Game Development

Engines

Ren'Py my choice of visual novel engine! it's free and easy to use :)
RPG Maker VX Ace i don't actually like the newer rpgmakers... i use this one to make games like Lonely Wolf Treat!
GB Studio for games you can play on a gameboy! another free engine similar to rpgmaker but with a lot more limitations.

Tools

Sublime Text my text editor of choice! i uh... actually don't recommend this unless you prefer customization over ease of use--i didn't like VS code because it was too bulky, so i opted to learn a more lightweight editor, but it's very geared toward people more familiar with programming. the settings are literally a text file you type True/False in, instead of checkboxes. seriously not for everyone!!!
ScreenToGif a screen capture program to easily record gifs. i use this to share progress on my games!
notion i'm trying to move away from this one but haven't found a good replacement... i've used it for many years tho and it's a solid project management tool, they are very annoying about AI but you can contact them to have it turned off for your account.
obsidian this is what i've been trying to switch too from notion but it doesn't work perfectly for my needs (booo!) still, i like it well enough and there are a ton of plugins so you can do a lot with it.

Community

itch.io the home to all my games! it's a great place to host anything from small projects to commercial games. there are always lots of game jams going on, there's bound to be one that inspires you~ but if you don't make games yourself, it's a great place to find unique stuff to play!
NaNoRenO a one-month ren'py based game jam that takes place every march! i've participated lots of times, and it's something i look forward to every year (even though i don't always have time to join...)
Ludum Dare a weekend-long game jam that happens multiple times a year. i've entered this a few times with friends and it's always been a blast and a fun challenge!

Drawing

Software

Clip Studio Paint i draw everything with this!!!! to me it's the perfect middle ground between photoshop (awful) and paint tool SAI (too limited).
Aseprite this is a great program for pixel art! i don't use it for all my sprites because i find clip studio to be more comfortable for me, but aseprite is really the superior program if you want to do sprite art specifically.
TEGAKI draw and tweet a doodle app made for easily posting drawings to twitter bluesky or misskey. i used to use the old web version all the time, but they have a new one that's in beta too! it's very comfortable to draw in.

Hardware

Xencelabs Tablet this is the tablet i use. i like them small so they don't take up too much space on my desk. i'm a weirdo who doesn't use a mouse... i use my tablet for everything except pc games that don't work with it lol.

Community

ComicFury the webcomic host that cares!!! it's an indie site that doesn't shove ads and monetization garbage in your face. i host both of my webcomics here.
itch.io yes i'm linking itchio again... did you know you can post comics there???? it's not just games!!!! sell your pdfs, my dudes!!!!!!

Self Improvement

Animation for Anyone a youtube channel that teaches animation principles in a really simple and approachable way. watching it will make you want to start animating!!! at least it did for me, haha.
Naoki Saito's Kimagure Tensaku series this is a japanese resource, but you can turn on english CC to get the gist of things... it's machine translated so sometimes it reads a little strange, but you can probably piece it together with context. artists submit their illustrations to mr. saito and he "corrects" them, giving explanations for why certain choices improve the impact of the piece or help to better communicate the emotion you're going for. a lot of vids on his channel are very clickbaity, but i find this series to be the most helpful in terms of inspiring you to draw better! extremely high recommendation, i feel like my art improved after watching a lot of these just because i became a lot more willing to use the transform tool more often and be a little messier with my art... sorry my explanation is so long, i should probably just write a blog post about this one.

Music Production

DAW / VST

FL Studio this is what i use to make songs! there's a free demo version where the only limitation is that you can't load saved files... i find it easier to use than other DAWs, but it still has a pretty high learning curve and took me a long time to learn.
Magical 8bit Plug this is a chiptuney VST made by the band YMCK! i know them from their contributions to the katamari games... i was really excited to see that they released something like this, and i used this plugin a lot for Lonely Wolf Treat and BAD END THEATER. i'm more familiar with the first version, but v2 has some nice features as well!
3x Osc this isn't a download link, but a VST that comes packaged with fl studio... it was the first vst that i used, so it's present in a lot of my early songs. it's not like... "good"? but you can make some nice sounds if you play around with it, and it's very straightforward so i like it a lot. i have many presets saved that i still use with this one.
FLEX Chill-Lo-Fi pack i love using flex, and this VST was well worth my $15!!! highly recommended, you can mostly hear this one in the Charm Studies soundtrack.

Vocal Synth

Synthesizer V this is what i use for my vocal tracks! it's very intuitive... the reason i got into it instead of vocaloid was because there was a free voice bank (eleanor forte lite version) that i got to play around with to be sure i actually wanted to make vocaloid-type songs before spending a bunch of money on it lol.
Eleanor Forte my vocal synth of choice! i love eleanor's voice a lot, so i tend to use it for most of my songs.
Kasane Teto SV another good voice bank! if you know anything about vocaloid, teto is a very famous UTAU that finally got a "real" voicebank in 2023! i'm so happy for her... it's a real underdog story. gj teto!!!
