PremUbuntu – Food For People South Africa

We are a locally rooted extension of The Prem Rawat Foundation’s global Food for People initiative. Our work centres around one simple but powerful idea: that every human being has the right to dignity, and that begins with access to a nutritious meal.

Within the Cape Flats communities, we are working to tackle hunger – not as a one-time handout, but through consistent, sustainable support that uplifts children and empowers families.

Over 70% of Cape Flats households face daily economic hardship.

Many families are forced to survive on less than R3,500 a month (roughly $196 US or €175 Euro) – well below the poverty line.

60% of children arrive at school without having eaten.

For most, the meal they receive at school is the only one they can rely on that day.

1 in 3 children drop out of school before Grade 10.

One in three children drop out of school before Grade 10.

Youth unemployment in the area exceeds 50%.

Over 70% of households in the Cape Flats live below the poverty line.

1 in 4 young children face stunting.

Malnutrition in early childhood leads to irreversible health and developmental challenges.

Children grow up around violence.

Gang activity in the Cape Flats exposes children to trauma long before they reach the classroom.

A Field, A Community, and a Reason to Show Up

The storm brought conditions that were difficult for Cape Town broadly, but for communities like Manenberg the impact runs deeper. Informal housing and limited drainage infrastructure mean that heavy rain doesn’t just inconvenience — it damages, displaces, and disrupts. Schools were closed across the Western Cape for the day, stripping away one of the few consistent structures available to children and families in the area.

Bridgetown in the Rain: Showing Up for Those Who Show Up for Others

Cape Town was hit by a severe storm bringing torrential rain, strong winds, and widespread disruption. While the city as a whole was impacted, communities across the Cape Flats faced a disproportionate share of the consequences — inadequate housing and poor drainage infrastructure meaning that bad weather quickly becomes a crisis at ground level. With the Western Cape Education Department closing all schools for the day and recommending that Early Childhood Development Centres follow suit, many families were left without their usual support structures at an already challenging time.
