In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

If you're in the UK or Europe, please pay attention to your local heatwave health warnings and stay hydrated and safe.

In the UK, the Prime Minister Merry-Go Around spins yet again, leading us to look toward our seventh Prime Minister in ten years (We've had only five new Doctor Who's in that time, and that's only so large because of the Fugitive Doctor and 14 popping in for the Specials), as a popular, but thoroughly untested candidate seeks to replace but deeply unpopular (and in some areas for good reason) incumbent who did achieve SOME things at least, if dropping the ball on many others. Whether it is significant that those are the ten years since the Brexit Referendum I leave to political analysts, but at this point I want to vote for Larry the Downing Street cat, who has served longer than the lot of them put together, has showed up for work every day, never broke COVID rules, and has never been involved in any sort of a sex/bribery scandal.. well, not yet.

And yet somehow, looking at the state of the US at the moment, with the mire surrounding (and indeed filling) the Reflecting Pool becoming perhaps a too perfect metaphor for larger scale issues.

The World Cup continues and, apparently, the British and Australian teams are introducing the American soccer fanbase to the world of the truly derogatory mass chant with some... shall we say "choice rhymes" regarding a certain Mr Trump.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day got a new trailer

Laika's new movie, Wildwoods, got a trailer, showing they have lost none of their charm and skill as stop motion animators

Some apparently VERY impressive First footage from "Dynamic Duo", the 2028 movie about Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, debuted at Annenncy Film Festival, though none has leaked. :( What we know of the plot is also a little different from what was expected

Today, I put my VHS copy of It! The Terror from Beyond Space in with with the laundry, set to speed wash. I have no idea how a B-movie ended up in my dirties. This is basically where I've been at lately.

This film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras, Suboptimist, was an attempt to capture the flavor of my current state. Thankfully, going out and taking pictures and having ready-to-go Superia Xtra 400-ass JPGs helps me get out of that state and into a brighter one where I like to edit RAW photos that didn't pan out with my recipe, mostly stuff indoors. I have to give most of the credit to the base film simulation though, Classic Negative. Shout out to color scientists. And shout out to food bloggers, I totally get why they ramble before getting to the recipe. I've got a lot of stuff to say! And you know what, look at the pictures I took first too.

I knew this would happen, but I just stumbled across one more Steam demo I want to showcase after posting my big demo roundup the other day.

The game is called Wind Runners, and it's a 2D action roguelike / bullet hell / shoot 'em up in which you fly a lil plane around and shoot dudes who are shooting at you. There are a million games I could compare it to—Luftrausers comes to mind—but it feels like a good one of those.

It mainly stood out to me with its really pretty mix of gorgeous 2D pixel art and low-poly 3D. The opening stages are played in this extremely vibrant world of blue skies, green hills, blue waters, and best of all for me, gigantic clouds. Your ship creates little waves of spray when you get too close to the water and turn away from it, which is a lovely little touch.

There's also a bangin' drum & bass soundtrack, which I always love, and helps you lock the fuck in.

But obviously what got me to write about it is that it feels great to play. The mechanical gist is that you fly around based on where you point your mouse cursor, you have brakes and a boost, a main gun, and two secondary weapons to start with. Your secondaries charge as you damage enemies, and your main runs out of juice and needs to recharge after a time, which forces you in to this really fun back and forth of switching between your weapons. Keeps you on your toes along with everything else happening on screen.

Like any good roguelike, you get upgrades between missions that tie into and augment your existing abilities. One run, I got a laser that fired behind me whenever I hit my boost, which resulted in some kills that made me feel extremely cool.

Anyway, this seems like a cool game and it really clicked with me! Looks like it'll be out in Early Access in September.

Ok... of the castle shells I've downloaded so far, "Castle Shell Challenge 2" by lordcloss76 meets a lot of my personal standards for house shells. I'm fine with using moveobjects and a bajillion (totally legitimately acquired) packs on my own terms, but I like a relatively "clean slate" if I want to move into a home.

