Challenge #13

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Also, feel free to entice engagement by giving us a preview of what your post covers.

I kind of did this in Challenge 12! I listed communities and websites that I'm grateful for.

One other community space I must mention is Best Bar. They know who they are and where we hang out. They've been very supportive of me the past few years and I'm very grateful for that.

But really: Dreamwidth is one of my internet homes, and there's all sorts of great communities here! It's about time I post my list of DW community recs again. It was last posted in 2024, after all. Some of these may be dormant now but I'll include them anyway because I loved the idea of the community. HERE WE GO!!

[community profile] nacramamo is National Craft-Making Month, and is gearing up now to kick off in October. The challenge is to work on some kind of craft every day for 31 days.

[community profile] 100words is a drabble community for fiction of all kinds. They post weekly challenges there.

[community profile] birdfeeding covers everything to do with birdfeeding, gardening for wildlife, and related topics.

[community profile] crowdfunding connects creators, patrons, and fans of cyberfunded creativity. Watch for the mid-month Creative Jam with a new theme each time.

[community profile] reddit_refugees offers resources for newcomers to Dreamwidth.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge runs in January, and is a way to celebrate fandom and meet interesting people on Dreamwidth. There's also [community profile] sunshine_challenge that runs in the summer, but I'm less familiar with that one.

Newly added to the list since I last posted this:

[community profile] allkindsofdolls is what it says on the tin. If you love dolls, check it out.

[community profile] ladiesbingo is a bingo challenge to make works focused on the relationship between women, whether gen, femslash, or familial. I'm currently having great fun trying to fill my bingo board!

[community profile] getyourwordsout is a writing challenge community where you can challenge yourself by wordcount of number of days written per month.

[community profile] 10trueloves is a writing challenge where you pair a character with ten others (IIRC, they don't have to be romantic pairings, but I'm not sure; check the comm for more info!)

[community profile] 1character is a writing challenge where you choose a character and prompt set, then write one line sentences to fill each prompt.

[community profile] everykindofcraft is what it says it is.

[community profile] inspiredby posts writing prompts monthly.

[community profile] makezines is for folks doing just that!

[community profile] threesentenceficathon is happening RIGHT NOW. People leave prompts, other write short fills of 3 sentences or longer.

The past list of community recs:

[community profile] communal_creators is a community for creative types! A mini-round for time pledges will be happening this spring. ANY kind of creativity is welcome! We have people writing (both fic and original), knitting, crochet, vidding, storyboarding, baking, making websites... if it's creative, you're welcome here.

[community profile] ffprompts posts monthly prompts for the Final Fantasy video game franchise. As a big fan of this series, I'd love to see more fills for the prompts happening!

[community profile] addme_fandom is a place to find friends who share your fannish obsessions.

[community profile] lyricaltitles is a bingo fest for fanfiction and original fiction centering around using songs for inspiration!

[community profile] fan_flashworks is a multifandom comm that posts one prompt for the week you use to write a short fanfic.

[community profile] c_ent is for Chinese Entertainment, and comes highly recommended by a few people.

[community profile] booknook posts a weekly Read-in-Progress check-in posts on Wednesdays.

[community profile] reference_library is a place to gather helpful links and share them, run by [personal profile] senmut.

[community profile] sweetandshort is a low-pressure community for creating small fanworks / original works each week.

[community profile] moodthemeinayear is what it says on the tin: the folks there are working on creating custom Dreamwidth mood themes over the course of a year.

[community profile] 1word1day posts a vocabulary word a day!

[community profile] finalfantasy - of course this would be here, if you know me. It's been very slow there lately, but I'd love to see more activity there.

[community profile] awesomeers - they make a post for each day of the week in which they challenge the members to comment with Just One Thing you did today that you're proud of accomplishing. Of course you are free to post more than one thing if you'd like! I love the idea of this community, though I haven't been very active in it lately. I hope to change that, if only to congratulate other people. Also: we celebrate all accomplishments there, so something as simple as "I got out of bed" would be acceptable!

