I just had the unsettling experience of waking up thinking it was Thursday morning and then discovering that it was actually Thursday evening. I had (have!) things to do, and now they are all squeezed and some undoable. If it were morning I would (but wouldn't because there'd be no need) bang my head against the wall, but as it's evening I can't because the neighbors are home and I don't want to freak them out and get the cops called on me. This is all so stupid! How did I get so stupid so fast?

I suppose I should eat dinner and make arrangements for grocery fetching tomorrow, though I don't know how I'll stay awake at the right hours. On the bright side, I'm not freezing in the dark, which I have heard is a problem in some places right now. I'm just a bit chilly and due for some more fog tomorrow. I could probably even boost the heat a bit, since this month's utility bill was a bit smaller than I'd expected, and the forecast is suggesting continued mildness is likely. Take a shot? Why not? Some cheer would be worth a couple of bucks. I should use it while I've still got it. The whole damned state is likely to burn next summer.

1. Had a nice lunch at DCA today. The lunar new year menu this year has been all hits so far. Can't wait to try more.

2. Carla arrived home safely last night. A little bit of annoyance at the airport as the terminal that is usually used for American Airlines is completely closed off due to construction, so they have to route the planes to adjoining terminals. Usually they are doing it to the next one over, but this time apparently there was no room, so they sent it two terminals down, which is not only a longer walk, that is the international terminal, so it's much more of a maze to get out of. But she is home now, yay.

3. I went into the office today after we went down to Disneyland, but am planning to work from home again tomorrow.

4. Look at this little Jasper face!

So far, two rejections out of about 10+ resumes out. Apparently across all fields there’s something like a .03% response rate (not sure if that’s positive response only).

I’m running back-of-envelope calculations in my head; assuming there are 60,000 people worldwide who have a certain qualification that I hold, and 10% of us looking to change jobs right now, that’s 6,000 people I’m competing with.  Fewer than that actually as there are technical qualifications as well (biotech versus electrical engineering/computer science) so assume that the biotech won’t be filled by the computer people and vice versa.  So about 3,000 competitors max for a given job that requires this certain qualification.  So 3000/40 weeks means I should be sending out 75?!? applications per week if I want a new job by the end of the year.  (cut this down by a factor of 10, state unemployment generally requires 3 applications per week and since I am still working I can afford to be picky).

I would prefer to do something that’s a bit different from what I currently do (I would love to try large-scale patent analysis aka patent landscaping, or patent litigation) although with my current age and experience, I’m not sure if I can find a job doing that.

I think that my dream job would be teaching intellectual property law to non-lawyers but that’s a very tough gig to get into.

I got tagged into this on Tumblr but might as well give you lot a chance too.

Here's a list of all the WIPS I've touched in the last three years, listed by working title. The deal is that I write 100 words for every vote (no deadline.)

No, you don't get to ask for any more info, though I have talked about some of them before. The oldest one is about twenty-five; the newest was started for yuletide this year. There are 25 different fandoms involved, which is definitely part of the problem, yes.

Challenge #14

In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

You've probably heard of Top Gun at this point. Yes, you - the generic you, the one reading this post right now. I'd be more surprised if it hasn't come up at this point, given the cultural footprint the movies hold, to the point that the first one was considered significant enough to be included in the Library of Congress' National Film Registry and the second one played in movie theaters for over six months in a time when that's practically unthinkable because people kept buying tickets. But maybe you haven't seen it. No shame in that. Maybe you know it's not for you. I can't speak to your tastes. Then again, maybe you're not sure. Maybe you need some enticement. Maybe you need to be told that it's more or less American live-action anime, down to having beach episodes. Maybe you need more than that.

Might I offer a homoerotic volleyball montage, voted "best movie scene" three years in a row by Suck magazine, a fact that made the director tremendously proud?

What about Val Kilmer snapping his teeth at Tom Cruise, a moment he confirmed was improvised?

How about one actor sneaking porn onto set and playing it during a scene, creating the conditions for someone to say "This gives me a hard on" and for someone else to respond "Don't tease me" and for that moment to be included in the final cut?

Were you aware that the first movie's aesthetic was largely inspired by Bruce Weber, noted gay photographer?

How about that for all its endorsement by the US military, it manages to be astonishingly gay by 1986 and contemporary standards, with Kilmer himself being the first Iceman/Maverick shipper?

