Opening General Session Featuring MSCA David Geith, UA General President Mark McManus and Keynote Speaker Doug Brown

The 40th Annual MSCA Education Conference kicks off with MSCA Chair David Geith welcoming you to this milestone event, celebrating four decades of industry leadership and collaboration. UA General President Mark McManus will also take the stage to share an update, highlighting the strength and continued impact of our long-standing partnership with the United Association.

Then, we’ll plug in with our main speaker this morning, platinum selling recroding artist and songwriter Doug Brown. He will lead our audience with Fearless Collaboration – setting you up for the week with a presentation that teaches the ability to collaborate without the fear of failure. This presentation is designed specifically to help you not only hear, but engage and experience key fundamentals used by the worlds top music makers to write & create music fearlessly.

There are No Dumb Ideas: Any idea spoken aloud has the potential to either be the great idea or inspire the great idea. Leave nothing unsaid.

Listening: Creating is proactive, requires doing, but never at the sacrifice of listening to each other first. To our teammates, our clients or our customers, they deserve our attention & often have the answer we are looking for.

Be True: Whether in music or in business, authenticity always wins. A song created with the goal of being a hit rarely has the heart to do so.

Humility: Never assume you’re the smartest or most talented person in the room. Collaborating from a place a humility creates space for each of our team member’s talents to shine & grow.

Start your morning with inspiration to amplify your voice this week.

Afternoon Education- 40 years of MSCA

This afternoon session brings together experienced contractor voices and practical leadership insight to address what it takes to build a successful, sustainable career in service. MSCA Vice-Chair Mike McHenry moderates a panel of four MSCA contractors representing different stages of leadership. Together, they will share real-world perspectives on how leadership evolves over time—what works, what changes, and what it takes to stay effective as your role and responsibilities grow.

Following the panel, Kristyn Drennen, CEO of TransformCXO and Meta Performance Executive Coach, will deliver “Building a Business that Doesn’t Break You.” She will challenge the idea that sustained success comes from pushing harder, focusing instead on the structure and mindset required to lead effectively over the long term. Drawing from her work with high-performing leaders, Kristyn will unpack the hidden pressures that often sit with owners and executives—the constant decision-making, the weight of responsibility, and the tendency to become the bottleneck—and offer a more sustainable path forward.

Through personal stories and guided reflection, she will help attendees identify where they are operating reactively versus leading with intention. The session introduces a practical framework for aligning leadership identity with daily actions, giving leaders a clearer way to make decisions, set priorities, and build accountability within their teams.

Education Session - Profit Starts with People sponsored by WiMI

Profit is always a core focus in the mechanical service industry, but companies often spend more time measuring it than understanding how to build and sustain it. Today, the key drivers of long-term profitability are technology and people, and this session focuses on the people side of the equation. Using the concept of perspective, the session connects people, operations, and profitability to uncover more effective ways to drive business performance.

Field vs. Office Alignment
• Identify disconnects between field and office teams
• Use practical training to build mutual understanding of roles
• Create shared goals, stronger collaboration, and improved efficiency Service Team Perspective
• Improve communication across the entire team
• Uncover hidden and overlooked costs
• Understand and reduce opportunity costs to improve margins Generational Perspective
• Explore how different generations impact the business
• Leverage next-generation talent as a bridge between people and technology
• Turn generational strengths into a competitive advantage
This session is going to help you shift perspectives to better align people with profitability and drive sustainable business performance.

Education Session - Service AI: Where the Industry Stands and Where It's Headed

AI isn’t new anymore, but are you actually using it? This 75-minute session cuts through the noise with a practical update on the major AI platforms (GPT, Claude, Gemini, and Co-Pilot) and then gets specific about what matters most: how your service software is putting AI to work.

Sean McGuire and Mike McHenry break down what ServiceTitan, ServiceTrade, BuildOps, and Access Coins are actually doing with AI inside their platforms. Mike brings the contractor perspective; Sean covers the technology. Together, they’ll help you separate real capability from marketing hype and leave with a clearer picture of where to focus your attention.