[community profile] do_it - A community for posting to-do lists to make yourself accountable to others.

[community profile] readingtogether - has seen some activity the past few months. It's not like a normal book club where everyone reads the same thing - instead everyone reads their own thing and posts their progress.

[community profile] justcreate - has weekly check in posts where you can update everyone on your creative progress. All kinds of creativity are celebrated there, including fiber arts, drawing, writing, and more.

[community profile] get_knitted - is similar to [community profile] justcreate but posts daily check-ins. The folks there are GREAT about commenting on each other's comments. It's not just for knitting, either - there are people there who do scrapbooking and jigsaw puzzles.

[community profile] drawesome - has drawing challenges. I haven't taken part yet because I am a very sucky drawer, but I hope to start there in the future.

[community profile] genprompt_bingo - for the writers! They generate bingo cards of prompts, with all the prompts being gen. You can, of course, write a shippy fic from the prompt; it's just the prompts themselves aren't meant to be shippy. I'm currently working on a bingo for my last card, wish me luck!

[community profile] allbingo - They do all sorts of bingos, mostly writing-related but I think they've had some crafting ones as well. There's new challenges monthly!

[community profile] agonyaunt - critiques letters to advice columnists and the answers the letter writers get. I love this community because it is filled with smart people that I am learning a lot from. I'm a person of a certain age, and I know because of the timeframe I grew up in I have a lot of inherit biases and whatnot. I try to be above those biases, but sometimes I don't recognize them. Reading the other commenters to [community profile] agonyaunt helps me recognize those biases and better myself.

[community profile] holiday_wishes - active in the last two months of the year. People post their holiday wish lists there, and others fill them! I really was blessed one year - I got a bunch of cards, some yarn, some chocolate, and some other sweet treats. ♥ I couldn't do much in return but I did send back cards to everyone who sent me things.

[community profile] thisfinecrew is a social justice community focused on the USA. It doesn't get as much action as it once did but there are still informative posts there once in a while. [community profile] thissterlingcrew is the UK equivalent.

[community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth is a thing in which people post/interact more on Dreamwidth, to show love for the platform. ♥

[community profile] your_favourites is an icon making community that migrated over from LiveJournal. Looks like they have themes for members to create icons for, and then take a vote for best icon. I've joined it in hopes of finding more icons to add to my own journal.

[community profile] addme and [community profile] findingfriends are communities to help you find people to add to your Dreamwidth circles. The latter has a set questionnaire to use, and asks that if you use it elsewhere you include a link back to the community.

[community profile] journalsandplanners - what it says on the tin: for those who use a journal or planner to organize their lives. There's also [community profile] bujo for bullet journalers.

[community profile] anime_manga has seen some activity lately!

[community profile] fandomtrumpshate raises money for charity by creating fanworks.

[community profile] getting_started is a community with resources for those new to Dreamwidth.

[community profile] indie_games sometimes sees activity, and in the past, we did a play-together of A Short Hike which was really fun.

[community profile] common_nature is a photo community to share nature pics from your area, and has been active recently.

[community profile] followfriday recommends people/communities to follow each Friday.

[community profile] iconthat is another icon challenge community.

[community profile] signalboost is for getting the word out to others about people needing help in some way.

[community profile] twitter_refugees is for folks migrating to Dreamwidth from Twitter.

[community profile] bnha_fans is for fans of Boku no Hero Academia. It's modded by [personal profile] vriddy who I got to know during a [community profile] snowflake_challenge!

[community profile] comment_bingo is a bingo challenge community for commenting on all those fanfics you read.

[community profile] womansplace is a community that holds dual purpose: 1) Celebrate characters who identify as women or who are aligned with womanhood in transformative fan works. Events include community recs, a prompt fest, and a vid exchange. 2) Raise funds via a vid auction

[community profile] kittens_and_spitefic's goal is to prompt fan content by acting like a total troll and pretending to bash what you want to see up one side and down the other. Commenters then engage with the supposed "troll" by spamming them with cat (and other animal) macros and/or content that caters to everything the original poster professes to hate.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd I think that's it! If there's any interesting communities you know about that I've missed, feel free to drop them in the comments! And also feel free to share this post, I'll make it public so you can pass it around.

