sysfunc For Linux

sysfunc is an open source and portable command-line software project, a library that contains a set of shell functions specifically designed to help UNIX/Linux sysadmins do various system administration tasks. It is fully compatible with the Bash and KSH (Korn Shell) shells.

Key features include file copy, file and folder deletion, symbolic link management, user and group management, line replacement, data block replacement in a file, commenting and uncommenting of lines, logical volume, volume group and filesystem creation, as well as service management.

Supported operating systems and availability

At the moment, the sysfunc shell library has been successfully tested with major GNU/Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Debian, Slackware, Arch Linux and openSUSE, as well as with various BSD flavors, Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX operating systems. It’s designed from the offset to support any Unix/Linux system and can be downloaded only as a source archive.

How to compile and install sysfunc

First of all, you will have to download the source archive, which uses the gz compression method, and extract it somewhere on your Home directory. Open a terminal emulator (only if you’re using a graphical desktop environment) and run the “make” command to compile the project. Next, execute the “make install” command as root to install the library in your /opt directory.

How to use sysfunc

To use sysfunc, navigate to the /opt/sysfunc directory and run the “sh sysfunc.sh” command as root. Default commands include ask, banner, cfg_check, chmod, chown, cleanup, comment_out, compute_os_id, contains_block, create_dir, create_fs, create_group, create_lv, create_lv_fs, create_user, create_vg, debug, delete, delete_group, delete_user, and many more.

Built for Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Despite the fact that it is designed from the ground up to support all UNIX/Linux systems, the sysfunc project was built for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, as it is available for download as RPM packages for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, 5 and 6 operating systems.
