I was born in Great Falls, Montana and grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. I was an undergraduate at Harvey Mudd in Claremont, California where I majored in physics and math, and got my Ph.D. in physics (studying string theory) at the University of Chicago. I started out as a (visiting) professor at the Joint Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps colleges, but I'm now a professor at Alma College in Michigan. Beyond science, I've had a lifelong passion for J.R.R. Tolkien, which has led me to create the Tolkien Meta-FAQ and a bunch of related essays and resources. I've got a bunch of other interests as well, but really, that's what my webpage is for.
At least at this point, I don't expect to spend much time on this blog thing, so don't hold your breath waiting for updates.