Last night there was a debate with the three leading Democratic candidates in the primary for Senator Dick Durbin's seat (who has held this seat since 1997 and can also be something of weenie and Zach Woods describes him well.) Here's a recording if anyone is interested in watching:

Just a reminder that election day in Illinois is March 17! The first day of early voting varies by county but you can find that information here.

12 Week Year WAM Week 05

andersenmom: KwangHaeng with snear and hat over his eyes, predebut (Days Like These)
[personal profile] andersenmom
Weekly Score: 67.8 (40/59)

(I'm improving! wahoo!)

Goal 1: Increase my spirituality. 72% (18/25)

Review: Getting better at this. I figure I'll be writing a lot this week, as I have a lot to process. I'm not sure how it's all going to work, but I'll do my best.

Goal 2: Fit better in my clothes / feel better in my body. 58% (15/26)

Review: I'm still working on this, but I have plans, and I think those will work out. I'm having the worst time with actually drinking, which I shouldn't because my skin is practically flaking off, it's so dry (cold!). Stretching is harder than I expected, but still going to happen.

Goal 3: Whittle down my to-do list. 88% (7/8)

Review: This is the only one I didn't improve on, and I'll work to fix that, too. For the most part, though, I'm pretty happy with what I did.

Intentions for the future: G1: I'm going to focus on actually getting my journal written in. Things are going, and I need to process them. If I can make myself write about them. G2: I'm still working on recording everything - that's where a lot of the problem is - and on walking. I'm going to miss a couple of days because of appointments in the morning. And I have some extra stretches for my elbow, and I'm excited to try them out.

Lie down in the snow with ten minutes to midnight.
Entrust your weight to the implication of ground.
The layer of ice over the snow will not betray you.
Your presence hasn't given way, left a single dent.

No one will disturb your grave at this hour.
The clouds will blanket the stars over your eyes.
The veins of the trees will be the only spectacle hanging above.
State of the world: tabula rasa.

Take a picture to remember you were alive.
The scant traces of you will melt, come daylight.
The scant traces of you will disappear, come next snow.
The scant traces of you were never even there, come undone.

Start anew, ashes of you scattered,
memories victim to the fire lit up to keep yourself warm.
With you, with them, and everyone else,
bury it all in this snowstorm.

I updated my Mp3tag software last night and noticed something interesting in the licensing agreement:

Mp3tag
cannot be used in a military domain or in a similar domain (Weapon creation, armament, etc.).

And now I'm really curious if this is common in open source software, best practice for someone on the team, or if the military has a particular use for software to edit metadata on audio files.

Kind of reminds me of the "don't use this for AI training" statement at the beginning of an audiobook I listened to last year. The 21st century sure comes with a lot of interesting disclaimers.

Talk about a community space you like

Well, there's more than one of those.

First to mind is SGA_Saturday A lot of Stargate Atlantis communities have fallen by the wayside as the years have passed. This community, with its monthly prompts has kept the light burning.

Whatif_au This is a fun, mulitfandom community. I suspect it's light touch and dash of charm has a lot to do with it's mod and creator [personal profile] brumeier. *Great work, hon*

This site Unconventionalcourtship is an annual, multifandom challenge that was made for my heart.

Folks! The last time I worked on this was April of 2024. I kept putting it off because I was too busy playing the game. But I've been toying around with my Neocities site again, and that made me want to get back to this.

This is incredibly long because I've faithfully transcribed ALL the dialogue that happens during this part of the game (with the exception of a mini-game and some dialogue choices; I only have the answer for one choice, not both. I'll fix that later.) Get a drink and something yummy, then get cozy because you'll be reading a while.