  • no (or minimal) moveobjects cheat
  • not overloaded with debug scenery
  • uses as few packs as possible (in this case Castle Estate Kit)

It is, admittedly, a bit small for a "castle" (fits on a 30x20 lot), but that at least gives room for building on, or makes it easier to fit into a world with limited lots.

I like Maxis' own "grand castle estate" shell fine... except for the fact it has no predefined rooms. Even unfurnished, it's currently outside of this save file's budget. Lilsimsie's wedding venue version of it is nice, and easy enough to convert into a house, but is like... over 650k simoleons furnished. For the record, my wealthiest sims at the moment are sitting at like... 75k simoleons.

I tried looking for a good wood lodge shell for Moonwood Mill (Werewolves pack world) also, but the only one I found that met my third criterion failed my first and second criteria.

The thing about moveobjects spam is that it makes it hard to know if a sim can actually, uh... access things.

mystery toys as childhood joy ...

wish concept of mystery box / mystery bag toys just did not exist .

momentary surprise over " rare item " is not worth all of package waste , money waste , and duplicate toys that will collect dust or go straight to landfill .

for every person who is genuine and responsible in engagement of mystery toys , there will be 5 more who try to make these things " viral trend " or collect every single one , and then harder for people who would genuinely appreciate to find .

people unfortunately do this with non-mystery toys too , but mystery toys add another seriously awful element - if everything is hidden , then need to spend immense amounts of money to even have chance at find favourite outcome .

if engagement in these trends is " for childhood fun and whimsy " like some claim , why not look at actual modes of childhood play ?

put some toys in sandbox , even if this is just small bowl , and dig out again . ask someone trusted to hide toys around room . play shell game with really small ones . if really want this idea of unbox experience , reuse bags and boxes that already have around house to put toys back into - boxes can be rocket ships , adoption shelters , anything .

could even just change out display of toys , so arrangement feel new again .

Then send me a picture, won't you?

this past winter, my favorite podcast network, ranged touch, released a free bonus episode for their podcast about genre fiction. the episode is about a christmas-themed murder mystery hallmark movie, but it goes off the rails after they discover a hilarious string of projects on a contributor’s imdb page. it’s one of my favorite podcast episodes because of its chaos, but what stuck with me about it was something one of the hosts said in response to their unexpected deep dive: “the world is so big”

that’s been such a comfort to me since then. the world is so big. there are huge expanses of information i haven’t learned. there are too many people in the world to meet, or even imagine meeting. the history of human creativity spreads endlessly in all directions. there is expertise everywhere, depth in everything, nuance in every possible topic, limitless complexity to all people.

whenever my world feels too small, too constrained by the petty details of my current heartbreak or my past trauma, too boxed in by an anxiety i can’t seem to shake or an ocd compulsion i can’t get out of, i remember: it is always an option to turn to the hugeness of the world and make my own life a little bigger.

i have a tendency to shrink my world down to make it easier to manage. i focus intensely on my desire for one (unattainable) person, or i put off things i want to do out of fear of doing them wrong. i have a history of playing it safe. other people’s lives seemed to go off on so many tangents, and i resented myself for not being able to compare. im learning not to do that anymore—both the resentment and the habit of barricading my life in one small, predictable room.

my life is bigger now. ive become part of an online friend group that’s everything ive been dreaming of since i was a teenager trying to find a digital home. i discovered that there’s a covid-safe group in my area, so ive been able to safely meet new people for the first time since the pandemic began. ive let myself be influenced by passions of my new friends, and ive discovered so many new things as a result.

it’s a struggle, learning to let my life take a more complex shape.

but the world is so big. and my life is growing to meet it.

Yea this about sums it up my experiences with popular tumblr users lmao.

lots of supposedly left-wing people online who seem to think that being queer and corny and being an outright bigot are equal crimes

"remember the 2010s when gay 20-somethings were SO embarrassing and cringe online? thank god we're all jaded irony-poisoned cynics now. SO much better"

It's exhausting!

