In 2013 Adani’s bulldozers destroyed Kete, a Chhattisgarh village, to mine coal. I spent months tracking former Kete Adivasis to reconstruct how the village which was earlier opposed the mining was manipulated and divided over time to give up its land.

I grew up in Aligarh. Studied in Muslim schools. Muslim University. Most of my teachers were muslims. My best friends are Muslim. Today I feel ashamed as a Hindu. #CABBill

For months I collected data about the representation of Dalit, Adivasi and OBC students and researchers at various levels of academia in some of the elite universities in India. The results were stark. That story for @Nature in 6 charts. 🧵1/n

This is my Coming Out essay. I feel both vulnerable and free in putting this out. If parts of it sound off or rough, that might be because I am still trying to make sense of those parts. Here, I set something free.

Over months, I closely followed three generations of Dalit scientists & interviewed many others to understand the discrimination they faced in scientific institutes, and what happened when they spoke up. Narrating their stories here @undarkmag Thread (1)

I spent several months interviewing Dalit researchers in some of the top Indian science institutes, collecting stories of discrimination and consequences of speaking up. That story will run later today. Writing this tweet to thank everyone who spoke to me.

A journalism advise I got years ago and have benefitted from: Find good editors to work with. They are RARE. It is high time that publications put editor's name alongside reporter's name. That will help writers and readers know the forces that shaped a good story.

Super thrilled !!! My project queerbeat ( @queerbeat_media) received its first fund to report 4 BIG stories about LGBTQIA+ persons in India. I'd be collaborating with some terrific queer journalists and newsrooms to report & publish these stories. We cannot wait! #SmallSteps

What happens when privileged caste gay men dominate a queer space? Grateful to everyone who spoke to me for this story. Read it for the incredibly diverse and powerful voices in the piece: “I am gay. And I am Dalit.” +

This quote by one of the Adivasi PhD students I interviewed tells a lot-- “The day I would be able to say my full name without hesitation in an institute, I will feel that equality has arrived." 9/n

Beyond the PhD the representation falls off a cliff. At higher-tier IITs and the IISc, 98% of professors and more than 90% of assistant or associate professors are from privileged castes. Some institutes don’t have even one Dalit or Adivasi professor. 6/n