Recap from last time! SPOILERS for ShadowbringersDuring our last recap, Vauthry had sicced his sin eaters on Lakeland. The battle was fierce and there were quite a few casualties. The Scions regroup in the Crystarium’s Ocular to discuss future plans, all in agreement not to give up the fight.

Alphinaud has had no luck finding the Lightwarden of Kholusia, while Alisaie has heard a few rumors about Amh Araeng’s Lightwarden but dare not investigate on her own. Still, Alisaie’s information is not concrete, leading Minfilia to suggest traveling to Nabaath Araeng to call back the original Minfilia, as her powers would allow the Scions to easily find the remaining Lightwardens.

Thancred is dead set against this course of action, but Minfilia is persistent.

Sensing your concern, Minfilia reaffirms her commitment to her chosen course of action, and asks that you trust her judgment with an earnestness worthy of her namesake. She then departs—presumably to make her preparations before joining Thancred at the gates.

After a short wait, Minfilia arrives at the appointed place and declares her readiness to depart. But before proceeding, you give her one last opportunity to abandon her chosen course. Her emphatic reply leaves little room for argument, however, so the group turns its attention to the question of how best to pass through Amh Araeng unnoticed. At Alisaie’s suggestion, you decide to split up—sending her, Alphinaud, and Y’shtola to the east to distract the Eulmoran Army while the rest of you take the western route to Nabaath Araeng.

As you near the gate to Amh Araeng, you realize you are not the only one contemplating the ordeals that may lie ahead. Hearing Thancred’s quiet plea for assistance in protecting Minfilia, his trepidation could not be more obvious.

You speak with Hardyss, who grants you passage through the gate—perhaps against her better judgment.

Fandom: Naruto

Characters/Ships: HashiMada

Important Themes/Tags: Crossover/Fandom Fusions with Witch Hat Atelier, Spoilers for Witch Hat Atelier chapter 85, Unhappy Ending, Tragedy

Description: In the world before the Pact, where witch clans wage atrocious wars against each other, Hashirama and Madara meet and decide to pursue the dream of creating a peaceful nation of witches all living in harmony. Hashirama, initiated through rituals of his clan, is the host of a Silverwood tree, and he uses its powers to accomplish his goals. The process of uniting all witches and initiating arrangements for the Pact gets underway, and Madara learns what the consequences of hosting a Silverwood tree are and correctly infers what will happen once the processes is finished and everyone is living peacefully. So he decides to betray Hashirama and their efforts, declaring the creation of a rebel group called the “Brimmed Caps”, to keep Hashirama in a state of constant anguish but at least alive.

A/N: WHA chapter 85 and beyond was released just when I had gotten into HashiMada (about a decade after leaving the Naruto fandom… I dunno why that ship was never on my radar back then, when initially stumbling upon it after falling down a AO3 rabbit hole literally made me go, “Oh yeah, I remember Hashirama and Madara, with their Romeo-and-Juliet-esque bromance”…) and it all just slotted together like puzzle pieces in my mind before I could blink. Or at least the premise did, I don’t think I could flesh it out enough to really do the story justice.

so no more sad events right now, as things have been peacefully lately. i have been working on my brother’s notebooks front pages for his school notebooks, and my drawing for my queen megan’s birthday. AND KIIIKIII’S COMEBACK IS IN TWO DAYS :D. i have also started driving lessons, and ngl 0/10, specially due to my teacher, as she is annoying, always jokes around and goes off topic way too much. though ngl, i stopped taking it seriously at some point, and i did distracted myself for a fair chunk of it. and now i dont understand anything and i need to study. yaaaayyy :D. i go back to school in 5 days, im a bit nervous as is a new school, worse, new PRIVATE school (i come from a private school, and for some reason, every private schooler (read: all the students of 5 specific schools) knows every private schooler) and i dont want those people to know about me AT ALL. i dont think it’ll cause a good impression that those people know that i havent talked with any of my classmates since 7th grade, im generally considered “innocent and pure”, and that im autistic. cause yeah i took the bad decision to tell some friends when our friendship was falling apart and ive been infantalized by a fair chunk of my classmates since then. yaaayyyy (man i was born in the wrong country why wasnt born anywhere else where people arent a bunch of gossipy idiots 😭).

