I grew up autistic but I didn't know it until I was 32. When my guardians took me to potlucks, I knew my role: 1. Find the cat who was supposedly scared of strangers 2. Immediately become best friends with the cat 3. Not leave my new best friend until it was time to leave

One time in a previous life I watched a family in an airport say, "Oh look, these [accessible] seats are open," & take them all. When 1 of them went to the bathroom, my weary disabled body took his seat, groaning on the way down, cane dropping. I will never be so brave.

When I was glared at, I turned around in my seat & pointedly looked at the accessible sign & said, "Oh, are you disabled?" They very awkwardly, sheepishly left. I have experienced some of the worst ableism of my life at airports. Who knows if I'll ever fly again, though.
