Rembrandt’s iconic style of painting

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was a Dutch painter and etcher who is considered one of the greatest artists in European history. He lived during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century and was known for his portraits, landscapes, and historical scenes.

Image

Rembrandt’s style is characterized by his use of chiaroscuro, which is the contrast between light and dark. He often used dramatic lighting to create a sense of depth and three-dimensionality in his paintings. He also used loose brushstrokes and thick layers of paint, which gave his paintings a textured and expressive quality.

Rembrandt’s portraits are particularly famous for their psychological depth and realism. He captured his subjects’ individual personalities and emotions through their facial expressions and body language. He was also known for his use of warm, earthy colors, which gave his paintings a sense of warmth and intimacy.

Overall, Rembrandt’s style was highly influential and has had a lasting impact on the art world. His unique use of light and shadow, combined with his ability to capture the human spirit, continue to inspire artists today.

Shepherd – 牧人. Feng Shui – 风水.

The Chinese words “feng” and “shui” translate to mean “wind” and “water,” respectively, which are associated with good luck, and good health. Most people will say that a home that has been “feng shui’d” feels more peaceful and harmonious. To increase the amount of good vibes in your home, follow these easy feng shui home decor tips for a lucky, prosperous Year. This concept derived from an ancient poem that talks about human life being connected and flowing with the environment around it.

What Is Feng Shui?

The philosophy of feng shui is a practice of looking at our living spaces and working environment and striking a balance with the natural world.

In Asian culture, this philosophy is called the Tao, which translates to mean “the way.” Taoism is the way of nature and all the basic principles of feng shui reflect nature. Take a look at the essential principles of feng shui: the commanding position, the bagua, and the five elements.

The parable about the joker shepherd.

“..The shepherd was alone herding cows and bulls. He got bored and wanted to see people. He shouted, rustled: “Wolves, wolves!” People from the village came running with sticks and chains. They looked around, at first they were surprised, then they spat and went to their village.

Time passed and the bored shepherd again shouts: “Wolves, wolves!” People did not come so soon, but they came running. Again there are no wolves, again deception – they scolded the shepherd and went back.

And soon they hear from above the voice of the shepherd for the third time: “Wolves, wolves, wolves!” People laughed, dismissed it and did not go – they did not believe it. Meanwhile, the wolves really ran up and ate all the cows. The shepherd, who had lost the whole herd and was left with one single bull, slowly wandered home….”

The parable shows that this is what liars achieve – from a certain moment they are not believed, even when they tell the truth

Taming the bull

Yes, one cannot do without a whip and rope – at first the bull could break free at any moment and rush away along the road, throwing up clouds of dust. But when I finally pacified him, he became so meek that even not tied up obeys his master.

When one idea comes in, another goes away. If the first thought arises due to enlightenment, then the subsequent ones will also be true. But if the first thought arises as a result of delusion, she and the rest will be wrong. However, delusion does not come from the outside – only you can fall into error. So when you lead your bull, hold it tight by the ring threaded through the nose and do not allow the slightest hesitation.

Sailing On Moliceiro

sailing on the canal in Moliceiro. Traditional boat in Aveiro, Portugal

Moliceiro is the name given to the boats that sail in the Ria de Aveiro, the marshy lagoon region of the Vouga River.

These boats were originally used to harvest moliço, a type of algae used as agricultural fertilizer, but nowadays they are more commonly adapted for tourist purposes in Aveiro city.

HISTORY

Moliceiro were developed in the 19th century and were used for the collection of the algae until around the 1960’s when chemical fertilizers became more common.

The algae is usually pulled aboard using a large wooden rake, known as an ancinho.

DESIGN

The boats have a flat bottom and shallow draft which is perfectly suited to the waters of the lagoon, which is typically only 1 or 32 meters deep.

They have a tapered hull with a raised sickle-shaped bow. Usually, they are between 15 and 18 meters long and 2.5 to 3 meters wide.

The moliceiros are built in Scots pine or in umbrella pine by local crafts people in the villages of Murtosa and Ilhavo on the Ria de Aveiro. The secret of making these boats is passed down from generation to generation.

The design is similar to the Venetian gondola, Viking longships, the donis (or dhonis) of the Maldives and similar vessels found at Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh and even dugout canoes in parts of Senegal.

They also have design features to vessels found farther down the Atlantic Coast of Portugal in Nazaré.

The boats are flat-bottomed are were navigated using a sail, a pole or the boats were pulled by rope. The rudder can be lifted out of the water. Nowadays the boats are powered by outboard motors.

There is space for the crew to sleep and even a small kitchen on traditional boats.
