Workhorse Microphones

Since 2011, Workhorse Microphones has been producing excellent handcrafted, professional quality microphones and instruments while providing a transparent, one on one approach to customer service. Workhorse Microphones is owned and operated by microphone builder, musician, artist, recording engineer, and part-time political theorist Patrick Callan.

Workhorse Microphones are not mass produced, they are made one at a time or in small batches. Each microphone is unique and functions both as an excellent professional quality microphone and as a work of art.

Workhorse Microphones began in the spring of 2011, I needed microphones to do some recordings. Since there was no way I’d be able to afford some decent microphones in the near future, I decided to make my own.

It didn’t take long before I was hooked and was spending much more time building microphones, researching microphones, designing microphones, etc. than I was spending time actually playing guitar and recording.

I started getting requests from friends and acquaintances to build them microphones for pay, I was reluctant at first but when I got fired from my day job in October of 2011, I hit the ground running and have been self-employed building microphones for a living ever since.

I had started out building microphones around electret capsules, carbon button elements, and crystal elements and in March of 2012, I graduated to building Ribbon Microphones from scratch. Ribbon Microphones have a kind of zen like simplicity to them and they sound incredible.

For me there is something magical about microphones: They take sound from the real world, turn it into an electrical signal, which is then amplified, converted to an audio signal, and is put back into the world either louder, or recorded for later playback. I love microphones, I love that I can call this my job.

Welcome to my website. Take a look around, look at pictures of microphones, listen to the audio samples, check out the links. Let me know if you have any questions. Buy my microphones, and tell your friends they should buy my microphones.
