Hard Things

Jan. 27th, 2026 05:27 pmNew sediment records from the Norwegian Sea offer a rare, close-up look at how quickly nature can unravel when the planet warms. During a past episode of extreme global warming, coastal forests along the Arctic margin collapsed within just a few centuries.
What followed was a cascade of change – widespread wildfires, heavy soil erosion, and a rush of carbon back into the atmosphere. The study shows how land ecosystems can rapidly flip from storing carbon to releasing it, amplifying warming long after the initial trigger.

Jan. 27th, 2026 10:01 pmTo my pride, last week I'd suggested they move the children's books they wanted to save to the closet in one of the kid's rooms. They decided to pack them up to move them, so last week I packed them up - too much per box to be practical, but finally contained. Today they said they wanted them in one of the kid's rooms, so I unpacked, sorted, and put them all away, and they were deeply pleased with the end results.
There's a lot to get through, and there's rooms of books in this place. They're coming out of closets, they turn up in boxes, they're hiding behind each other, and I haven't even touched the other side of the apartment. Rarely do I look forward to having to be at work in the morning, but then, rarely do I have this much fun at the job.

I'd like my trash TV paramedics to be a little less trashy!
Jan. 27th, 2026 07:13 pmBut I was looking at what was on Crave, since I have that right now, and saw that there was a new show called 9-1-1 Nashville, and thought I'd give it a whirl.
Boy, whatever new direction notes they got, were not my thing. It's all about some rich guy and his sons fighting with each other, and a scheming baby mamma, and we basically don't meet any of the other characters in the pilot. How on earth did they talk Chris O'Donnell into this nonsense? He can't be that hard up!
Plus the rescues were just very silly. And this is by standards of the 9-1-1 franchise, which is already extremely silly. This girl gets carried into the air by a kite! Not like a special kite, just a... regular one. A tornado is bearing down on a country music festival and they save it with the power of heart!
I vaguely considered watching the second half of the pilot before deciding there's got to be other trash shows I'd enjoy more. When is the new Stargate show happening?
I think if you're interested in foe-yay half brothers who want to fuck, you might be in business?

Jan. 27th, 2026 07:01 pm2. I worked from home today, partly because I was expecting a large package, but partly because I didn't really have any need to go into the office. I think I'm going to do the same tomorrow.
3. The package I was expecting today was a new CD rack for the garage. Carla has a nice stereo system out there (including a turntable, though she hasn't gotten hardcore into collecting vinyl and is still mostly into CDs) and she's been building up her CD collection again after we sold off a lot of them years ago. Sometime last year I bought a new CD rack in the same style as the one we'd had in the house (which we also moved out to the garage), but when I went to order a third one now, they're completely discontinued! D: I really would have preferred to have everything matching, but we settled on one that's at least somewhat similar (light wood). I was expecting to have to put it together but it came completely assembled, so all I had to do was get it out of the box and set it upright. Nice!
4. I love when they sleep with all their limbs together like that. So cozy!

and don’t you hate me best?

Yesterday's big event was the arrival of my socks, the culmination of a month-long tour of New England:
#
Tuesday. Sunny and cold. Sitting in the comfy chair in my office with the happy light looking out over the long backyard, where Snow Devils are dancing in the Sun.
In my quest for rest, I've been going back to bed after I wake up at 5:00 or 6:00 instead of going to work, and sleeping for another hour or so. I did that this morning, so I'm late getting the day going.
Checking the mail, I see that B&H thinks my new tablet will be here tomorrow. That will be exciting.
Aside from the Gala Celebrations for the release of the mass-market edition of Diviner's Bow, I'll be cleaning up the piles as I've been swearing to do for 3 days and looking at the taxes. I'm probably calling the CPA.
An arduous day.
How's everybody doing today?
Firefly was helping me keep an eye on the Snow Devils.
Dictated to my phone
#
Wow, it got late. I guess you'll either rest voluntarily or rest will come for you.
For those curious about the alpaca socks -- I'm never taking them off again. They are soft, they are warm, they are (bearing in mind that I am a Sock Person and not a Socks are the Devil's Work Person) -- comforting.
They are pricey at full-price, so yay! after-Christmas local shopping for the win.
I need to strip the bed and start a load of laundry -- any laundry at this point, and then I'll get with the piles (yes, yes, I keep saying this). Lunch will be canned salmon, veggie, and rice stirfry, Because I Can.
. . . I think I may need some rock 'n roll music to motivate me. And a glass of cold tea.
Onward.

