Reading and laughing
Jan. 28th, 2026 08:27 amI went to bed at a reasonable time yesterday evening and started a new book with delighted anticipation. "Reading time! I'll get to fall asleep peacefully with my brain tummy full of stories <3" I thought. The way my tbr pile works is that I add recs to my library queue and most of the time by the time the book gets to me 1) I've completely forgotten what it was about and 2) there's a good chance I'll enjoy it because I did add it based on a rec that intrigued me to start with.
To set the scene further: in winter, the cat often climbs onto my stomach while I read because the blankets are thicker and fluffier.
ALAS! The book I started was Skye Falling by Mia McKenzie!!! I'm only about 70 pages in AND I LAUGHED SO HARD!! SO HARD!!!! Poor cat quickly abandoned me since it must have felt like a rodeo machine thing up there, but I was nearly crying and my non-existent abs were aching by the time I stopped reading.
Not the most restful way to fall asleep, I'll be honest. But oh my god. As much as I sometimes wince with some of her specific choices, Skye's internal voice is just. Just. Incredible. I'm not finished yet so no spoilers please :D But I'm fairly sure I picked up the rec from someone here so thank you to whoever mentioned it on their journal :D Wow. Like I laugh and cry and gasp often when reading, but I can't remember the last time I was non-stop guffawing like this from a book.

Dear Casefic Author
Jan. 27th, 2026 05:37 pmI use the same name everywhere so I am
beatrice_otter on AO3. Treats are awesome.
I would rather get a story you were happy with than "well, she said she liked x, so I guess I have to do x even though I don't like x and/or am not inspired that way." This letter is long with lots of suggestions and preferences if you find it helpful, but feel free to ignore it if it is not helpful. I'm fairly easy to please; I've been doing ficathons for a long time and am usually very happy with my gifts.
The most important thing for me in a fic is that the characters are well-written and recognizably themselves. Even when I don't like a character, I don't go in for character-bashing. If nothing else, if the rest of this letter is too much or my kinks don't fit yours, just concentrate on writing a story with everyone in character and good spelling and grammar and I will almost certainly love what you come up with.
I have an embarrassment squick, which makes humor kind of hit-or-miss sometimes. The kind of humor where someone does something embarrassing and the audience is laughing at them makes me uncomfortable. On the other hand, the kind of humor where the audience is laughing with the characters I really enjoy.

( Terminator: tSCC )

Snowflake 6: Top Ten x2
Jan. 27th, 2026 09:49 pmFirst off, the top ten Jonas Brothers collaborations from 2025! During the Greetings from Your Hometown Tour, the Jonas Brothers invited different artists/bands to every show. Each time it was a total surprise. The collaborations were a part of the larger theme of coming together as family and enjoying americana and also reminiscing about the 2000s. In some instances, the bands that played together hadn't even played live in years! I really loved seeing the Jonas Brothers pay homage to all these bands that came before them, and I also loved seeing them share the stage so humbly. Nearly all of my favorite bands were invited onto the tour!
( 10 vids under the cut )
I've also put together my top ten 5 Seconds of Summer songs of all time! They just dropped their new album (my top two songs are off that album) and they're going on tour this summer and I'm STOKED.
01. Evolve
^This song is saying something about gender and bisexuality (and/or pegging??) and partying culture and simple desires and I could go on - but it's also a BOP.
02. Telephone Busy
^This song is probably going to inspire my new username!
03. Easier (featuring Luke tied up and still singing without any explanation. And his makeup is SO hot)
04. Jet Black Heart (off of their second studio album back in 2015 but it still SENDS me)
05. More
06. Lover of Mine (The most romantic song they've written!)
07. Ghost of You
08. Moving Along (live version because of Calum's curls and Luke's nail polish)
09. Old Me
10. Ghost (the song they wrote after Liam Payne passed away)

I been thinking, do you miss me?