Would it please you to know that between Top Gun Maverick and the Mission Impossible movies, combined with all the cumulative explosions from his movies, Tom Cruise qualifies as a Dekahelen?

Possibly you'd enjoy knowing that the sequel is a surprisingly somber meditation on aging, loss, regret, and reconciliation in addition to all the thrills of the practical stuntwork?

Or that together, both movies total just over four hours' runtime so it's not even a big commitment, and that all four of those hours are full of beautifully composed scenes and shots?

Maybe you've made up your mind a while ago. I'm cool with that. But if you haven't and you're willing to give it a shot, drop me a line and I can hook you up, no streaming services required.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge 13

Challenge #13

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

I'm going to talk about two communities that are near and dear to my heart (so near & dear that I'm the current mod for both of them).

First is the first fandom space that I ever participated in- [community profile] hardtime100, a drabble writing community for HBO's OZ. When I started as a participant over on LJ, the challenges were weekly and the community was hopping. I made my first fandom friends there and it was a wonderfully supportive group of people that put up with a lot of my non-canon, non-main focused pairings. I looked forward to the new prompts every week and would happily dash off a drabble and then wait around for the next week's prompts. I'm currently tagged as having written 265 pieces for it and I still get a kick out of writing and reading what everybody else has written. The prompting calendar has slowed down a bit, but anyone coming in could write for any prompt at any time and we no longer limit things to just 100 words.

Second is the community for the fest that's coming up in just a few days - [community profile] halfamoon. For fourteen days, people post fics, art, vids, meta, etc. about female characters in fandom. I've been part of it for probably close to ten years now and mod for the last three. There are so many different fandoms involved- some people like medical dramas, some sci-fi, some kids shows, but no matter the fandom, they showcase an amazing bunch of women. The fest has grown from about 75 works to over 200. So, stop by, check out the prompt list (it's the top post) and think about joining us on February 1. You'll be glad you did.

How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go? Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Also, feel free to entice engagement by giving us a preview of what your post covers.

Did you get all you wanted to get from it? Are there things you're going to carry with you for as long as you can? Are you going to continue to challenge yourself? Continue to connect? We can't wait to hear.

I enjoyed it! It's always nice to connect with other fans. I didn't do all of the challenges,  but I enjoyed the ones I participated in.

The timing of the posts did throw me off. I understand that everyone's in different time zones; also, life happens. Technology happens. I get it. But I wonder if it might help to post challenges ahead of time, and/or schedule the posts?

I'm not sure how else I might challenge myself per se, but I post frequently and plan on continuing. I try writing something every day, and DW is a great place for that. I would certainly love to continue making connections.

Thank you to all, and I look forward to the friending meme on the 31st!

musesfool: a loaf of bread (staff of life)
[personal profile] musesfool
As a post-Christmas treat, I bought myself this Emile Henry dutch oven and the instructions say to boil milk in it (and then clean it out) before using it the first time? I've never heard of that, but my other dutch ovens are enameled cast iron, not ceramic. Has anyone heard of this/done this?

anyway, mainly I bought it because I want to try this no-knead everything bread but didn't want to deal with my 6 qt cast iron dutch oven, which is extremely heavy and also tucked away in a closet somewhere. My plan is to mix it up tomorrow after work since it needs an on-the-counter overnight rise, and then bake it Saturday morning. We'll see how it goes!

I might also make garlic and bread soup again this weekend, and also maybe some version of citrus and soy noodles (it's a ramen recipe but I'm just going to use angel hair instead since I already have it) for dinner tomorrow. Oh, and those orange cranberry scones again - the cranberries are still taking up too much room in my freezer and must be used up!

Looking for Beta!

shehungthemoon: (Default)
[personal profile] shehungthemoon posting in [community profile] betaplease

Fandom: MCU (but you don't need to have any MCU knowledge for this)

Characters/Pairings: Sam Wilson/Riley

Rating & Warnings: T (more PG than PG-13), slash, no other warnings

Estimated Fic Length: Currently around 1k. I do plan to write a bit more but definitely nothing over 10k.

Notes: It's a pre-canon, canon-divergence story that is really a world-building excuse, so I don't necessarily need a beta with MCU knowledge, though it'd be a bonus. I'd love to find someone to talk with about flow and just to help me structure it out! No need for much grammar beta-ing, more big-picture. I'm not looking for anything too time-intensive, if that's a concern.

Right now it's a bunch of vignettes, and I'd appreciate help grounding it in a solid story!

Thanks!
Arella
