    The ENTERPRISE had 280,000 shaft horsepower. We actually had more HP but were limited at top speed by torque on the shafts. ...we were limited in top speed to 32-33 kts because the bottom was a little dirty. In 1968, we cleaned her & probably had a top speed of 35-36 kts.

    "War Plane Costs Have Soared" NY Times -May 14, 1950 ...the B-17 Flying Fortress cost $238,000 a piece. Today, the B-36 super bombers are $5,757,584 a copy. In 1944...96,359 military planes were built costing $16B. That amount would buy only 2,779 B-36s today...
