I’ve posted about it before, but Barbara Tuchman’s A DISTANT MIRROR is one the best books I’ve ever owned. It’s a history of 14th century Europe, but also something far more than that: a fever dream of an apocalyptic future. You read it thinking, “Could this happen again?”
Having met this character in many incarnations when I was growing up in Oklahoma and Texas, I can affirm that she is indestructible and will not give out no information (or pens).
Don’t make her have to count out change, neither.
These women are the REAL power in Oklahoma and Texas. They might have “bosses,” but they run things.
Be polite and remember their names. If you bring them something nice from your garden, they will never forget you. Befriending one of them is better than buying off six senators.
