Here be updates on fannish goals and other ramblings. (●'◡'●) It just struck me that I wouldn't have had the wherewithal/courage to write and publish a post like this a year ago, so I'm pleased as a recovering lurker!

Fic talk
I finished a draft of my fic! The one I complained about it in my last post. It is currently a bit over 6k. One of my goals this month was to get it done, so that is fantastic. :) The quality is pretty acceptable. Only minor revisions left, I believe/hope. And then I can finally start on this other fic I promised to write for a friend! My other writing goal this month was to write a total of 7k words, which I haven't, but the milestone above matters more to me.

I've also been trying to read (and ergo comment) more on fic. I'm making progress on my bingo cards (see here for links), but haven't gotten a bingo yet. I feel like I could've read more. Still, some is better than none.

A great podcast, except...
I also finished listening to Midst (well, the first storyline anyway). It was great and I'm very satisfied, except. EXCEPT. I was let down by the episode where Weepe (scumbag extraordinare) has to watch his former business partner and beloved friend expire because of his actions. I was so excited to see him go to pieces, and to wallow in his unrequited worship for this woman who represents everything he believes he can't be.

Unfortunately, the actual episode felt rather stilted, sluggish, and forced, in my humble subjective opinion. So close, but not quite there. I hope there is good fic, though it is a tiny fandom. It's like, the one itch that feels terribly unscratched.

Where is the toxic fic? (cw: talk of dubcon)
I did fulfill my goal of reading some Beyond Evil fic on AO3. I'm afraid there were slim pickings since I seem to want something different from most others in the fandom. The main ship has so much toxic potential but the fics are kind of wholesome—often in a believable way, to be clear. I'm not criticizing their quality.

However, I just want for Juwon and Dongshik to regress and be terrible in new and interesting ways. I want hate sex, breakdowns, toxic vows, insane bids for attention, unhealthy repression and self-denial, dubcon fucking, a mix of dread and attraction, desperate misplaced efforts at atonement. They're both WEIRD and they should fuck weird. The disappointment I felt when I filtered for Dubious Content and only found 22 complete works was immeasurable, haha. And of those, only a handful actually applied to the ship.

Still on my Hello From the Magic Tavern bullshit
Loved the most recent episode. The premise? Immaculate. The hosts are basically reenacting Orpheus and Eurydice as they try to escape (pizza) hell, except they've got 3+ escapees holding onto a rope behind them like toddlers, and one of the most annoying recurring characters from the show keeps trying to tempt them into turning around to look at something cool. They nearly got defeated by a revolving door. It was great.

Oh noes! I thought that I did a Fannish Fifty 2025 post about [personal profile] stargore's SNFU Fanworks Challenge, but I haven't been able to find that post and now I'm wondering if what I'm recalling is that I intended to post about it...but got sidetracked somewhere along the way and didn't post. So now it's 2026 and here I am to pimp the SNFU Fanworks Challenge from 2025...but no worries that we're into the next year now...it's an open-ended challenge with no deadline.

The inspo for this challenge comes from Hard Core Logo and from the C6D (Canadian Six Degrees) fandoms, but there are no restrictions on what fandom you can choose for the challenge. See details on stargore's Dreamwidth and stargore's neocities website.

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board)

CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

I have gone with one of my top three shows, Dark, and song lyrics that fit particular characters.

What the fuck. Like actually, what the fuck. Um, content warning for mentions of suicide and suicidal states, I guess?

First of all, the reason I even decided to watch it in the first place was because I finally sent my Bachelor's thesis to go get printed and decided to reward myself by watching a movie. So I did what any sane 21st century person does and booted up a VPN to see what's on Tubi. Scrolled a bit and saw it there and I was just like, yeah, I feel like watching a cult classic. Let's see what you've got, Richard Kelly.

Good god, dude. I don't know where to even start.

Well, let's start with the funny bits. Ashley Tisdale and Jerry Trainor are in this movie for like a scene. And I instantly clocked both of them. I genuinely love it when that happens, especially when it's for small roles. "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!" Also, just. The fucking Smurfette rant, dude. One of the character moments of all time, I mean that genuinely.