also had a small attack of imposter syndrome over my autism cause despite the fact im low masking i generally function well socially(read: i can run errands and manage small talk, even if i learned the latter by observing people), and anyway most of the discourse about autism in women is all about “but women often go undiagnosed due to masking!!!”, which i can get why it happens and i known autistic women who do go through that, but thats not my situation AT ALL (more on the contrary really, when my autistic traits started to really affect me i went through an edgy “not like other girls” phase), but is fine now :). thank you random person on r/autism who happened to have the same flavor of autism as me 🙏 (and anyway if any of u is an autist who went by well during most years cause everyone thought your traits were just bc you were gifted and treated kindly because you were smart and well-behaved, instead of trying to blend in you developed a weird superiority complex and you barely mask and feel alienated by other people’s experiences cause you dont feel like you suffered enough to be autistic, you are not alone pookie 🙏)

final rambling note, chainsaw man reze arc wasn’t nominated in the oscars for best animated film, but zootopia 2 and elio were. i lost my faith in humanity

media reviews as always lol, spoilers for:
- paranoia agent (2004) (ep1-ep4)
- tokyo gore police (2008) (the review will contain mentions of blood, violence, and gore)
- cosmic princess kaguya! (2025)

Some things that I have had stashed away for a little while:

1. [personal profile] sovay very kindly sent me a copy of Exit Through the Fireplace by Kate Dunn, which was waiting for me at the new house when I got here. It is about repertory theatre with lots of accounts on every aspect from actors and others involved, including a lot of people I have watched in old telly, so I enjoyed it a lot.

But having only recently before tried to make a post explaining what I loved about Terence Rattigan's plays, including floundering about trying to say how effective his dialogue is, I was v pleased to find this quote:

John Moffatt: (On being in rep, and the difficulty of remembering the lines, doing a new play every week): "You got to know who the good writers were. With Rattigan you barely had to learn it at all, even after just blocking it you almost knew it because it is so beautifully written. The only way to reply to something that has just been said is what he's written."

2. Talking of people being kind, [personal profile] swordznsorcery wrote me a lovely Sapphire & Steel story with a new Element and a stealth crossover very RTMI here, and if you also like S&S, I recommend taking a look, as it's great! <3

3. The book I was reading introduced me to the utterly untrue but very S&S like urban myth/ghost story of the Zanetti Train. Sounds like an Assignment to me, or a film I would watch, anyway. (It seems to have been taken from a Ukrainian work of fiction, most likely - certainly not one detail of it has any truth in it).

4. Making personalised bingo cards proved to be exactly in my wheelhouse right now, so I had fun with that. If anyone missed it the other day and would like one, feel free to still ask! (Here or there, whatever).

5. Random AO3 tag found while wrangling that is currently amusing me: It is literally just Twelfth Night but with Moomins.

Otherwise still slowly progressing and all that etc etc etc.

1. My life would be better if the weather would pick a temperature and stay there and stop flopping around every few days. I have lost most of the month on the couch with migraines.

2. Speaking of weather, we're well prepared for the incoming ice storm including coordinating with friends and family for warm places to be if someone loses power.

3. As someone in the far reaches of the alphabet I am so tired of getting ads everywhere for Valentine's day lingerie or even bra sales. The number of times I've seen "extended sizes" advertised, clicked through, and been disappointed because they mean they go to a G cup ... innumerable. Also companies need to stop with small/med/large sizing in general. Band and cup size can be vastly different.

3b. If you have a rec for a company with actual extended sizing, I usually wear a 30JJ in Panache. Measurements are 31 inch underbust, 45 in overbust in a bra, and 47 in overbust naked. I am having bra fit issues at the moment and am 80% certain that I'm going to have to go custom which is a totally different set of problems.

