So what can you expect as a student under Sylvia Live as a piano student?
First let’s give a little bit of background of Sylvia Live’s heritage.
This is Sylvia here. I began learning piano from 7 years of age, undertaking annual exams which led to opportunities for performance. On completion of secondary school studies, I entered Limerick School of Music under a renowned teacher, Ms. F. Moore who came from a very unique classical music background. Accomplishing teaching, performance and theoretical qualifications, I began teaching in the late 90’s. In the next few years I taught in different schools of music and learned a great deal about the varying standards of musical education, some ok, and more, not so good unfortunately. In 2005 I decided to take a break and step back from the tutoring and performance world and I withdrew to develop what is now an independent approach to tutoring. Returning to tutoring in 2008, I decided to fully focus on tutoring beginners, novices and intermediates. I have a passion to see each student excel and therefore to have the opportunity to perform with skills and knowledge that very often only elite musicians are privy to.
In 2021 with the arrival of the COVID pandemic, tutoring went online and the in person option was shelved. I started up a small podcast in 2021 which you can learn more about here at sylvialive.com. The podcast is still alive and well and currently is going through some upgrades.
Now in 2024, I am returning to my musical roots and passion and that is, tutoring one on one and in person. I am delighted to have the possibility of welcoming students to my location near Adare in Co. Limerick, Ireland.
So, what can you expect as a student? As a student, plan to attend weekly for your lessons. From the first lesson as a beginner you will play tunes. Lessons normally incorporate the learning and mastering of your instrument, in this case the piano, while also learning how to read and write music along with education on musical appreciation.
For those of you focussed on performance, there is the option of taking a specific course dedicated to honing and mastering performance skills.
If you need to take exams for school reasons or for personal accomplishment, these can certainly be included. While music theory at first seems a burden, I advise strongly (as a result of years of observation and experience) that it is a necessary inclusion. I have also helped many junior and leaving certificate students prepare for their music practicals.
I will explain to you in detail all the options once your strengths and weaknesses are understood in depth. Know that no one size fits all and the learning of music is a unique experience to you as a student. Once you are willing to dedicate regular time to private practice and extra time when needed for rehearsals for performances, you will have ample opportunity to excel, and develop a lifelong skill that will give you so much satisfaction.
I do wish to extend music beyond lesson times and therefore give you the opportunity for public performance whether via video online or in person events. After all this is what music is all about!
I am looking forward to meeting you and seeing if I can help you achieve your musical desires. Reach out today via email at admin@sylvialive.com or text for a call back to +353 89 989 6436.
