I would actually love a “1000 biology papers you need to read before you die” book. About 1000 pages long: each page focused on 1 paper, with its original abstract or summary, a brief “review” of why its important, and 2-3 suggested further readings. Would anyone buy this?

It is very dangerous to label the development of these #COVIDー19 vaccines as “a miracle” or “in record time”. Over 40 years of research in mRNA biotech and billions of dollars invested through sustained private and public funding have been required to make this happen. 1/

Wow. 8 years ago we had the CRISPR paper by @doudna_lab ... Today, >10 patients essentially cured of Sickle cell disease and Beta-Thalassemia... @CRISPRTX @VertexPharma ... I don’t know if I’m quite realizing the kind of historic moment I’m living. #ASH2020

I’m not saying I’m a good peer-reviewer. All I’m saying is I don’t go around pretending I know way more than a group of people who dedicated 3-5+ years of their lives to something. No, my job is just try to make sure their major claims are solid and can stand the test of time. 🧐

A single cell state (gene expression, chromatin landscape) is not “the phenotype” of a cell. It’s only a small, small part of the phenotype (incl. disease). We need to move from cell state to cell function (and not just functional prediction).