Post-editing round "pacing check"

Jan. 24th, 2026 01:12 pm
vriddy: whatever (whatever hawks)
[personal profile] vriddy

As expected the pacing check didn't really do anything as a pacing check lolsob. The new bits were super fun and the old bits kinda felt draggy. However I have Thoughts regardless! Also I waited to have a 4h block of time to read but tat wasn't enough orz I think it took over a little 5h to reread overall, for 56k words - just noting this down as a reminder for my future self.

I wanted to just "jot down a few notes" but I'm gonna have to use headers again. Whoops. This got long.

Waiting to have a lot of time to do writerly stuff = no

Also: as much as doing a full reread at once appeals, postponing over and over until such a magical block of time manifests isn't reasonable. This is kinda funny to relearn because this used to be a source for writing block for me back in my early writing days (wayyy back). I had to wait until I had a Big Chunk Of Free Time for focus reasons. Things have gotten a lot happier for me since I learnt how to write in 30 minutes (or sometimes 15 minutes!) blocks, and also that doesn't preclude the occasional delightful Big Chunk Of Writerly Time from happening either.

Full reread good for some things, even if not for pacing exactly

Otherwise, the full reread was good to see how the changes hold together. While a rewritten scene toward the end does need a bit more air, the first half where I did the bulk of the work imo flow super well. While I can see the seams where I attached the old to the new, it's mostly because I remember the old version(s). I'm just really really enjoying what the story is turning into. I was a bit worried because when reworking stuff, you can also see what it no longer is and no longer says, but whatever it is now, it sure is something I like :D The chapter that many beta-readers said felt too long, and which is now nearly twice as long, didn't drag at all for me. It's hard to tell if it's because I care too much already about these characters, or because a lot of was rewritten and therefore falsely feels more fresh to my brain, but that's what valiant beta-readers will help me find out soon enough :D

How many drafts is enough drafts?

writing writing editing blah blah happy :D )

What next?

I have put off making this post, but I'm writing it now.
Had to unpublish Bloodhunt Academy from the Zon. )

Writing Bloodhunt Academy was an achievement for me, considering I wondered whether I could ever read or write again at some point before it. I can't just let it languish. I've started cutting the chapters into smaller chunks and uploading it to Royal Road (link!). It was not meant to be a web serial so I don't know, but I'm going to just continue expanding it instead of making Book Two separate. For the people who bought the book from the Zon upon release, and the ARC readers who indicated they wanted to read Book Two, I'm planning to send a free e-copy of the completed expanded version. If you bought the book, DM me with the email you'd like me to send it to and I'll save it on my ARC reader spreadsheet.

A consequence of the indie author dream fizzling out is that I'm having to terrify myself trying to figure out ways to have hope for the future. Trying to believe I won't live and die in this house. I'm having to face the prospect of jobsearching again and trying to stave off the depression that rises whenever I do.

My friend Venky sent me a job posting he saw that he thought I'd be interested in, and he was right. I applied for it, but the fact that I actually want this job, as opposed to thinking that something or the other will have to do, has made the tenterhooks another kind of torture. The employer responded to my application email saying they will get back to candidates within a certain timeframe. I waited for double of that timeframe to pass, with no word from the employer, before sending my followup email a few days ago, asking them for the status of my application. I hate how the process has played havoc with my mental health throughout. I'd probably go insane if I didn't have the tarot. Although I use tarot predictively, I don't usually do timing readings, because my success with them has been mixed. But not knowing how long I should wait or whether I was going to be ghosted entirely for a job I actually want was kind of destroying me, so I did a timing reading. I used one of my Thoth decks, the Parrott Tarot, because the Thoth system is less scenic and more symbolic which works better for timing.

Based on my reading, I'm assuming I'll hear from them next week. If next week passes by and I don't hear from them I'm going to stop waiting. The thought of not getting this job terrifies me. The thought of what to do if I have to stop waiting, give it up, find some other path somehow, terrifies me. I'm assuming I'll hear from them next week and, according to a predictive tarot reading I did that reassures me, I'm assuming I'll get the job.