Which brings me to my next point: Donnie is just a fucking kid oh my god. Jake Gyllenhaal is just a bit too old for the role, but by the end I bought into it, I bought into the idea that this is an actual dipshit teenager. But he's a dipshit teenager who cares, man, and he's frustrated because of all the condescending amoral fuckfaces that run things. That's not even getting into how he's severely mentally ill. Like okay, I guess the whole thing with Frank and the end of the world was real in a way, but even before all that he struggles to find meaning in his life to the point of extreme distress. In fact, I imagine this preventing the end of the world scheme wouldn't have worked with someone ''sane''. The whole plot is like a suicidal person's power fantasy. Ask me how I know.

Anyway, I love this character. I cried when he died but also... it was kind of beautiful in a way. IDK I think I'm gonna need 5-10 years to figure out how to articulate it properly.

The film itself struck me as very Lynchian. Not just in the sense of surreal things happening in middle America (though that's part of it) but also for the heart at the center of it? Like, it's certainly got that 2000s edge to it, without dropping any f-slurs or anything, but at it's core it cares, just like Donnie cares and like Drew Barrymore's character cares about actually teaching her students something and how his family cares even if they can't articulate it. It's empathetic to its characters, it tries to understand them and their struggles and tries to get you to understand too. It's really not something I expected from this type of movie.

But also. This is probably already a viral social media post somewhere, but you know when you watch a popular thing and suddenly you see its fingerprints in so many other things you've seen? Yeah, this movie is definitely that. I was primarily thinking of Dark, the German Netflix show I was obsessed with at the end of high school/beginning of uni. One or both of  Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese (creators of that show) saw this and were like "Okay wait, I want to do something like this but dig deep into the dysfunctional aspects and also into the time travel. And it needs to be set in Germany." And to be clear, I don't mean this as a diss towards those creators, I mean this in the sense that I recognize how someone could derive the concepts they did from this movie, speaking as an artist myself. It's actually a bit hard to articulate what exactly I'm seeing, becuase it's not even the big stuff like the time travel or the specific way it plays out (altho, the ending where the main character has to die for everyone else's happiness definitely makes me go hmmmm) I mean specific scenes and characters have a certain vibe to them, even if they ultimately develop differently in each piece of media.

There's probably more to say about time travel and trauma in fiction, but I would need to sit on it more. Maybe watch The Butterfly Effect (2004) where the main character also solves the problems by killing himself.

Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

1. Group of misfits saving the world - they might not all like or trust each other, but on the plus side they can be unpredictable enough that the villain doesn't know what they'll do next either.

2. Enemies forced to work together - the angst! Maybe there's the potential they'll stop being enemies and become an unstoppable power couple instead.

3. Hurt / comfort - enough said.

4. Rags to riches - especially when there's a steep learning curve to go with the riches (which don't come that easily).

5. Reluctant Chosen One  - 'what do you mean I have to save the world? I'm a mess!'

*The other two are Star Trek the original series and Babylon 5, just don’t ask me in what order.

What makes you feel old or young?
What are your favorite TV shows?

Akane-banashi #191: Ooh, I loved the art there, it was almost like a Junji Ito pageturn jumpscare, that one panel with the eyes. I don't know what Akane grasped, but I'm excited to see how it influences her version of the Shinigami rakugo story.

Harukaze Mound #30 [final]: Aw. I was so ??? when I started it and it started fast forwarding and timeskipping like crazy. I was like, ah fuck, it got cancelled, didn't it? Yup. Last chapter. I'm sad, I thought it was decent!

Hima-Ten!
#75: It feels like things are heading towards a climax of some kind! I really hope it's not a series ending climax, though. I still have no idea how this series is going to get to Himari/Iemori as the endgame as signposted by the title tbh. But it's a nice fun little series I'm still enjoying!

Kagurabachi #109: Oooohhhhhhhh okay, this was such a good chapter. This one definitely feels like a series ending climax, but it's getting so good that I almost don't mind that it's going to finish off the series. At least it had a nice little run? I don't know how to discuss it more without some pretty big potential spoilers... I wonder if what happened is going to stick, or if it's going to get undone with an asspull. I don't think I'd mind either conclusion, but if it sticks, that's pretty gutsy of the mangaka. Excited to see how this continues to unfold!

Under Doctor #1: Potentially interesting concept, but the art is not great and I'm getting the vibe that it's either not going to be very serious, or if it tries serious it's going to be really bad at it. Comes off as kind of half baked. I won't be surprised if it gets cancelled soon; I will be surprised if it gets more than 50 chapters.

