Dear All,
After a hiatus after COVID PubhD has now returned in Nottingham as of March 2025. Now in the hands of Benedict Claxton Stevens, Maggie Johansen and support from Rebecca Dewy. Our great thanks to Kash and Regan for entrusting us with the torch.

We are also at a new home at the Barley Twist who have been incredibly supportive!

We now have 6 Events under our belt at the new location and many more to come. Still once a month, 3 speakers, in a pub, with research. Looking forward to seeing you all back if we haven’t already.

Come find us at our Facebook group where events are posted. The WordPress site is now also up to do date and we also have a new Mailing List if your not fond of Facebook.

PubhD is 6 years old!

PubhD (from “Pub” + “PhD”) is now 6 years old! We created the Twitter account and this website in November 2013. The first event was held in Nottingham on January 22, 2014.

The idea quickly spread across the UK and into other countries. There have now been PubhD events in Ireland, Portugal, Finland, France, Rwanda, Belgium and Poland.

The are currently over 20 active PubhD locations. The full list can be found here.

At each PubhD event, three researchers, from any academic discipline, explain their work to an audience in a pub in exchange for a pint or two. The talks are at a “pub level” – the idea is that you don’t have to be an academic to understand the talks.

The first PubhD outside of Europe: PubhD Kigali!

PubhD starts up in Africa tonight.

Congratulations to Lee Crawfurd for getting it up and running so quickly. It took him about one month from his initial “I’m looking to set up a PubhD in Kigali, Rwanda” email to the first event!

The topics and speakers are:

  • Politics: Ethnography of citizenship, political space, and discourse in Rwanda, Chaste Niwe, Yale University.
  • Drones: Using Drones for 3D/spectral imaging of natural and built environments, and the Internet of Things, Anthony Vodacek, Rochester Institute of Technology.
  • Health: What we know about Venous thromboembolism among pregnant women in Kigali hospitals, Christine R. G. Ashimwe, U of Global Health Equity, Rwanda.

PubhD comes to France! PubhD Bordeaux starts 6 June 2017

On 6 June 2017, the first PubhD Bordeaux event will take place at The HMS Victory pub. It is being organised by Lise Monneraud from Université de Bordeaux.

At each PubhD event, three researchers, from any subject area, explain their work to an audience in a pub in exchange for a drink or two. The talks are at a “pub level” – the idea is that you don’t have to be an academic to understand the talks.

The subjects at the first event will be:

  • The idea of “loyal cooperation” in the EU.
  • Ions acceleration via lasers in plasmas.
  • Lifestyles (notably nutrition) and Alzheimer’s disease.

New PubhD Locations: Porto, Oxford and Tampere

More PubhDs have started up around Europe: Tampere (Finland) and Porto (Portugal) had their first events last month and have future ones already lined up. Oxford (UK) have their first event next week.

At each PubhD event, three researchers, from any subject area, explain their work to an audience in a pub in exchange for a drink or two. The talks are at a “pub level” – the idea is that you don’t have to be an academic to understand the talks.

PubhD Sheffield starts next week!

A couple of years ago, ScienceGrrl ran a few PubhD events in Sheffield. However, it’s been dormant since then.

Now Devon Smith and Emily Fisk are starting up PubhD Sheffield officially, with their own Twitter account and a shiny new website.

At each PubhD event, three researchers, from any subject area, explain their work to an audience in a pub in exchange for a drink or two. The talks are at a “pub level” – the idea is that you don’t have to be an academic to understand the talks. PubhD started in Nottingham in January 2014 and now there are 20 branches around Europe! A full list can be found on the PubhD Locations page.

The first PubhD Sheffield event is next week on Wednesday 2 November 2016 at Harrisons 1854.

The speakers and topics are:

  • Isobel Williams: Giving meaning to feelings in Functional Neurological Symptoms
  • Billy Bryan: Making medics mindful with feedback
  • Emily Fisk: “Starve a Fever, Feed a Cold” – uncovering metabolism and how it could help fight antimicrobial resistance
