- Working in a homeless shelter really awakened me to how important it is people to have their own private space. Having a bunch of beds next to one another really has a way of stoking tensions with people who can't get away from one another.Cities should be allowed to build housing for adults like this. We do it for hostels, and it can serve as "housing of last resort." Very cheap rent, by the bed. There'd have to be strictly enforced rules if paired with strangers, but it's not impossible.
