Snowflake #3: Changing opinions
Jan. 5th, 2025 10:40 pmThe beginning of my year is shaping up to be a time to catch up on tv shows that I have missed, and new ones. I watched both seasons of Arcane -- excellent, though very high octane. The visual storytelling is fantastic. I also finally started What We Do in the Shadows (I wanted something completely different), but today I saw a glowing review for a new Finnish show, Queen of Fucking Everything. It's a black comedy about a high-achieving woman who out of the blue has to go into foreclosure and ends up embroiled in a criminal scheme to keep up appearances. I'm halfway through now. The cast is fabulous and it really is contemporary Finnish dramedy at its best.
Here's today's snowflake:

Challenge #3
In your own space, talk about a fannish opinion you hold that has changed over time.
I racked my brain trying to think of a deeper answer to the question, but I'm going to go with a frivolous one.
I used to be of the firm opinion that cum -- as opposed to come -- is a word that needs to be avoided at all costs, and the sight of it merits nothing but a forceful backbutton. That's not an uncommon opinion, but I do wonder where it comes from -- is it association with a different breed of porn? All I know is that I disliked it, considered it gauche, childish, embarrassing.
Over the past couple of years, however, I've been using it a lot more during chats with a friend who favors its, and because of the regularity with which the word comes up in our particular conversation, I have now become completely acclimated to it. It no longer makes me cringe, and in fact, come has come to be the silly one for me. Writing fic, I now find myself having to purposefully use the latter, because it is much more accepted in the fandom circles I know. I know cum is enough to be a DNW for some, and I don't want to cause offense!
There are a few other words I've had this same happen with, mainly genital-related as well, but this is the big one.
