ABOUT US

Mission

Outer Seed Shadow Project (OSS) uses art and design to empower and strengthen underrepresented communities, promoting and building economic and environmental resiliency. Artists and community members come together to design, build and use urban gardens as platforms for educational programming, celebrating identity, knowledge sharing and cultural preservation.

History

In 2016 the Marble Hill Community led by Jacki Fischer, founder of Marble Hill Garden Project started working with artist Juanli Carrión to establish the first OSS permanent garden (OSS#MH). This first garden was planted in May 2017 with 11 beds designed to reflect the shape of the buildings’ blueprint – each bed representing one of the towers of Marble Hill Houses. The plants were selected and planted by residents, and community programming was developed to address health and food literacy.

The name of our organization comes from a concept in plant migration, the Outer Seed Shadow, which was also the tittle of Juanli Carrion’s project that preceded the organization.

The Outer Seed Shadow is the region where there exists an influx of seeds from a species’ reproductive core, but where—due to adverse conditions—seed germination and seedling reproduction are complicated, causing a decrease of those species’ representatives in this region.

Is in this definition of minorities in the biological world where we take inspiration to ensure that all minorities get the chance to thrive in their environments.

Vision

We believe in the power and benefits of partnering with artists and designers as facilitators  for community development. Our vision is to create healthier, more resilient, and more connected communities through the co-creation of urban gardens, artwork, and educational programming.

We use the garden as a starting point for our programs. Artists and designers team up with communities to build these gardens where challenges, ideas or identities are addressed. Food literacy, renewable energy, race, cultural coexistence, nutrition, self-sufficiency, and physical and mental wellbeing have been addressed at our gardens, reflected in the design of the gardens’ structure, layout, plants and activities.

The sense of interconnectedness, mutualism, and care that strives from the act of gardening creates the ideal place to foster more sustainable and healthier communities. We envision our work making an impact in the following ways:

  • Culturally: Our gardens and programs are spaces where culture and heritage are honored and passed down to future generations.
  • Socially: Our gardens provide access to food, opportunity to learn new skills, and team building.
  • Economically: Our gardens and programs contribute to mentoring self-sufficiency, community ownership; and incubate ideas that can support the local economy.
  • Environmentally: Our gardens and programs enable us to practice eco-stewardship; and to be spaces within the larger urban environment that strengthen and sustain how we care for the planet.

Historical: Temporary Gardens (2014-2016)

Between 2014-2016 Juanli Carrión worked with communities in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Valencia and Murcia in Spain and Malmo in Sweden, to build five temporary gardens addressing subjects such as access to food, race, refugee migration, cultural coexistence, colonialism, gentrification and education. These gardens served as the foundation of what OSS Project is today.

SUPPORT

Support Outer Seed Shadow

Since the beginning, our fundraising efforts have cultivated four thriving gardens, supporting more than 100 gardeners who grow food, create art, and share stories. Our public programs have served more than 1500 people with an unique blend of art, ecology, and cultural education, connecting neighbors back to the land and to one another. We have partnered with 20+ stakeholders to provide programing including Community Centers, Senior Centers, Nurseries, Public Schools, and Tenant Associations.

Please help us keep building these transformational places, and become an active part of what we do!

This fall/winter, we invite you to step into action with Outer Seed Shadow. Our gardens are more than green spaces—they are living artworks that bring our communities together to foster connection, celebrate culture, and promote ecological resilience through gardening and event programming. Your support ensures these gardens continue to thrive as vibrant hubs of community and culture.

Our Goal: $20,000

This goal reflects the shortfalls of the Federal Funding cuts, which are putting our organization at risk of having to cut our services at a pivotal moment when we are building a new garden and transitioning existing gardens to be self-sufficient. We need your support more than ever.

Two Ways to Participate

  1. Make a Donation – Your contribution directly supports the creation and maintenance of OSS gardens, community programs, and artist collaborations.
  2. Host a Fundraiser – Gather your friends and family to support you and OSS this spring. Set up your own fundraising page and encourage others to get involved.

Other Ways to Support

  1. Donor-Advised Funds: If you need help, consult with your financial advisor to figure out the best course of action.
  2. Stock Donations: Reach out to us at email@outerseedshadow.org for more information.
  3. Employer Matching: Check with your HR representative to see if your company offers a matching gift program.
  4. Legacy Giving: Leave a lasting impact by including OSS in your estate planning.
  5. Dedications: Honor a loved one by dedicating a garden bed or program in their name.

🌱 “Rooted Voices: Gardens of Identity and Resilience” 🌱

Where seeds tell stories — and communities grow stronger.

Across New York City, OSS Project partners with artists and residents to co-create public gardens that celebrate culture, memory, and ecological connection. Each garden is a living sculpture — a shared space where neighbors gather to plant what reminds them of home, to share stories of heritage, and to learn from the land and one another.

This season, we invite you to help these gardens flourish.

Your support for the OSS Project will fund new community gardens, sustain existing ones, and expand public programming that blends art, ecology, and cultural expression. Together, we can cultivate spaces where underrepresented voices take root and thrive.

When you support the Rooted Voices Campaign, you’re helping to create and sustain community-led gardens across New York City.

Your donation directly funds:

  • New gardens are built in neighborhoods with limited access to green space
  • Maintenance and supplies for existing OSS gardens
  • Artist and storyteller stipends to co-create programs with residents
  • Public workshops and cultural events that activate the gardens year-round

A portion of the proceeds will go towards the Jacki Fischer Memorial Fund to help OSS Project hire and manage additional team members to keep the community involved.

The Jacki Fischer Memorial Fund honors the enduring vision of our late Director and Co-Founder, Jacki Fischer, who became an ancestor this past summer. Jacki deeply believed in investing directly back into the community by building leaders from within. A portion of every gift will fund this legacy, creating meaningful leadership development opportunities and employment for community members. Join us in keeping these voices rooted and vibrant,
and help us plant the next generation of leaders!

OSS Project, Inc. is a 501c3 charitable organization and all donations are 100% tax-deductible.

Since the beginning our fundraising efforts have supported the development of four gardens as art places where hundreds of gardeners grow food, make art and celebrate their culture and heritage while growing stronger in their communities.

Our public programs have impacted more than a thousand people’s lives thanks to your generous support. Please help us keep building these transformational places, and become an active part of what we do!