Winter Weather & Media Backlogs

Freezing temps have officially hit my area, but I'm safe at home. I called in to work; they don't pay me nearly well enough to risk driving on ice to get there, so I'm using a PTO sick day. On the one hand, at least I'm getting that paltry PTO money, but on the other, I kind of wish that I could waive it and just take an attendance point instead, because I overheard one of the managers say that they're waiving all attendance points for today. The best part about PTO is that because of the union, they can't ever deny it or get you in trouble for using it. That's way more important to me than the what, ~$56 per shift? that ends up in my paycheck. But it is what it is. I haven't called out frivolously since May of last year, and I think my attendance points total is like, 1, which is nowhere near even a warning. And it's not like I plan on taking another vacation after I went on a trip in December and spent sooo much money lol. I can't afford another vacation yet! But yeah, I'm doing fine in the weather so far. I've neither lost power nor had any pipes break yet, as far as I know (apartment complex). I did get a heated blanket to prepare, and it's very warm and cozy! I love it (and so does my cat lol).

Speaking of work, though, the union is apparently very close to bringing up our wages. $2/hour no more! They've asked that employees show up to the next negotiation session, which is luckily on one of my off days, so I think that I'm definitely going to go. The weather should be warm enough by then that it'll be safe to drive down. The raises they're fighting for would give me $200 more to take home a week after taxes. I don't even care about the other stuff they're fighting for, like more PTO and free shift meals and free parking-- that would all be nice, but I'd sacrifice them all in an instant for the raises. I don't know what help I'll actually be at negotiations, especially since I'm a people pleaser who likes to suck up to the bosses, but if the union is asking for employees to show up, I'll show up. They just better not make me do the talking lol.

In completely unrelated news, I started making a list of all of the books and comics and games that I owned but haven't finished yet, thinking that it could help motivate me to finish them. But seeing the big lists is having the opposite effect... I don't like having stuff that I've bought just sit on a shelf (digital or physical), but hmm, treating it as a checklist isn't being very helpful either. Especially since video games make up the lengthiest sublists, but since I've been on a Naruto kick, I haven't really been playing video games-- instead I've been watching anime. I don't want to feel guilty for not playing these games or reading these comics or books, so I don't think the checklist approach is helping. But I do want to actually pick them up! The eternal struggle, I suppose.

Maybe I should make a shorter checklist? Like pick out a few pieces of media per month, and make it my goal that month to read those or play those or whatever. It's a little late for January, but I could pick like one unplayed video game, one unread book, and one or two unopened comic books for February and make it a goal to finish those over the course of the month. I don't think that would be too much.

Okay, then, January media goals:
  • Finish the story mode of Rift of the Necodancer (I'm almost there! On the last chapter)
  • Finish that baihe novel I stalled out on, The Beauty's Blade
  • Catch up again with the Absolute Universe DC titles that I'm interested in (Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, maybe Superman)

And February media goals:
  • Play The Dark Queen of Mortholme
  • Get back to The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy and finish some more routes
  • Start playing Minecraft again (I'm feeling the itch, and it's not part of my backlog but there's no good reason to put it off)
  • Read my omnibus of George Perez's Wonder Woman
  • Finish reading the fifth volume of the 7th Time Loop LN series

Of course, I hope I'm able to get through more of my backlog than just these, but I don't want to make my goals list too large and intimidating. A few video games, a few comic books, one or two novels. And of course I'm going to continue to watch the Naruto anime and play Hollow Knight Silksong, but those are more on my "currently doing" list and not really part of any backlogs I have.

Oh, and thinking about February reminds me that my birthday is coming up! I love my birthday. I should start planning what I want to do. Luckily it's on one of my off days, so no PTO will need to be used. But I definitely need at least a dinner plan of some sort, and maybe a lunch with friends or something.

Switching to Linux

My attempt at Linux Minut XFCE basically went exactly the same as trying to install Linux Mint Cinnamon did, and I still need zero point one more GB of space to install Linux Mint XFCE on my laptop. Kinda my bad for not seeing that coming; apparently, if I can't handle the general amount for a Linux Mint install, I can't handle either Cinnamon or XFCE versions.

*pulls out ☕ to mull this over*

Not gonna lie, I don't really get how my available GB is being determined here. Is the installer trying to fit the Linux OS alongside my Windows OS? I'm supposedly using 48 GB out of 58 GB. I guess I don't really have to understand how I only have 16 GB for this install, but it does make it feel like I'm just guessing about finding a different distro.

