In 1934, @libertyhq was founded to defend our right to protest. And here we are again, 89 years later. What the Home Secretary is planning to do undermines our right to protest, and the way she is doing it is unlawful.

How many scandals and undercover documentaries do we need to move beyond the few bad apples narrative? The truth is, you don’t realise the extent of the abuse and harm unless it affects you or a loved one directly - and then you too become problematised & disbelieved

The same story again and again - people who have experienced the reality of the mental health system have spoken out about it for decades but are disbelieved and disregarded. There’ll be a half-hearted inquiry (at best) but the culture of institutionalised care will not change

The Government has just announced its new definition of ‘extremism’ It’s deeply cynical, completely unworkable, and no one supports it 🧵

Some personal news- I will be joining @libertyhq as Interim Director in June. Feeling a mixture of excitement about the future, & pride at what we have achieved at @NSUNnews over the past 3 years. I will miss the amazing @NSUNnews team so much. All the feelings, all at once.

There don’t seem to be any new announcements in the Prime Minister’s speech. It comes after a long week of the PM insulting people who take to the streets to exercise their democratic right to protest.

Shameless & appalling. Let’s see this for what it is: inflammatory & racist rhetoric to advance careers. Positioning rights as part of the “culture wars” for political gain. The only people who gain from dismantling rights are people in power. It won’t work. @libertyhq

The Home Secretary's inflammatory and racist rhetoric is designed to divide us – it won't work Time for all of us to stand up for our human rights

“Too much of the focus around mental health and mental ill-health in the last two decades has been on changing attitudes around mental health, and too little has been focused on changing the material conditions of those who experience mental ill-health.” @MarkOneinFour

This is the text of a speech I gave today in Gateshead: Mental health and the cost of living crisis "Being poor and experiencing mental ill-health don’t have to be entwined, but they are because of the ways we have set up our society." link.medium.com/4XUa8wqc1wb

It’s Women’s History Month – but if this definition of ‘extremism’ was around 100 years ago, it would have swept up the Suffragettes And if it was around in the last 50 years, it would have swept up anti-apartheid campaigners and people protesting against section 28

Secure units like this are particularly vulnerable to this kind of abusive culture. There is so much that needs to change, but maybe the first thing is that people need to be believed. Here is @RRowanOlive on “The complaints I never made”: mentalhealthtoday.co.uk/blog/awareness…

And that’s not to mention the irony of it all At Liberty we challenge this very Government every day for attempting to “negate the fundamental rights and freedoms of others” We’re fighting them in court right now for “undermining the UK’s system of parliamentary democracy”

I’m so proud & excited to be finally sharing @NSUNnews’s new strategic direction & theory of change. It feels like the right moment to say with clarity & conviction - this is who we are, this is what we do, & this is what we want to change.