I'd like my trash TV paramedics to be a little less trashy!
Jan. 27th, 2026 07:13 pmI honestly never did finish the last season of 9-1-1 Lone Star because I didn't like it as much after the cast change, and the new stories weren't grabbing me. Then I changed streaming services, and couldn't be bothered to find it another way.
But I was looking at what was on Crave, since I have that right now, and saw that there was a new show called 9-1-1 Nashville, and thought I'd give it a whirl.
Boy, whatever new direction notes they got, were not my thing. It's all about some rich guy and his sons fighting with each other, and a scheming baby mamma, and we basically don't meet any of the other characters in the pilot. How on earth did they talk Chris O'Donnell into this nonsense? He can't be that hard up!
Plus the rescues were just very silly. And this is by standards of the 9-1-1 franchise, which is already extremely silly. This girl gets carried into the air by a kite! Not like a special kite, just a... regular one. A tornado is bearing down on a country music festival and they save it with the power of heart!
I vaguely considered watching the second half of the pilot before deciding there's got to be other trash shows I'd enjoy more. When is the new Stargate show happening?
I think if you're interested in foe-yay half brothers who want to fuck, you might be in business?

In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom
I've been in the Stargate Atlantis fandom since the beginning. I can't think of or come up with a better promo for my favorite OTP than the one done by Aja many moons ago
1. and then, randomly, there was a McShep Primer on your list
(LJ link https://bookshop.livejournal.com/958654.html)
Continuing on that theme...
2. Objectifying Rodney McKay (/David Hewlett): A Picspam
3. Objectifying John Sheppard (/Joe Flanigan): A Picspam
And if that's not enough. This pairing lends itself to crack AU's that leave me with a smile on my face.
4. The Epic Tale of Rodney & John, Two Girl Scout Cookies in Love
Is this a Canadian thing?
Jan. 27th, 2026 04:13 pmI want to try making this Melt the ICE hat, which of course knits in the round. I haven't done that, so I looked up a couple tutorials on how to knit with double pointed needles. They both said, "these will come in sets of five." The pattern says, "divide evenly on 4 DPNs" (which I assume implies the existence of a fifth needle to work with).
Every single one of the many sets of DPNs I got from Mom comes in a set of four.
Why?

Snowflake Challenge 2026 #13
Jan. 27th, 2026 08:08 pmChallenge #13
Talk about a community space you like. It doesn't need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it's even one that you've barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.
I feel like I find a way to talk about the indie web every other question when it comes to the Snowflake Challenge, but it really is my favorite way of experiencing fandom these days. Between the fandom webring, the fanfiction webring, and fanlistings, it's easier than ever to find the websites of fannish creators, who are able to present what they create any way they desire on their website. It encourages more long-form communication, such as emails and response posts, which, itself, encourages making interaction more meaningful. Each website being so personalized means that visiting each person's site is an entirely unique experience, as well, rather than feeling like visiting mildly-customizable templates.
Everybody should make their own website and put their fannish stuff on it NOW!!!

Challenge #14
In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom
I wasn't sure what to do with this at first, I talked about my love for the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films earlier during the snowflake challenge and I've made primers for other things I love for previous challenges, see Dead Boy Detectives and Sherlock & Daughter, so I decided to do something slightly different and try and convince Doctor Who fans to watch the Twelfth Doctor's run, specially his last season.
I've heard many Doctor Who fans say that they bounced right off of Twelve's first season, which I understand, because it was a little rough at first. Plus I known not everyone was a fan of Clara. So, they stopped watching or they skipped it. This is my way of trying to convince you to watch Twelve's last season (series 10).
Title: Doctor Who
Media: Television series
Approx length: 12 episodes plus one special, approx 13 hours (Optional: the two specials before this season "The Husbands of River Song" and "The Return of Doctor Mysterio", they are both fun, and if you like River Song you might want to check out "The Husbands of River Song" as it is River Song's send-off, at least for now).
What is it, in summary?: The Doctor finds himself acting as a Professor at St Luke's University, where he meets Bill, a cafeteria worker who sneaks in to listen to his lectures. All while the Doctor keeps a secret locked in a vault under the university. Bill is the main companion of the season, along with occasionally Nardole, a cyborg who is the Doctor's manservant/keeper.
What do you love about it?: First off, I love Bill, the Doctor and her have a great dynamic. She is impressed by the Doctor, but not in awe of him, and she's not afraid to ask questions, but rarely in a cruel way. At one point Bill pretends that he's her grandfather, which kind of fits. Bill's a lesbian, so there is no romantic tension, none of that, they're just friends.
Nardole is mostly there for comic relief. He is not impressed by the Doctor in the slightest, and he tries his best to keep the Doctor focused and following certain rules, with very little success.
Last, but not least, the third component to this season, that I love so much, is Missy, Missy, Missy! For those who don't know, Missy is the female incarnation of The Master. She was introduced near the end of Twelve's first season, but I don't think you necessarily need that context, you only need to know that this is the Master, and if you know Who at all you know something of their history. One sub-theme in this season is "Can the Master be rehabilitated?"
Content warnings: this kind of depends on the episode, but death, non-consensual body modification, injury, violence
Who do I ship?: First off, I kind of ship Doctor/Master a little bit in any form, but Twelve/Missy above all others. There is all this history and tension between them, but also this softness that neither one of them quite wants to admit to. There is also this yearning for a relationship from them both, but they can't quite trust each other enough to let it happen. There's a real tragedy about it. (Also, the chemistry between Capaldi and Gomez is great.)
I did like Clara, but I do wish that her time on the show had been a little shorter, or that Capaldi had agreed to do a fourth season, because I would have loved to have Bill for longer, and I wanted more time for Twelve and Missy's dynamic to develop, to see if they could build a better relationship between them.
I'm not saying every episode is great, some are much better than others, but I think it deserves so much more love than gets.
Lastly, let me persuade with some gifs:
Bill:
Twelve, Bill, and Nardole
Missy:
Twelve and Missy (like look at the chemistry!)