There's this thing that happens when you're autistic and have experienced a lot of abuse by peers from a young age. People tell you to open up and stop being scared in order to heal, but you constantly receive messages from the world around you that it's not safe to be earnest, it's not safe to speak up, that people will give you weird looks and talk about how stupid and gross you are if you're enthusiastic about the wrong things, or enthusiastic in the wrong way. You retreated from the real world to the internet to find 'your people', but seeing the harassment online made you clam up more. (Did anyone else give up on creative writing as a kid because they were terrified they 'deserved' to be sporked?) The tone and dressing of the harassment changed, over the years, but the harassment never went away. Even when it never targeted you, you felt like maybe you deserved to die for being annoying. And the best way to not be annoying is to make yourself small. Don't speak up, don't have any opinions. Earnestness is annoying. Enthusiasm is annoying. Cynicism and mockery make you funny and cool to your peers, but if you do it wrong you'll get mocked in turn, and you always do things wrong. And as an autistic person, doing what comes naturally to you is always annoying - even other autistic people will tell you this. "I learned to be normal, why can't you?"

I don't think this is an autism-exclusive experience, for what it's worth. Autism is just one of the factors that can contribute to having the experience.

Blurb: BANG! A single bullet rings out in the dark city. But as one life ends, the story is just getting started... Sissel wakes up as a ghost and realises he has lost his memory along with his life. “Who am I? Who killed me? And why?” With only a few hours until sunrise — and oblivion — to uncover these answers, Sissel must solve the mystery of his own murder, starting with the detective who may have witnessed the crime... Using the powers of the dead, you can possess and manipulate objects and even rewind time as you work to solve brainteasing puzzles in a story chock-full of quirky humour and charming characters.

Just like cake, there are many flavors of geek fandom - and I love them all.

Granted, I love some more than others:

Image

(By Chatter Cakes)

NO LIE.

I about fell over when I found not only a cake of my favorite video game character of all time - I found an AMAZING cake of him:

Image

(By Oakleaf Cakes)

[Kermit flail] SONGBIRD!!

Songbird here is a whopping three feet tall, and was made for Irrational Games. And I love him. You can check out the amazing build photos here.

Who else loves Avatar? And I don't mean the blue guys:

I let the anime style scare me off of The Last Airbender for far too long, but it only took a single episode last year to get me hooked. And the sequel series, Legend of Korra? AMAZEBALLS.

Shout out to all the real anime geeks out there:

Image

(By rub-a-duckie)

I can spot Naruto, but the rest of your cosplay always keeps me guessing. :D

Here's a fun mash-up of two shows John and I love:

Ponies and Supernatural!

Would you look at that "salt" circle? And a bucket of blood has never been cuter. Seriously.

It's not all shows and video games, though. Being a geek also makes me want to learn more about programming and electronics:

(By CW fan Jane M.)

John and I have done some simple stuff, wiring up LEDs for various cosplays, but my dream is to build my own nixie tube clock from scratch.

Because I can never get too much steampunk. NEVAH!

Here's one for the Brown Coats:

And the Whovians:

(And Minecrafters!)

And the... uh... Middle Earthers? Do Tolkien geeks have a nick name?

(Submitted by Emily H. and made by Cakerator)

Regardless, can you believe this Witch-king of Angmar is cake?!

And finally, can't forget superheroes and comic books - because what geek girl doesn't want to be Wonder Woman?

Though I might settle for this cake. So pretty.

Hope you're doing something geeky today, guys!

Olá de Lisboa! (I'm in Lisbon right now for work...)

Thank you everybody who has tested on canary - I'm about to push the code up to stable. I know that not everything has been tested and there's a lot in this deploy, so I expect some things to break or be weird. We have ported a lot more of the "older" pages to the newer formats, so there will be some UI changes in a few places, but it shouldn't be anything too major.

