And by ruh-roh, I mean trouble for me. We had an Interview with the Vampire panel at online Escapade this weekend, and between my making notes for the panel and exploring various things since...I may actually have a new ACTUAL fandom for the first time in a while. I'm currently re-reading The Vampire Lestat, listening to ALL the podcasts, rewatching episodes, looking for fic and vids...and actually making notes for fic! is this what fandom is like? I barely remember. (I've loved this show from the get-go, but now I actually want to write, and that's... new.)

Star Wars: In a (really, really big and well-populated fannish) Galaxy Far, Far Away…
Mod(s): killabeez, Mona Jones
The Star Wars universe has expanded its universe like any good fandom, producing new content that’s arguably better, more detailed, and richer than the early source. And, like fandom, there’s no hint that it will stop expanding any time soon. Discuss!

My notes... )

Let’s Hear it For the Girls:
Mod(s): glymr, killabeez
BL is big business, but femmeslash is fabulous! Let’s talk about women who love women. Bring your favorite recs for fanfic, anime, novels, or live action shows – new or old! – that feature two gals getting together.

killabeez: (KS always)
I did my best to take notes of what was said at the vid review. (We only discussed the premiering vids due to time.)

Heyyyy, it's been so long since I went to a con in person, I forgot that con reports are a thing! Thank you to [personal profile] the_shoshanna for reminding me.

No fun was had! (just kidding )

Reminder—you have just over a week to submit vids to the Escapade Vid Show! We would love to watch your new or almost-new vids on the big screen. Details here:

https://escapadecon.net/vid-show/

The vid submission deadline is Tuesday February 21 at 12 midnight PST!

(Also reminder that you can still register for the in-person-in-Los-Angeles OR the online virtual con: https://escapadecon.net/registration/)

I have so many thoughts (and links) to offer with regard to this panel. Definitely going to continue this thread when I'm less tired and overburdened with life. First, thank you SO MUCH to the people who showed up at 8AM on a Saturday to participate. You were amazing, and your input was aces. Just want to get a couple of shorthand notes down while all of this is fresh in my mind.

1. The biggest difference I noted between our conversation in 2017 (re: representation) and our conversation in 2022 is that representation in our fannish media has come a long way, and the conversation has changed (for several reasons, among them more diverse creators and less US-centric media)—BUT

2. Fandom discourse has not significantly changed! We've moved some bars, but we have a lot more still to move. I know without question that other fans have better, more interesting, and more insightful thoughts. but my main takeaway from 2022 vs. 2017 is that the most important work we have to do is still inside fandom. The call is coming from inside the house, y'all.

3. Also, that doesn't mean we don't still have stuff to say (and do, and support) in terms of media representation. We do. But supporting mainstream representation is secondary to the work we need to do close to home.

Escapade

My wife and I are trying to figure out whether Escapade might be feasible, money-wise. We can swing the airfare, thanks to miles, but is anyone by chance interested in sharing a room with us? That would help a lot. Figured it couldn't hurt to ask!

Feels like it lately, anyway! The deadline for Escapade vid show submissions is this Sunday, February 3rd, at midnight PST. We've got a great show coming together, but there's room for more. Festivids welcome, and if you want to submit them before reveals, I will keep them secret.

I want so much to sign up for the Equinox exchange this round, because the theme is the 90s. But I have my own Escapade premiere to finish, and [personal profile] destina bought me in the Vidukon auction (*Kermit hands!!*), so I have prior commitments. Going to be keeping an eye on treat possibilities, though.

In the meantime, have some wholehearted Festivids recs!

Woo Hoo! for Rokikurama
Fandom: Archer
LOLLLLL. I love this stupid(smart) show so much. And I think this vid will make you laugh even if you have no idea what's going on. Brilliant. The perfect storm of dadaism encompassed by the song+Archer is amazing. (The slap fights. On the drum solo. :D :D)

(Don't See) Too Many Rivals Now for absternr
Fandom: Ocean's 8
UGGGHHH I love this. Dessa! ♥ ♥ (I'm currently reading her book for the second time due to the kind generosity of [personal profile] ride_4ever) I love this so much that I'm wondering if one of my favorite vidders made it—if it turns out this was made by someone I don't already know, I'll be haunting them henceforth. (What I especially love is the attention to facial expressions, gestures, and expressive vocalizations in the song.)

