at all but is interesting. It came up in my uni studies and it’s a fossil that’s been found of a snake, which includes the remains of lizard in its stomach, which also includes a beetle in its one.

Challenge #5

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your wishlist if you feel comfortable doing so.

So this led me to finally doing an updated fic wants post I don’t expect people to do anything for it though, it’s just given me the incentive to do it. (Though if anyone wants to or has recs based on them feel free!)

However! There’s other things I feel that snowflake people can help with, that I’d be eternally grateful for.

First, I’m looking for the new Strnager Things stickers. I’ve not been able to find them anywhere, only managing to find the sticker album once. I just need places that have them to check (I know the panini site has added the big boxes last week, but I know there’s packs and sets that come with cards and I wanna at least know what they are).

Second, two specific things. I’m looking for two films which I can’t seem to find. The first is National Anthem which is a film I wanna see cause it has Charlie Plummer in it, yet I can’t find it anywhere. So if anyone knows where it is to watch in the uk let me know. (I’m trying to watch some of The Long Walk actors filmography and it’s hard to find his stuff in general, so if anyone has his other stuff too)

Same thing again for As You Are, which has Charlie Heaton kissing a guy (which is why I wanna see). The trouble is it’s title makes it hard to search for which is so annoying.

Lastly general horror recs of the following:
*Underwater horror films (ideally not shark centric)
*Plant based horror films (I recently watched the Doctor Who ep The Seeds Of Doom and now have an urge)
*Anything with haunted technology, especially if it’s retro tech (think stuff like The Ring/Ring)
*Any space based sci-fi horror

I’ll take films, shows or games for any of those.

Those are the main things that have come to mind (at least since I saw the post with the challenge!)

I’m gonna have a think on what I can do for 6 (the top 10 challenge) so if anyone is curious about top 10 things they’d wanna know from me feel free to let me know. Challenge 9 is kinda covered in the fic wants post but I might have a ponder and expand on it.

So I’m gonna end with this one.

Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

Creativity vibes lately have been so off.

But usually I’ll get an idea, sometimes it came from a vague thought, something I’ve watched or a prompt. I have a discord where I note vague ideas down, just in case they lead to anything else (along with links to stuff).

Then I open a document, do the usual thing I do when I post here (pairing, rating, warnings, notes) and then I note down The vague idea so I can rememebr if I have to come back to it, then I save it usually as a random thing but so I can remember (usually pairing and whatever concept/kink it’s about. Then I try and work on it, sometimes I get a good burst in and do a lot paragraphs in, sometimes just a few, sometimes just a few lines. (Especially when my brain gets ideas when I’m tired which is annoying). And then it’s a dice roll if it actually gets worked on or added to the pile of WIPs (usually depending on outside sources like mental health or other irl stuff or just getting sidetracked).

Now I’m gonna bundle up, watch Good Ship Murder, then the Pokémon stream and maybe fic or go on Dead By Daylight (yipeee new Stranger Things stuff in it!) but I might get sidetracked.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge would like us to recommend to others a way in to finding a place in a fandom that we're already part of.

Challenge #14

Create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom.

The two of those things are quite different, I might note. The promo is about trying to get people into a fandom based on the strength of the canonical materials (whether the smart writing, the intricate plot, or the hotness of the actors), and the rec list is about getting people into a fandom (or at least the transformative fandom part) based on the fanworks that are available to someone. Neither of these methods are inherently wrong, but depending on your approach, someone might get into the fandom with radically different ideas of what the source material or the fandom is about. (This is not necessarily a bad thing, but approaching something from the fannish side might make you suspect there's more nuance and depth to the source material than there actually is.)

Anyway, since I am both not very good at collecting new fandoms and not very good at getting and remembering works in the fandoms I have, this would normally leave me in a pickle about what to do, except I have plenty of older fandoms and recommendations for you that will make up for my utter lack of newish fandoms for you to experience.

If you're in Maine or Philly or wherever the fuck Vance claimed DHS is going next, I BEG you to look at the rapid response and mutual aid networks and how they've been built in Portland, Chicago, and the Twin Cities, and start building your own version NOW.

Download signal if you haven't already. Pick a resistance pseudonym. Make a proton email that has no indicators to your real name. Start buying and printing whistles and whistle zines.

Organize your school patrols and foot patrols NOW. Talk to your community and your mercados and your Hmong and Somali grocery stores, ask them what support they need. Get "ICE are not welcome here" signage for businesses and homes. Familiarize yourself with the difference between an administrative warrant and a judicial warrant.

Learn how to take down a SALUTE report. PRACTICE salute reports. Learn, memorize, and embody radio etiquette for rapid response work.

Pick your lane: rapid response or mutual aid-- you can't do both, because rapid response often puts you in direct contact with ICE. They've been taking down plate numbers and leading responders back to their own homes here in the Twin Cities.

Remember that being under siege is a marathon, not a race. Explicit talk of dehumanizing ICE tactics )

Tumblr user kawaiiabetic:

Hey, Angeleno here to add: look for or start mutual aid groups that buy out your vendors, jardineros, tradespeople, helping support the most vulnerable members of your community from making the choice to stay home and safe or provide for family. We’re still doing this here and it helps.

“ICE NOT WELCOME” signs are great for solidarity and breaking morale, but please make and help pass out signs stating a home or business is private property. Make sure your business has an area explicitly for employees only. What we’ve seen in the last week makes all this seem like sticking a post-it on a viper and none of us know where we’re headed now, but it’s easy to do and could make a difference. It’s made a difference here.

[personal profile] oursin

Thinking about the 'how can you do/think about normal innocuous quotidien things' while shocking horrors are going on -

(Am not actually going to invoke pet genre of 'look at all these novels being written at a time when World War 2 was just about to begin/beginning'.)

This was just a coincidental thing that occurred to me when I was talking about something tangentially related when being a Nexpert for a journalist yesterday.

Who wanted to know about a certain sex manual v popular in its day and its author -

In the course of which I mentioned that it was not prosecuted for obscenity** unlike Eustace Chesser's Love without Fear (1940). One would have thought that possibly people had other things on their mind in 1940 than maximising matrimonial happiness, particularly considering that families were being broken up by men being conscripted into service, women being evacuated with their children, etc etc, but anyway, it was published, and sold several thousand copies before, in 1942, it was prosecuted for obscenity by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Again, one would think people had other things on their mind. Anyway, Chesser and his publisher decided to take the case to court and plead not guilty before a jury, bringing three medical witnesses for the defence. The jury was out for less than an hour before returning a 'not guilty' verdict.

Yesterday saw snowdrops appearing in the local park.
