Look, if we remove the slippery slope fallacy from the list of logical fallacies, then before you know it we’ll be removing all the other informal fallacies from the list and will soon forget the very concept of an informal fallacy altogether.

One time, a physicist I know dismissed the entire field of philosophy with one simple declaration, and I still love him for it. “If we can’t know, it doesn’t matter.”

Philosophy instructors really need to contend with the reality that the lesson far too many students take away from philosophy is, in effect, that there just are no objectively correct answers to philosophical questions. A top priority should be nipping this in the bud.

Questions Trump and Harris MUST answer: • A priori knowledge: no or yes? • Abstract objects: Platonism or nominalism? • Experience machine: would you enter? • Mental content: internalism or externalism? • God: atheism or theism? • Laws of nature: non-Humean or Humean?

Turtles certainly can suffer. Barnacles almost certainly cannot, and any case lack the morally significant capacities of turtles. It’s quite simple.

Given that the vast majority of humans generally, and philosophers in particular, have been theists, one of the great psyops of 20th century philosophy was fostering a sense of God as some utterly bizarre, embarrassing notion with no place in respectable philosophical theorizing.

Thomas Nagel: “Eventually, I believe, current attempts to understand the mind by analogy with man-made computers that can perform superbly some of the same external tasks as conscious beings will be recognized as a gigantic waste of time.”

Pascal’s Wager is an extremely annoying argument. No one really likes it — not theists, not agnostics, not atheists. The most annoying thing about it is that, in the end, it’s probably sound.