Hey, Brother for dirty_diana
Fandom: Longmire
I haven't seen any recs for this one yet, probably because it's a small fandom, but it's beautiful, and completely accessible even if you don't know the fandom. Warnings for some tough material, though, including child death. But, gorgeousness.

smile (the worst is yet to come) for CherryIce
Fandom: Dead Like Me
This was the first one of the collection I watched, because I adore DLM, and it did not disappoint in any way. Beauty.

Crazy, Classic, Life for eruthros
Fandom: Pose
Everyone is reccing this, for good reason.

Lift for such_heights
Fandom: Ocean's 8
I love instrumental vids, and I loved this one more than I did the movie, which says a lot.

Breaking the Habit for eruthros
Fandom: My Cat from Hell
Just, awwwwwwww. ♥ ♥ I really appreciated the vidder's disclaimer, that all cats would be happy by the end.
killabeez: (Arthur/Merlin armor)
The Escapade vid show would love to show your premiering or 2018 vids!

Each individual vidder may submit up to three vids on which they have participated, whether solo or as part of a group. Vids premiering at Escapade will take precedence over vids that have shown at other cons or been posted online.

ETA: No, you don't have to attend to submit a vid, and if you're wondering what's popular this year, the top fandoms by panel vote were:
  • Marvelverse (MCU and TV, including Venom, Deadpool, streaming shows, etc.)
  • Holmes fandoms
  • Star Trek
  • Dr. Who
  • Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
The vid submission deadline is February 3, 2019 at 12 midnight PST! Read More Here
killabeez: (kitty is pleased)
If you are a vidder who would be willing to support a fan-run convention by making a custom vid as a crowd-funding perk, please email me. And know that the fandom gods and goddesses smile upon you. ♥

The Escapade panel ballot is open! Vote here.

Ballot closes on February 3rd.
killabeez: (Penny Magicians)
Activism seems to be my primary fandom these days, but I felt a little of my old fannish self stir to life when I realized that The Magicians returns on Syfy tonight. I confess, I'm nervous about where season 2 will go, and whether I'll come to regret my attachment to this show, but as I was reading the aforelinked article, I came across this:

The show’s recurring cast in season two includes a talking sloth.

Talking sloth! :D :D :D Recurring cast!

So, there's that. And, yeah, I am looking forward to seeing my Brakebills peeps again.

In other news, I don't think it's been posted officially yet, but I believe the vid show submission deadline for Escapade is going to be midnight PST, on February 5th. Please consider making a vid for (or submitting a recent one to) the show! And pass it on, especially on Twitter, since...yeah.

The Escapade concom is looking for your input before they post the official panel ballot. It's open to everyone, whether or not you can make it this year:

Tell them what fandoms are on your mind right now.

A few quick questions to see what fandoms and topics people are excited about. Please take a moment to answer? Thanks!

My friends, the time is NOW to propose your panel ideas for Escapade 2016! Panel suggestions close on January 15th. I feel a need for more Hannibal and Star Wars and MCU ideas. And maybe a general femslash panel would be fun, as the inaugural TGIFemslash con is in L.A. the weekend before? (I'm still hoping to go to both.) Also, I dream of the day when we might have a Supernatural panel at Escapade that isn't as...uh...fraught as the last one I attended. But I'm chicken to offer one up, unless I have a friend to be my wingman. Anyone?

What's Escapade, you ask? It's only the longest running slash con in the world. Artists, their art show and auction is pretty excellent, so you might want to think about sending in some art. And vidders, this is the perfect audience for your slashy or femslashy vids—no matter the fandom.

Now, I just have to figure out how I can convince people to let me pimp Longmire at them...