Anakin stumbles, his little face twisting into a scowl. His knuckles turn just a bit whiter around his lightsaber, and he stomps his foot, stiff and heavy, and begins the kata again.
Obi-Wan watches, hands folded in his sleeves, butterflies in his stomach. The boy, his padawan, stumbles again, falling to the ground with a growl. He goes to him, kneels down, gentle grasping Anakinβs shoulder. βAre you alright?β
Qui-Gon should be here, Obi-Wan thinks as Anakin scrapes away his tears with his sleeve and nods. He should be the one training Anakin. He should be there, ready with a cup of tea for Obi-Wan to turn to for advise. He shouldnβt be the ghost haunting them, the broken link in their lineage.
βIβm sorry,β he says, and blue eyes blink up at him. Iβm sorry Iβm not the master you deserve, he doesnβt say. Iβm sorry weβre learning everything on our own. βShall we try it together?β
A heavy sigh, head turning down, then a shrug. Smiling, Obi-Wan offers a hand. Anakin pulls himself to his feet. They settle into position beside each other. Twin blue sabers ignite, and together they step into the first motions of the kata.

Aurora volume 2 is available for pre-order
Jan. 27th, 2026 08:11 amAurora volume two is available for pre-order now, to be on shelves in bookstores by April 21! Learn about the volume and get pre-order links. I've pre-ordered my copy of volume two through my local comic shop. My copy of volume one is loaned to a friend.
This is, of course, the Andrews & McMeel edition of the fantasy webcomic by Red of Overly Sarcastic Productions. Read it online from the start for free. Essentially, this is a semi-medieval-like fantasy world with a rag-tag found-family party (with the internal dynamics of a superhero team) trying to save each other and their world from a sorceress who has figured out how to kill deities and is very into that for as-yet unrevealed reasons, plus the primordial power of the void given consciousness and accidentally released by one of our gang, plus being pursued by the ostensible forces of good who don't understand what's changed. But of course while the plot and bad guys are intriguing, the attraction for me is the heroes, and their motivations and damage and choices and powerful friendships.

Still Alive...
Jan. 26th, 2026 03:21 pmPost title is a reference to SCTV's old Perry Como: Still Alive sketch.
In short: I am late posting this week, but that was because I had all sorts of super "fun" doctor's stuff yesterday. Nothing serious, just all my annual medical check-ups end up being bunched together every year, and yesterday was the last of it. The best thing to come out of this round: I now have new computer glasses that make it much easier for me to write/work, so that's a major bonus. The next best thing is that I don't have to worry about any of this bullshit until next year. π
Here's my fandom stuff for the week:
Goals for next week: 1) Finish SOD PHs/treats, I'm thinking 2-3 more, maybe? 2) 3 Sentence fics! 3) Finish the extras for Heaven Official's Blessing. 4) More Deer and the Cauldron! 5) Pick up Dear Door again. 6) Start sizing up Candy Hearts treats and the current PH lists for other exchanges, to think about what I want to pick up next week.

