How do I get an estimate for my upholstery project?
The best way to get a quote is to submit your project information in our quote request form. Remember to provide pictures and details about your project so we can get you an accurate quote. Primarily we need to know the basic dimensions of the project piece, what type of material you might want to use (leather, fabric, etc), and any style ideas such as skirts, buttons, feather inserts, tufting, etc. We’ll usually respond within one business day.
Do you provide on-site consultations?
Yes, we do provide on-site consultations. We have some designers on staff that can look at your space and your ideas and help bring that idea to life. Give us a call at (801) 984-2030 to speak with a designer and schedule a consult.
Should I reupholster or replace my sofa?
There are a lot of variables that help determine this. Generally, reupholstering is cheaper than building a new, similar piece (assuming high quality furniture). For “throw-away” furniture, replacing it will almost always be cheaper because they tend to be built to lower quality standards in low-cost countries.
The frame is the most important factor here. If the frame is heavy and well-built, that is a good sign it is worth reupholstering. If the piece has sentimental or monetary value, reupholstering is also a good idea. You may also consider how that particular piece of furniture fits in your home, both size and style wise. When we build or reupholster something, we want it to last at least 15 years so ask yourself if you’ll still want this around 15 years from now.
Can we replace foam and fix problems during reupholstery?
Yes, we can replace any old foam during this process. We offer a few different densities of High-Resilience foam. This foam is the best quality we can find and should last a decade or more depending of course on how heavily it is used.
We can also repair any problems we find with the springs or frame during this process. When we return your furniture to you, it should be better than new.
How long does this process take?
The exact timing depends on many variables such as the scope of the project, how busy we are, and availability of materials (mostly fabric). Call for specific timing. In general though, 8-10 weeks for a new sofa is typical, as is 6-8 weeks for reupholstery.
How does this process work?
The process is pretty straightforward, but, as with anything custom, there are a lot of questions to be answered. See this link for more details.
Do you also build new furniture?
Yes, unlike typical upholsterers, we design and build furniture from scratch. Once we’ve determined the details of your project, we build each frame right on site. That means that we control the timing and the quality of each piece of furniture we create. We can build so many different products such as sofas, love seats, sectionals, chairs, dining chairs, upholstered beds, benches, and more. We also make pillows, cushions, and other soft items.
Can I have something built in a custom size and shape?
Absolutely. That is one of the primary reasons people come to us. It may, for example, be hard to find a sofa exactly 85.5″ long that is a little deeper in a burgundy velvet. Since we build everything from scratch, you can build these to whatever size you need and we have access to millions of different fabrics, leathers, and vinyls.
We also design furniture to fit in odd spaces such as rooms with an angled, rather than square, wall.
What kind of frames do you use?
We use only kiln-dried hardwoods on every frame that we build. This helps us ensure that every frame we build is built to the most exacting standards. We stand behind our work and warranty every frame (and whatever suspension system, springs or elastic) for 20 years.
Many furniture makers use “engineered hardwoods” like plywood or particle board, that don’t last as long, are more flexible, and absorb water/humidity at a higher rate.
We’ll put our frames up against the best in the world and our warranty is our way of showing our confidence in everything we build.
Do you sell fabric and leather?
Yes, if you have a project and just need some good quality fabric or leather, let us know. We can either source one that you’ve already found, or we can help you find one. Best of all, it will ship directly to you. See this list of current vendors that we carry.
Do you work with leather?
Yes, we do. Leather is a great option for a breathable, natural material that lasts a very long time. That said, it is also one of the most expensive options. We have hundreds of top-grain leathers to choose from, including more budget friendly “corrected and protected” hides all the way up to the top-of-the-line full-aniline leathers.
Can I bring my own fabric?
Yes, you can. If you already have your own fabric, just let us know. Most customers will save money by purchasing fabric through Sofa Biz for two reasons.
1: When we perform the labor on your project, we pass along fabrics at our cost.
2: We can usually secure more affordable fabric than you can find at a store or through a designer. We have over 10,000 physical samples that you can check out and take home and access to millions of other samples online.
What are the best performance fabrics?
That is a loaded question. Fabric performance can be measured by cleanability, durability, color fastness, holding shape, etc.
Every project has different demands and a well trained fabric specialist can help you determine the best material for your project. Whether that be UV resistant acrylics for furniture with high exposure to sunlight, tighter woven fabrics to resist spills, pet claws, velvets to repel liquid stains and make cleaning easier, vinyls to waterproof a dining chair, etc.
We curate our selection of fabrics so they are all designed to last for 15-20 years. Come see us and we can help you with your specific needs.
Do I need an appointment to visit?
We prefer that you do schedule some time with us so that we can ensure we have somebody available to help you. We do a lot of on-site consultations and as such, we aren’t always in the showroom. Generally speaking, appointments are available between 10 and 5 Monday through Friday. The appointments don’t commit you to a certain time, they just help us plan our staffing better so we can support you.
Are there things you don’t build or reupholster?
Yes. Recliners are a lot more involved and require a much greater time commitment on our part. We are typically too busy to be able to work on recliners. Most upholsterers whom we know are in a similar situation. If you insist on reupholstering a recliner we can make some recommendations, but be prepared to pay extra for it.
We also don’t generally work on auto, marine, RV, office chairs, and slip covers. We do have some amazing partners that c=do this work though so if you need one of these done, we’re happy to recommend some other amazing companies.
How much fabric do I need for my project?
There are a lot of variables at play here such as pattern, size of the furniture piece, direction the fabric was milled, etc. In general, here are some common references:
Arm Chair: 8-10 yards
7 foot sofa: 16 yards
dining chair: 0.5 yards (seat only), 1.5 yards (seat + back)
Do you offer delivery and installation services?
Yes, we pick-up and deliver almost anywhere in the Northern Utah area. For customers outside that area, we’ll provide an estimated freight quote. Just let us know up front where it is going and we’ll get that estimate for you. Customers are also welcome to pick up/drop off items directly at our shop.
Where is your shop, what areas do you serve?
Our shop is located right alongside I-15 in Midvale, Utah. You’ll frequently see our Sofa Biz blue delivery truck parked alongside the freeway.
We primarily serve northern Utah within a 75 mile radius of our shop, but we’ve built and delivered furniture to many other states and countries to include: Canada, Mexico, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Delaware, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Oregon, and California.
How can I trust your own marketing about your quality?
Of course we love the quality of our work, who wouldn’t say that? We encourage you to go out and look at our Google reviews. You may notice that those reviews come from real, local customers, not the kind that companies pay to generate fake reviews. Word-of-mouth is our primary source of referrals and we intend to keep it that way by turning every client into an advocate and cheerleader.
Customers are always welcome to come tour our facility, see the process, touch the materials, and then decide for themselves if we really are as good as we claim to be.
