"Mask Off" is a song by Future, released as the second single and seventh track for his eponymous fifth studio album, Future (2017). It peaked at number five on the US Billboard Hot 100, being his highest-charting single until the releases of "Life Is Good" (2020), "Way 2 Sexy" (2021), "Wait for U" (2022), and "Like That" (2024) with the former peaking at number two, and the latter three peaking at number one. It has since been certified nine times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for combined sales and streaming equivalent units of over nine million units in the United States.
The song samples the 1978 song "Prison Song" by Carlton Williams. In this track, Future opens up about drug use and addiction problems (Percocets, Molly Percocets). It also tells a story that explores the surface of Future's past, from trapping to living a life of luxury. A remix featuring Kendrick Lamar was released on June 16, 2017. In 2020, Future and the FreeWishes Foundation announced the "Mask On" campaign. Together, they provided more than 100,000 masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Music video[]
The music video, directed by Colin Tilley, was released on May 5, 2017. It was filmed in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, and features appearances from Amber Rose and DJ Esco. Tilley wrote the treatment for it in one day, and shooting began the following week for two nights in a row. He explained of its concept, "I wanted to create this really gritty, raw world, but capture it in a really surreal, hyper-realism way. I was really taking this shi–y situation that we have with our president and everything going on right now in the world, and taking it two, three years from now, but having Future basically be the puppet master that is controlling everything as he's moving through this world kind of untouched in this chromed-out car where everything basically bounces off it. I wanted to capture everything off of that car, too. I really wanted to pretty much feel the world from that car's perspective."[1]
