«Stoolap - High-performance embedded SQL database in Rust»

Have any of you tried it before and what is your experience with it? Can it be used in the same way as SQLite? I ask because the open source project is relatively new, i.e. are there certain arguments to (not) use it productively?

Been on LXQT on my computers (main, secondary and ancient) for about a month now and I'm pretty happy. I'm not missing much and it wasn't (apart from setting it up in the first place) not much of an effort to adapt.

I just updated the Ghostbsd boxes to 25.02-R14.3p8

Thanks to the Qogir theme for applications and icons and the marvelous wallpapers by Image@orbiteOrbite / OrbiteLambda lambda I felt right at home and thanks to the LXQT people, both the FreeBSD and GhostBSD team, the FreeBSD port maintainer for giving us the ability to chose.

With news that Discord is moving toward stricter age/ID verification and privacy concerns around this shift, I’m wondering whether Open Source communities like Python and Django should consider alternatives to Discord. 🤔

Platforms like Matrix or Zulip might better respect privacy and freedom of access.

What do you think about a migration away from Discord?

Now would be a great time for smaller hosting providers like Hetzner to offer managed services with Zulip, RocketChat, and IRC servers...

Wouldn't it be spiffy if we saw an explosion of open-source managed services to replace proprietary ones Discord, Slack, Instagram, etc.?

System administration isn't for everyone. It's a non-starter to expect everybody to manage their own open-source services. *Especially* when people are trying to disentangle themselves from multiple proprietary things at once.

Run your own blog and web site? Sure. File backup? OK. Chat server... and photo hosting ... music and video streaming... and everything else? That starts to add up and become overwhelming for most people pretty quickly.

There's an opportunity for lots of small businesses, jobs, improving open source, and setting people free of proprietary services all at once here. If we all take it. Self-hosting doesn't *have* to mean literally running services yourself, if there are reasonable alternatives. (e.g., Fastmail, Hetzner Storage Share.)

We’re pleased to highlight an article from the latest edition of the FreeBSD Journal. In “printf(“Hello, srcmgr\n”);”, Mark Johnston introduces the Source Management (srcmgr) team and the role it plays in supporting FreeBSD source development.

"When the market is this many layers of fucked, we’re lucky that we have alternatives. By using, supporting and contributing to nice products built by nice people, we can go some way to making open source a viable and sustainable model in whatever future in which we find ourselves."

The community at r/degoogle is discussing a move from Reddit to Lemmy. The main drivers? Reddit's centralized control and its ongoing friction with third-party developers.

Lemmy offers a federated alternative where the community, not a corporation, owns the platform. It's a great example of how open-source software provides a real exit strategy from Big Tech.

We are now officially on mastodon.

Syng is an easy to use and software.

If you want to host a karaoke event, you can just install Syng (Either from on Linux, using the Windows binary or install it from PyPi for everything else) and get started.

You don't need a song library, Syng takes YouTube as it source by default. You can optional add local files and files hosted on an s3 storage if you want.

Users can search and add songs using a web interface.

RE: mastodon.social/@jimmac/115989

I maintain that while this app ecosystem shines best on GNOME (whether on a laptop, desktop, or phone), there would be a ton of value in getting it in front of Android users; a long-term path towards them actually using Linux on mobile once it’s ready for “normies.”

Getting these apps on Android feels far more urgent to me than getting Android apps on Linux phones today.

The chaos in the US is affecting open source software and its developers

It was only a matter of time before the illegal, erratic, inhumane, and cruel behaviours and policies of the second Trump regime were going to affect the open source world in a possibly very visible way. Christian Hergert, longtime GNOME and Linux contributor, employed by Red Hat, wanted t

It’s 2026 and we’re still happily using PostgreSQL 🐘

Open source, boring in the best possible way, stable, predictable, and without surprise license changes every six months ⚖️

Sometimes “just use Postgres” really is the best choice 🪄