Watch for: One thing I know will require tuning, we now have added rate limits (which basically allows us to control how rapidly DW pages are loaded.) This is a protection mostly designed against bots, but any time in my career I've rolled out new rate limits, I've learned someone is hitting them and they have to be tuned. So if you see them, please let me know!

Anyway please do comment and I'll work to fix things today. We also have a rollback ready in case we need to (and I'll be honest, I expect we may need to... we really should do more frequent deploys.)

Known Issues

  • Fixed: Search has gone walkabout.
  • Fixed: Some UI weirdness with Manage Tags.
  • Fixed: Login redirects are not working.
  • Fixed: Login page sometimes returning 'invalid form submission.'
  • Fixed: Rename keywords checkbox on icons page also gone walkabout.
  • Fixed: Uploading large icon files erroring / not going to the image editor.

As always, thank you for your patience and supporting our scrappy little service!

I got these text messages from my dad after my mother confessed he wasn’t actually my biological dad. I’m 31 years old and this is the first I knew of it.

More to me then any jewel that can be found, love always Papa

thing

This is the last Christmas card I ever got from my dad. He had a fatal stroke on the day before Christmas 5 years ago. He was right – I’ve had some amazing adventures since – a doctorate, a Fulbright, a ton of travel, lots of love and now totally ready to work on the toughest of problems.

letter

Ironically, I also don’t sleep much… My research assistants always laugh when I send them emails at 3 am. But I’m dreaming up solutions to problems and they just can’t wait…

Hi Frank,

I’ve been following PostSecret now for over a decade and this is my first e-mail to you.

I’m writing in response to one of the Father’s Day secrets. The one that says the dad wasn’t a good man to his son when he was young, but that he’s trying to do better now and it’s hard. I wanted to let him know that he shouldn’t stop trying to find ways to connect.  Please be patient and please don’t stop trying. The nature of any relationship is built on much more complex circumstances than can be realized without time, effort, understanding, and forgiveness. Your son needs time to work through his experiences and feelings too, and hopefully he’ll get there (and maybe he won’t). Either way, don’t stop showing up in all the little and big ways.

Oddly, I discovered PostSecret when my dad and I were asked to do voice-overs for one of the promo videos for the “A Lifetime of Secrets” book release. The secret he read was about fatherhood. Mine was about fate. Years later, when I went to visit the PostSecret exhibit at the National Postal Museum, the secrets we read were displayed right next to each other. I started crying right in the middle of the museum. I’ve attached them to this e-mail. Truly, it’s all in the little things. If you can’t read them the first ones says, “If you’re waiting for a sign. . . this is it. Do it. It will be amazing. The other postcard read, “I LOVE HER ANYWAYS” and on the other side was a black and white sonogram with the words, “I know she’s not mine.”

My Dad sent this message to me the night before I was supposed to fly home from a trip to Paris. . . He died last year. I listen to this message every time I fly now.

Almost 4 years ago I heard a voicemail on PostSecret from a girl’s deceased grandmother singing to her. I decided that I wanted to keep voicemails from my loved ones just in case. I am so very thankful that secret because now I have my dad’s voice to listen to. he passed away 4 years ago.

I saved many voicemails from my dad and made them into this piece of artwork. He died on Valentine’s Day.
This is my favorite piece of artwork I’ve ever made

25 Questions for Dad

Jun. 21st, 2026 12:12 am
[syndicated profile] post_secret_feed

Posted by Frank

I asked PostSecret followers to suggest questions that I could ask my dad for an unforgettable interview. More than 1,000 questions came back.

This was the original post:

Image

I was thrilled with all the thoughtful questions shared with me, from the delightful to the profound. I read them all and picked 25 to ask my father. At a family dinner the night before our day of tandem paragliding, as an experiment, I peppered three into our conversation. . . it didn’t go well.