Education Session - THE LEADERSHIP GIST: The Vibe You Didn’t Know You Were Giving

What if we asked someone on your team to describe your leadership is 20 seconds, what would they say?
The answer? That’s your leadership GIST.

So, what makes a great leader?
Spoiler alert: it’s not your title, your years of experience, or even how smart you are.
It’s how people experience your leadership. And that comes from your beliefs about leadership.

Yep—the quiet, below the surface beliefs you have about leadership are running the show.
They shape how you act, how you respond, and how people experience you every single day.
That experience? That’s your leadership GIST.
Your vibe. Your flavor. Your “this is what it’s like to be led by you.”
It’s how people experience your leadership.

Now here’s where it gets interesting…
A lot of what we believe about leadership we didn’t even choose it. Not all leadership beliefs are created equal. Some were inherited. Some are outdated. Some just don’t work anymore.
The world has changed. Leadership has evolved. The issue is… have you?
Here are some tough questions:
Are you evolving—or just refining the same old patterns?
Are your habits intentional… or just well-practiced?
Do you even know what your default tendencies are?
Because here’s the deal: you can’t change what you don’t know.
And those tendencies? They’re subtle. Automatic. Sometimes invisible to you and obvious to everyone else. Which means your leadership “GIST” might be sending messages you never intended and creating experiences you didn’t intend to create.

And those little things you think aren’t a big deal? Oh… they’re a big deal. And, they all add up. Fast.
In this session, we’re going beneath the surface of your leadership to uncover what’s really shaping your GIST. We’ll spotlight the patterns you don’t always see—the habits, tendencies, and moments that are constantly communicating (whether you mean them to or not).

Backed by powerful research, you’ll see just how much your leadership actually impacts the people around you. And we won’t stop there—we’ll dig into what it takes to shape your GIST into something intentional, effective, and worth experiencing.

Remember: Your leadership isn’t what you think it is—it’s what people feel it is.

Education Session - Smooth Transitions: Succession Planning Without the Static

Precision and strategy matter as much in mechanical engineering as in leadership transitions. In this interactive session with Keith Scott and Rebecca Klein of TALLsmall Productions, participants will explore how the conversations that are had and those that have been swept under the carpet both play starring roles in generational handoffs.

We will examine effective strategies for succession success and discuss:

  • Succession Planning: What you need to do today to plan for a decade from now.
  • Unlocking Gatekeeping: How to avoid institutional knowledge getting stuck in one person’s mind.
  • Collaborative Culture: How to create a culture where information is shared and voices of all generations are heard, including creative ways for leaders to stay involved as they wind down their careers.
  • Family Dynamics: How to have the tough conversations at work and then hang out on the weekend.

Education Session - Selling Service: Building a High-Performing Team

Service sales is essential for a successful mechanical service business. This session outlines how to build a high-performing sales team for HVAC, refrigeration, and plumbing. Bob Lake will share effective sales strategies, discuss who should sell in your organization, and offer tips on setting them up for success, including whether to separate sales from operations.

We will thoroughly examine sales incentive plans for both maintenance and retrofit work that are designed to enhance performance while preserving profit margins, ensuring mutual benefit for both sales personnel and the company. Leave with actionable steps to align your team and strategy for winning more service work.

Education Session - How AI Innovations Are Reinventing Mechanical Service Contractors for Scalable Growth

This session expands on the foundation introduced in the webinar and moves into real-world application for mechanical service contractors.

We’ve intentionally structured this session into two independent but complementary parts—so you gain both the strategic understanding and the practical tools to take action immediately.

Insight & Real-World Context: The first 45 minutes focus on insight and real-world context. We’ll separate fact from fiction and highlight AI innovations currently being used by mechanical service organizations to improve efficiency, increase revenue, and scale operations. You’ll see live use cases that demonstrate what’s working right now.

Hands-On Practical Application: The second 45 minutes shift into hands-on application. You’ll learn specific prompts, workflows, and real examples you can use immediately within your own AI tools to enhance service operations, sales, marketing, and overall execution.

By the end of this session, you’ll not only understand how AI is revolutionizing the industry—you’ll walk away with actionable ways to start using it today to become more proactive and position your organization for scalable growth.