Aaand, I stoopidly corrected my email address with an organization where I was chief babysitter for a while, and now my inbox is ... annoying.
. . .
Let's go with annoying.
The SnowJoe is still charged, so the battery doesn't have to come out to be charged. Which means I have time to acquire a C-clamp, which I thought I had at least three, but I can't find them, and the crescent wrench won't open wide enough, nor the groove pliers, and as the problem is hand-strength, tongs is not my tool. I have to depress a button on each side of the battery while simultaneously pulling the battery off of its prongs. And Joe isn't heavy enough, even with my foot on him, to serve as a counterweight.
I did not, I'll note, have this difficulty last year.
Getting old sucks. You heard it here first.
I don't like to leave the battery in Joe, but I guess that's gonna hafta be how we go.
Lunch will be now, and I do believe it will include a rum 'n coke.
#
Stirfry turned out great. I used some orange marmalade in my stirfry sauce. Also -- no rum 'n coke. A little while ago, a friend gave me a bottle of Barefoot Boy blueberry wine, which announces on the label that it! is! sweet! It's also very light -- 7.5% -- and? if you mix it into Sanpellegrino Limonata? makes a really nice drink.
And I? only have one more pile to bring under my dominion.
#
Note to self: Do not listen to "Run away to Mars" ever again.
Still working on beating the last pile into submission.
In reviewing my email from B&H Photography, I note that my tablet is supposed to be reaching me tomorrow through the agency of FedEx, so I'm glad I didn't put any money on that proposition. The original prediction was that it would be here on Thursday, which is fine. The only thing that makes any of this tricky is that -- in B&H's worldview, anyway -- I have to sign for the package, and in order to do that, I need to be home.
I say the above with a certain amount of irony. The last time I remember us being told that someone would have to sign for a package was when we had ordered our Edge phones. I was due at radiation and Steve had been driving me, but I assured him that I could drive myself (which I did, so -- not forsworn, and we will skate lightly over the dicey bits) while he waited for the package.
Which! -- You're ahead of me, aren't you? -- The FedEx guy blithely left on the steps, and wandered away without even ringing the bell, which is where I found them when I came home.
. . . I wonder if there's a horror anthology in FedEx stories?

Jan. 27th, 2026 06:15 pmIn other news, I found that a stint overnight in the fridge greatly improved those cupcakes. I wasn't impressed by them at room temp (texture was super spongy), but they're really good with the extra time in the cold! So if you need vegan cupcakes, the KAB recipe is recommended, especially if you make them ahead of time.
Meanwhile, it looks like we might get a nor'easter this coming weekend? A big storm potentially, though with less snow and more wind. No warming of temperatures anyway. Oy.

