Protesters have even fully filled the President’s Ballroom and have taken to the podium where Sasse was moments ago. “Get the f*ck out of our swamp!” protestors are cheering.

For some at UF, @BenSasse is a polarizing choice for president. But for LGBT students and faculty, Sasse represents an attack on their existence. Here’s my story for @TheAlligator on how UF’s LGBT community is grappling with the Sasse announcement.

Protesters have now entered Emerson Hall where Sasse is addressing students. Cheers of “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Ben Sasse has got to go,” are able to be heard within the President’s Ballroom.

We’re asking—once again—that @BenSasse, who has kept a low profile since becoming @UF president, sit down with the student paper that will continue to cover his presidency no matter what. It’s time to grant an interview request with @TheAlligator.

I’m inside Emerson Alumni Hall for the three @BenSasse back-to-back public forums for faculty, staff and students. I’ll put some highlights here. Follow @makseminera and @TheAlligator for updates.

Fun environment reporter moment: This little guy is a rare yellow-billed loon, a migratory bird that has made his home in the Bellagio fountains after a pit stop at the Henderson Bird Preserve. Local birders are worried about him! Story to come @reviewjournal

Students aren’t letting up yet — they filled all 150 seats in the President’s Ballroom and turned it into a sit-in against @BenSasse. No update yet on if the last forum is being rescheduled.

The student forum ended early, and a UF spokesperson tells me they are going to wait to allow the students to express themselves and wait to make a decision on the third one. Protesters are currently laying out their demands, namely that Sasse doesn’t take the job. @TheAlligator

Some news: Next month, I’m hopping in my car and moving across the country to take on a position @reviewjournal covering water—and the severe lack of it—in the Las Vegas Valley. I couldn’t be happier to sink my teeth into this beat at my first big boy job 🌄🌵🏜️

Scenes from inside Tigert Hall, where a coalition of UF activists demanded to see @UF President @BenSasse on his first day to deliver their demands. He didn’t show — but they taped up their demands anyway on his office door and in the hall. Shot for @TheAlligator
Bryn Taylor, co-president of UF Graduate Assistants United, tapes posters to the President Office door in Tigert Hall Feb. 6, 2023. Sasse didn't make an appearance despite that being a goal of the protesters.
Three students hang up orange posters listing protester demands on the windows near the President's Office in Tigert Hall Feb. 6, 2023.
Ava Kaplan (middle), a UF political science senior rushes through a crowd of protesters staging a sit-in outside of President Ben Sasse's office that lasted an hour and a half Feb. 6, 2023.

Sasse and Rahul Patel, chair of the presidential search committee, are now doing a live-stream in a remote location that’s being broadcasted to the room protesters are. This is in lieu of the third forum for staff, a UF spokesperson told me. @TheAlligator