An expansion from the comments of the PF post:I wasn't at the point in the Linux Mint installer where I was given the chance to delete Windows when I was getting the lack of space message -- I chose my language, got the screen for connecting to a wifi network, and then I just get a screen informing me that I only have 16 GB when I need 16.1 GB. I haven't actually gotten a screen where I should tell the installer to replace Windows.

Instead of constantly checking the about section for my device, I'm just copying some info over here:
  • Processor: Intel Celeron N4000 CPU @ 1.10 GHz
  • Installed RAM: 3.81 usable GB out of 4 GB (1 out of 1 slots)
  • Graphics Card: Intel UHD Graphics 600 (512 MB)
  • Storage: 58 GB SSD
  • System Type: 64-bit operating system

So... If I should err on the side of caution and stick to 16 GB of storage, what Linux distros can I install?

Bodhi LinuxI can meet the recommended system requirements for Bodhi Linux - 64-bit, 1.0 GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM, 10 GB of drive space. I think the Standard Release of 7 would probably be the one I'd consider, though I'm not sure if it's close enough to the release of 8 that I should wait a bit for that.

LubuntuI've run into a lot of mentions of Lubuntu, but it feels less than helpful to run into "we will no longer provide minimum system requirements" ('Taking a new direction'). I would probably expect less than the amounts listed for Ubuntu 24 on Ask Ubuntu, but all I'm seeing for specifically Lubuntu 24 is - 64-bit processor, at least 4 GB of RAM. If I look into this more, I should keep in mind Long Term Support (LTS releases) and consider LTS 24 - Noble Numbat instead of the Quokka one.

[Post-installation update: My guesstimate in the comments that is the current LTS version of Lubuntu is probably using a smidge under 10 GB, which isn't half bad. I just wish I wouldn't have had to go through the installation process itself in order to find that out. Part of the reason that I chose Lubuntu is that it does clearly state in its documentation that you can easily upgrade to the next current LTS release, not unlike updating with Windows, instead of having to do a new series install as with Linux Lite.]

Linux LiteI do keep running into Linux Lite in compilations of lighter Linux distros to try, but the minimum SSD requirement is 40 GB. Without really understanding why I've been told by the Linux Minut installer that I only have 16 GB to work with, I don't know if I would be able to access more of my listed SSD amount above. Upgrade note: I have an old laptop with a version of Linux Lite on it, and I stopped using it when I hit the end of the current series and needed to face a new install for the next series. You can call it Windows induced laziness, but I definitely prefer the ability to easily hit an update button and just move on with the next release.

(Update-slash-Note: I'm a little fascinated trying to piece together what's going on with the one developer based on forum posts, but I think the idea of trying to have A.I. Support has been abandoned on the website in favor of a wiki. I'm not currently seeing any further updates about offering A.I. Services in the Shop in order to help fund Linux Lite in the forum, but the shop link is generating a 404 page, as of January 2026.)

Zorin LiteI've seen the Lite version of Zorin OS mentioned as well, but I'm just not feeling very enthusiastic about that when the Lite version will be sunset in the reasonably near future. Support until June 2029 isn't nothing, but like, I'd just be prolonging getting the Core version, which I'm on the cusp of not meeting the system requirements for in 2026 (15 GB for Core). Waiting until 2028 or 2029 to opt for the Core version probably won't help me out here.

You know that thing where you dream about a person and build a whole relationship with them, only to wake up and realize they aren't real at all? Yeah, that happened to me this morning.

There was this guy whose name I never got but it seemed like it didn't need to be mentioned in the dream because I was already friends with him. He was a cis white guy, kinda on the shorter side, and clearly worked out. And he was genuinely nice and cared to listen to what I had to say! I was telling him about some task he did wrong, and he was just like :o! We were kinda flirting and being physically affectionate, and I was going to ask him out but that's right when I woke up -_-

And to rub salt in the wound my first thought upon waking was "maybe this is a sign I should hit that guy up" only to realize that cannot happen on account of him not being a real person at all. Sucks!!

Voting is up for Round 22 of [community profile] tvmovie20in20 - Please vote for your favorite Theme, Category and Artists' Choice. Round 23 sign-ups are up and I'm planning on joining it, I just don't know what subject to do. I kinda want do a "new" show, so I'm thinking between High Potential, Doc, Heated Rivalry or Fallout. I'd love to do The Hunting Party but sadly I cannot find a source for screencaps and I was only able to download a handful of images for the show on their official site. EDIT: I did just find Melissa Roxburgh fansite with a gallery! YAY! So probably going to go with The Hunting Party unless I go with her character for the next round of [community profile] characters20in20 - again I haven't quite decided. Maybe both? The Hunting Party for tvmovie, and her character for characters?

