In Memory of John Caldwell

Memorial gifts in honor of John Caldwell (1928–2026) celebrate a life devoted to family, education, and the growth of Nordic skiing in the United States. As a founder of NENSA and author of The Cross-Country Ski Book, he made skiing more accessible to beginners and champions alike and helped build the youth and community pathways that continue to thrive today. Your contribution to NENSA will honor John’s legacy by supporting youth skiing, outdoor education, and causes that reflect John’s lifelong commitments.

NENSA at World Cup Finals

Perhaps the best word on last weekend’s World Cup Finals in Lake Placid comes from the archetype for New England sport valedictories: upon watching watching Ted Williams’ last at bat for the Red Sox improbably sail into the right field bleachers down at Fenway Park, John Updike wrote that it was, “such a perfect fusion of expectation, intention, and execution, that already it felt a little unreal in my head.”

One of the best things we can give young athletes One of the best things we can give young athletes is the opportunity to play, explore, and try lots of different activities. 🚴‍♀️⚽⛰️🏊‍♀️

Research shows that sport sampling helps kids develop the ABCs of athleticism: Agility, Balance, and Coordination, while reducing burnout and injury risk and building a lifelong love of movement.

Whether it’s biking, swimming, soccer, hiking, dance, or free play with friends, every activity helps create stronger, more confident athletes both on and off snow.

There will be plenty of time to specialize later. For now, let kids have fun, build friendships, and discover the joy of movement in many forms!