The best thing to come out of this round: I now have new computer glasses that make it much easier for me to write/work, so that's a major bonus. The next best thing is that I don't have to worry about any of this bullshit until next year. π
Here's my fandom stuff for the week:
- Exchanges due in January/February (
fffx, Just The Tip flash, Fisting Flash,
candyheartsex,
seasonofdrabbles,
threesentenceficathon + mystery pinch-hits and treats + future sign-ups): I currently stand at 7/7, so I once again have that coveted "0 Assignments" marker on AO3. I finished my SOD assignment, 1 PH/treat-thing (I'd wanted to do 2), and did one day of craziness on
threesentenceficathon, which is lovely inspiration as always. My goals this week are to scour SOD for any treats I want to write and get those all written this week, and do another pass at
threesentenceficathon. 'Tis the season for short works! π Last year it took me a bit to get into the zone of really cutting my 3S fills to 3 sentences, so that's something I want to practice more this year: I feel like it's still a medium where I have a lot of work to master it, but I hope I'm slowly getting better. - Gifts and reveals:
Stuff I've received:- nobody else's hand will ever do - Endeavor/Hawks for Fisting Flash, super hot just the way fisting should be!
- Filled - Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan also for Fisting Flash, also super hot!
Stuff I wrote:- Take Five - The Endeavor/Hawks fic I wrote for Fisting Flash, also - shockingly - features fisting! π Also, I am very happy with my stupid pun in the title (and had to triple-check AO3 to make sure I hadn't seen it on someone else's fic first: not that I'm the first one to make the joke, but I did confirm that I hadn't seen any of the others who did first.
- An Eternal Mystery, Once as Now - A Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan (and Kunlun&/Shen Wei) PH I picked up for
amperslashexchange. I had fun writing this one, basically as a vent for all my own questions about whether Kunlun & Wei were actually fucking back in primordial times.
- Exchanges due in March/April: I've signed up for
caseficexchange! No clue what I'll be writing: last year I gamed specifically because I wasn't sure I was up to the challenge of finishing a case-fic on schedule; this year, I'm being more roulette-wheel about my assignment, so we'll see! There's nothing else that's cropped up in this timeframe so far that I'm likely to sign up for, but I am keeping my eyes on other exchanges for treats/PHs. - Heaven Official's Blessing by MXTX - I'm halfway through volume 8 and through the main storyline, into the extras. (Waiting for doctor's appointments is a GREAT way to read a ton fast, yo. I need to remember this for next year and have a mammoth cnovel at hand.) Overall, I really enjoyed the plot, but was less sold on the OTP. I just kinda felt like Xie Lian was more asexual than anything, and he liked Hua Cheng, sure, but he liked and wanted to save everyone, so I didn't really buy that Hua Cheng was that much of a stand-out to him. Also, I was iffy on Hua Cheng myself: like, he definitely was super-obsessed and had a good, long, convoluted history with Xie Lian, which was good, but I felt like Hua Cheng didn't really have that much personality beyond "in love with Xie Lian", which makes it hard for me to buy the ship long-term. (Like, what would they even talk about day-to-day for years?) And also it annoyed me that Hua Cheng wasn't really supportive of what Xie Lian wanted to do, and would just sort of sit on the sidelines and mock and/or actively hinder the people that Xie Lian was trying to save, and then would be controllingly overprotective of Xie Lian in ways that made Xie Lian's job harder. I probably could have overlooked this last bit if I was more sold on Xie Lian being SUPER into Hua Cheng too, but as is... They're okay, I guess? Also, I am sad we didn't get WAY more with Wind Master and Black Water. Wind Master didn't mourn Water Master's death at all, and we never really got anything about Black Water's reasons for just dumping Water Master in the capital afterwards. I wish we'd gotten way more on that and way less on Qi Rong. π However, I was impressed how entertained I was by Pei Ming at the end! I did not expect him to become a character I loved to semi-hate. Rain Master was also very cool, and I wish there were some extras about what her life was like, because she came off as the most alienly "divine" of all the gods in the book. Ah well, I definitely enjoyed it, just not as much as SVSSS for sure. But we'll see if some of the extras turn me around on some things.
- The Deer and the Cauldron by Louis Cha - I did make some progress on this and am still enjoying it, but I definitely sacrificed this one this week in favor of Heaven Official's Blessing, so I hope to pick this up more this week.
- Dear Door - I didn't do anything on this one last week; too preoccupied with the others.