Jan. 27th, 2026 09:12 pmThis Year 365 songs: January 27th
Jan. 27th, 2026 05:00 pmThe first mention of longtime Goats member Peter Hughes occurs in the annotations for this song, though it feels more like a foreshadowing of his entrance into the story than a proper introduction to Peter Hughes. Hughes was running a tape label, and Darnielle decided to just make a song a day for ten days and release the resultant tape (this track is from that tape). This is not the story of how he met Hughes, but it seems to be the start of his professional interaction/collaboration with Hughes.
The song is all right, but I don't have a lot to say about it.
Judge My Upcoming Baihe TBR!
Jan. 27th, 2026 09:48 pm- The Flame Tree (凤凰花, pinyin: fenghuang hua) by Jue Ge (绝歌). Jue Ge has been writing on JJWXC since 2008, and is still actively publishing. Her yanqing novels seem to be somewhat better known, but she's written a lot more baihe than yanqing. I've been meaning to read something by her for a while. To continue my education in old-school baihe (and also because this novel is a reasonable length), I've decided to start with her 2009 CEO romance The Flame Tree.
- An Incantation for Subduing a Dragon (降龙诀, pinyin: xiang long jue) by Shi Wei Yue Shang (时微月上). Protagonist Luo Qingci transmigrates into a xianxia novel and into the body of (draconic) female lead Ruan Li's evil, conniving shizun. After being put off by the length for years, I decided to take the plunge.
- Time (时光, pinyin: shiguang) by Ning Yuan (宁远). Supposedly her realist tragic masterpiece. Looking forward to having my heart ripped out.
- Calming the Wind and Waves (定风波, pinyin: ding feng bo) by Yu Huan (于欢). Yu Huan has a pretty good, though niche, reputation as an author of fairly serious historical novels with political themes. Again, I've been meaning to read her for a while and been again put off by the sheer length of her better-known novels. I've picked this title (which clocks in at a more manageable 543K words) to give me a taste of her work and see if I want to invest my precious reading time in something longer. Plus point: this is set in the Tang Dynasty, during Wu Zetian's reign.
- 365 Ways of Surviving at a High Difficulty Level (三百六十五种高难度活法, pinyin: sanbai liushiwu zhong gao nandu huo fa) by Mo Ran Piao (莫然漂). Thriller that seemingly begins with one of the leads in a psychiatric institution. Holdover from the last iteration of the TBR pile as I simply couldn't find the energy to read something that was 712K words long. Second time lucky, hopefully!
- Song of the Peach Blossom (桃花曲, pinyin: taohua qu) by Ruo Hua Ci Shu (若花辞树), a historical romance between a raised-as-a-boy prince and her consort. I pre-ordered the Taiwanese print edition of this and it has just shipped, so I'm keen to read it. And also to confirm a Theory I have about the author's very specific kink (well not that specific as I'm sure quite a lot of people have the same kink, but still.
But honestly why are all the interesting-sounding novels so. Long.
Birdfeeding
Jan. 27th, 2026 02:22 pmI fed the birds. I've seen a large flock of sparrows, a pair of cardinals, two starlings, and a mourning dove.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 1/27/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.
I put out more birdseed. I've seen a male and a female cardinal pulling kernels off the corncob.
EDIT 1/27/26 -- I did more work around the patio.
I refilled the hopper feeder again. I've seen a flock of mourning doves and two male cardinals.
EDIT 1/27/26 -- I did more work around the patio.
I am done for the night.

Snowflake Challenge 14: Meta
Jan. 27th, 2026 12:26 pmIn your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Trying to convince our friends and loved ones to join our fandom is a frequent activity for many of us. It's great to have someone to talk to and obsess with! This is your chance to try to entice people into your fandom or to gently introduce new fans to your favorite parts of it.
Maybe you'd like to write a manifesto on your favorite ship. Maybe you'd like to write a breakdown of the many characters that appear in a long running franchise. Maybe you'd like to rec the fics you think everyone in your fandom should read. The possibilities are endless!
If you need inspiration (or are confused about terms), check out the Fanlore pages (with definitions, examples, and links!) for Ship Manifesto, Primer, PowerPoint, Rec, Newbieguide , and Crack Van. There are also DW communities like

Snowflake Challenge 0206 #14: Primers and Recommendations
Jan. 27th, 2026 10:58 amChallenge #14
Create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom.
The two of those things are quite different, I might note. The promo is about trying to get people into a fandom based on the strength of the canonical materials (whether the smart writing, the intricate plot, or the hotness of the actors), and the rec list is about getting people into a fandom (or at least the transformative fandom part) based on the fanworks that are available to someone. Neither of these methods are inherently wrong, but depending on your approach, someone might get into the fandom with radically different ideas of what the source material or the fandom is about. (This is not necessarily a bad thing, but approaching something from the fannish side might make you suspect there's more nuance and depth to the source material than there actually is.)
Anyway, since I am both not very good at collecting new fandoms and not very good at getting and remembering works in the fandoms I have, this would normally leave me in a pickle about what to do, except I have plenty of older fandoms and recommendations for you that will make up for my utter lack of newish fandoms for you to experience.
