Power Hours FAQ

I run power hours fairly often, and that's only going to increase as the semester starts and I start studying heavily, so instead of repeating myself every time I extend a new invite I thought I'd just write up a small FAQ instead.

What's a Power Hour?

Power hours are a term for something that my friend Andre and I would do when we were pursuing our first degrees. Basically, we agree to start at a certain time, and then for the following hour we work on anything we need to—it can be studying, or homework, or chores, or working on fic/art, or cooking dinner, running errands, whatever it is that you need to do. Then, at the end of the hour, we check back in and share how we did, and generally cheer each other on. We take a break (usually 15-20 minutes) and then repeat power hours until we feel like stopping.

Power hours work because it holds you accountable to someone else (since you have to report how you did), but in a fun way because everybody praises you for whatever you accomplish, no matter how big or small :D. It also helps you feel less alone while you're working, which can give you enough motivation to overcome any anxiety and really focus. Power hours work incredibly well for me and have boosted my productivity immensely—I hope you can join me for one and see if it works for you, too!

How do I find out when you're running a power hour?

I announce them at random on my twitter (@viridiancities). So uh, be friends with me there I guess? If we're not friends yet and you'd like to be, leave a comment or send a DM with your twitter username and let's be mutuals.

If you love power hours and want me to @ you every time I'm running one, leave a note here with your username and I'll add you to my "ding them" list. :)

You announced a power hour but I found out late and it already started ;_;

Latecomers are always welcome! Just start working and then join us at the end when we all check back to see how we did. If you don't want to do that or only 10 minutes are left or something, just reply to my "hey I'm running a power hour now" tweet and I'll rope you into the next power hour.

Can I run power hours myself?

I encourage you to! They're a fabulous productivity technique that you can use anywhere to do anything with. Round up your friends and help each other get stuff done!

That's all I can think of for now. Hope you can join me for a power hour in the future!
