Unbreaking Team @ the Unbreaking: This week at Unbreaking, January 16
Beginning in late November and escalating through early January, the Trump administration has sent 3,000 ICE and CBP agents into Minneapolis–St. Paul. For comparison, the “Operation Midway Blitz” surge in Chicago deployed about 300 federal immigration agents. The Chicago metro area’s population is roughly 2.5 times the size of the Twin Cities’, so the Minneapolis–St. Paul operation has sent about 10 times as many enforcers into a much smaller population center.

Kelly Hayes @ Organizing My Thoughts: Choosing Each Other in a Time of Terror
Trump is waging war on our communities, and we don’t need “better training” for our attackers.

Scott Meslow @ the Verge: How much can a city take?
The most heartening thing about this deeply disturbing moment is seeing how consistently and forcefully Minnesotans of all demographics have been pushing back.

Fred Glass @ Jacboin: The Citywide General Strike Has a Rich History in America
In response to the killing of Renee Good and the ICE invasion, the Minneapolis labor movement has issued the nation’s first citywide general strike call in nearly 80 years

Andrea Pitzer @ Degenerate Art: Into the abyss
You can’t reform a concentration camp regime. You have to dismantle it and replace it. We have a thousand ways to do it. And most U.S. citizens—particularly white ones—have the freedom to act, for now, with far less risk than the many people currently targeted.

The Black Phone is a film that's vaguely been on my list of things to see for a few years now, but I never got around to it. This vid slaps though! Highly recommend watching with the lights dimmed and headphones on. Such good build and atmosphere.

Also, while I'm not in Heated Rivalry fandom, I am a fan of excellent vidders. And I know for a fact these vidders are most excellent. *firm nod*

(and I won't do today's Snowflake Challenge, but you're all awesome and enrich my life in a myriad of ways ❤️)

Like, this really shouldn't work? But now it's an Armand song? I can't make it not be! )

Also, a fun game some yt channels play is picking a deck for each of the characters in a show they love, and to me Mio Im's Tarot screams Armand. It's got something to do with the sparse nature of it, the limited bone/dust gray palette, obviously all the bones hehe.

In somebody else's story.

+ I'm so behind on Snowflake Challenge, and don't really have time to put in the effort I'd like or see all the cool entries. Boo work. If the Make A Challenge rolls around again, I've come up with a low effort entry; the big one will have to wait until next year.

+ Last night's dreams were a wild mess, featuring: a matrilineal sex cult, a documentary about comedians working on a SNL clone that got big after the show (with commentary), a musical number about period poops to the tune of I wanna dance with somebody. Not featured: me.

I haven't had the time or energy to read or watch anything this trip, I think my brain is lodging a complaint?

+ [community profile] halfamoon is a fourteen day challenge celebrating female characters in fandom, and they're looking for volunteers to sign up for a calendar day (not a theme day) and read/view/appreciate the contributions for that day.

+ (saved for myself to look over later) European alternatives for popular services.

+ Democrats have managed to get all anti-trans riders stripped from the final appropriations bills (inc HHS and Ed).

+ Anti-Aging Injection Regrows Knee Cartilage and Prevents Arthritis.
In the study, the injectable treatment not only rebuilt cartilage but also stopped arthritis from developing after knee injuries similar to ACL tears, which are common among athletes and active adults. A pill-based version of the same therapy is already being tested in clinical trials aimed at treating muscle weakness associated with aging.

+ X-Files Reboot: Ryan Coogler Shares Exciting Plot Update.
“It wouldn’t be X-Files if we didn’t do both,” Coogler said about the show’s format. “We intend on having both monsters of the week and also the overarching conspiracy.”

If this man brings us back monster of the week shenanigans? PRAISE BE.

green and red northern lights

green and red northern lights

The oddest thing is, usually I take pictures of the Northern Lights and they turn out so disappointing compared to the actual thing I saw; yesterday all I could see were faint white lights, and the colors only came up through my camera. No clue what would cause that. Still, a good time was had oooo'ing and aaahhhh'ing.

Things are happening at full speed this trip lol. I haven't even had time to look at my second batch of orca pictures from yesterday (we've left them behind now).

Wheeeee

Pick a thing or two that sums up how you're doing today, this week, in general, and tell me about it in the 5-7-5 syllables of a haiku.

+ Of course the actual post got swallowed before I found internet again. Weather absolute shit, Internet shit, boat very warm, zero fish, zero internet in my cabin with the new setup. I can't be fucking bothered to write it up again.

+ One of the things open in my tabs was the latest friending meme at [community profile] friending_memes, and maybe time without internet was a good thing there. Came to the conclusion that actually, my circle is pretty damn great and I don't feel I get around to commenting as often as I'd like. So skipping the meme, but since I fiddled with the response a bit I'm copying it over here. Read more... )

I did appreciate that the meme made me dig back through the year for my happiest memories, and I'm thinking it's a good idea to try and note those days down more. They really do fade into the blur if not.

+ While I may not have the internet to grab the latest Fallout episode - *grumps again* - you can all head on over to [community profile] retro_icontest to see the results of the icon battle me, [personal profile] naushika, and [personal profile] narnialover7 had.