Managed to upload all my femslash to the Sunset Archive. I don't have a lot, so it's kinda faster to upload those in comparison to my other works I still need to upload to AO3 and then SquidgeWorld. Sunset is pretty small, so there's not a lot of works already there. Kinda like for CFAA. BTW the [community profile] fandomtrees gifts were revealed - ended up getting three fics, A Shared Space by Sobriquett (Bridgerton, Kate/Anthony), Bone Deep Cold by jenab (The Flash CW, Barry/Caitlin), and Once More, With Feeling by freevistas (Sense8, Lito/Hernando/Dani) which are all VERY lovely, please read them if you like the pairings. Also received some SHIP banners (now located on my profile page) by the lovely [personal profile] maevedarcy (Again, soooo pretty! I miss ship buttons/banners!). Also received this post's icon (Annalise/Nathan/Gabriel from the Bastard Son & Devil Himself) by [personal profile] goodbyebird which is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!

In response of three peoples' trees, I've made three MCU fics a Baby From Another Universe (Bucky/Yelena, Alexei/Melina), only one bed (for three) (Darcy/Pietro/Wanda), and girlfriend's new pet (Kate/Yelena). Plus made some icons and a book rec for others.

Speaking of Annalise/Nathan/Gabriel, I have just a week left for my prompt of "Hold Each Other by A Great Big World" for [community profile] smallfandomfest which I love the song, and someone early on had made a fanvid for the ship (very pretty, check it out!) which I love... but so far, hasn't inspired me which sucks 'cause it's like the perfect song for them. Ugh, I hate writer's block... If anyone happens to see this and can prompt with something they'd like to see for OT3 please let me know (or feel free to message me if you want to be private).

The latest [community profile] threesentenceficathon - one of my favorite fandom events - has been live for a week, and will be open to new prompts until February 15.

I've written a few ficlets for The Magnus Archives and Stranger Things, and will post a roundup once the event wraps up.

I've also left prompts for several of my fandoms, including obscure ones like The Hypnotists, because hope springs eternal.

Some things that I have had stashed away for a little while:

1. [personal profile] sovay very kindly sent me a copy of Exit Through the Fireplace by Kate Dunn, which was waiting for me at the new house when I got here. It is about repertory theatre with lots of accounts on every aspect from actors and others involved, including a lot of people I have watched in old telly, so I enjoyed it a lot.

But having only recently before tried to make a post explaining what I loved about Terence Rattigan's plays, including floundering about trying to say how effective his dialogue is, I was v pleased to find this quote:

John Moffatt: (On being in rep, and the difficulty of remembering the lines, doing a new play every week): "You got to know who the good writers were. With Rattigan you barely had to learn it at all, even after just blocking it you almost knew it because it is so beautifully written. The only way to reply to something that has just been said is what he's written."

2. Talking of people being kind, [personal profile] swordznsorcery wrote me a lovely Sapphire & Steel story with a new Element and a stealth crossover very RTMI here, and if you also like S&S, I recommend taking a look, as it's great! <3

3. The book I was reading introduced me to the utterly untrue but very S&S like urban myth/ghost story of the Zanetti Train. Sounds like an Assignment to me, or a film I would watch, anyway. (It seems to have been taken from a Ukrainian work of fiction, most likely - certainly not one detail of it has any truth in it).

4. Making personalised bingo cards proved to be exactly in my wheelhouse right now, so I had fun with that. If anyone missed it the other day and would like one, feel free to still ask! (Here or there, whatever).

5. Random AO3 tag found while wrangling that is currently amusing me: It is literally just Twelfth Night but with Moomins.

Otherwise still slowly progressing and all that etc etc etc.

Challenge #4: Rec Your Last Page: Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!
This is one of those prompts where it feels like it's supposed to be similar to those 'what your last five emoji this week say about you' posts, but then I have to admit that I haven't used five emoji in a week.

Unsurprisingly, I've mostly been camping out on the Snowflake Challenge and snowflake_mods communities over on Dreamwidth, since it's January. I'm not counting visiting my own page on Dreamwidth or Pillowfort for challenge entries, so I think that leaves my last page as visiting a page about superwash wool.

(I've been thinking of knitting a relative something out of superwash wool yarn. It's not happening right now, obviously, but I've been thinking of something like a hooded cowl.)