Like many families, ours was far from perfect, with divorce and estrangement being a part of it. So when other family members began responding to some of my father’s answers, long-buried feelings and some judgement turned the interview sour. Because of that learning experience, I changed some of my questions and gained three insights for when I would try again the next day.

• Avoid questions about regrets or mistakes. Instead, start with questions that include the word “favorite”, like, “What’s your favorite decade and why”?
• Try to keep the questions open-ended and let responses spark other questions naturally. Aim for a flowing conversation rather than an interview.
• Really listen. . . No, really listen.

On the two hour drive to the Gliderport the next day, it was just my father and me in the car. I told him how much it meant to me to go through these questions and get to know him better. He was game so I cautiously started. He passed on some of the questions, but then really began to share a lot with me, including a secret. He even started asking me some of the same questions! The spirit in the car was supportive and generous, with some heartfelt laughs as we used questions as prompts for our once-in-a-lifetime conversation.

Even though we were unable to do any gliding because of wind conditions, I’ll never forget that day and the new appreciation I discovered for my father. I can’t reveal the secret he told me but another part of our conversation shocked me. I asked this gentle and caring man; “What is the most common misconception people have about you?” He said. “When I was ten-years-old, my mom spanked me for the last time. I don’t think you know how stubborn I was then but you do know how stern your Grandmother could be. I remember through my tears and pain looking at my mother and saying, with spite, ‘I like getting spanked’!”

Here are the 25 questions that guided our conversation.

~~~
Do you have a favorite snack, song, television show, recipe, comedy?
Can you tell me about your best friend when you were a kid and one of your adventures?
Can you describe a favorite memory about a family member?
What is the oldest story you know about our ancestors?
Is there something about me that you have always wanted to know but have never asked?
If this were to be our very last conversation, is there anything you would want to say to me?
What is your first memory?
Did you ever get into trouble as a kid? What happened?
If there was a biography of you, how would you want to be described?
What choice are you thankful that you did not make?
What is the best advice you remember from your father?
Is there anything you wish you had said to someone but didn’t have the chance?
Can you teach me something?
What is something you would like me to ask you?
What do you wish you would have spent less time worrying about?
What is something you deliberately did not tell me as a child and why?
What is the best part of your day? What makes you feel most alive?
What is the last thing you changed your mind about?
What things helped you get through a difficult time in your life?
Over the course of your life, what trip or place was most special? Why?
What would you like to re-experience again because you did not appreciate it enough the first time?
Can you tell me something about yourself that I don’t know that you think would surprise, shock or delight me?
What habits served you the most through life?
What is the best mistake you have made, and why?
What do you hope my siblings and I have learned from you?
How are you doing right now? Is there anything on your mind right now that you’d like to talk about?
~~~

(When my father visits again, I’ll be sure to have his favorite comedy and snack ready.)

~~~
She did NOT in fact, “kick his ass,” but she’s working on it. She even won three games this time! Three out of seven, but all of the games she lost were close this time. Jason stuck around until Duke and Damian got back from school, but then quickly made his excuses and buggered off. She’s pretty sure they have a watch schedule so she has a bat around at all times. She can’t really blame them, she doesn’t exactly trust herself right now.
Alfred, true to his word, brings back a variety of cloth and thread along with the boys. He brought WAY more fabric than she needs, but she supposes the household isn’t exactly known for being frugal. As she and Tay begin looking it over and talking through their design considerations, Alfred once again, exceeds her expectations. Even though he had only made a few suggestions on the designs, he has a LOT to say about the construction.
“Since you plan to use your abilities to hold the suit together, why not, instead of constructing actual seams, finish the edges of your pieces in your decorative gold? You say you are able to sew with your powers, but that must take some amount of time to thread and un-thread. Simply sew false seams in advance and only use tacking and basting for construction. Surely removing and reapplying a few tactically placed threads would function better in an emergency.”
