If you’re new to my page, welcome! My desire is for authentic dialogue, especially as we navigate through difficult topics at the intersection of Christianity and politics. I write about topics like these in a weekly newsletter, which you can find here:

If your Christianity causes you to be offended by someone asking the most powerful person in the country to be merciful towards the powerless, then you have deeply, deeply misunderstood the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Then Jesus said unto the sick, “you better have insurance.” Then Jesus said unto the stranger, “are you here legally?” Then Jesus said unto the hungry, “my taxes better not be paying for these loaves and fishes.” Then Jesus said unto the poor, “this is your own fault.”

I grew up being told “the older you get, the more conservative you become.” I’m finding that the older I get, the more I just want our society to be more tolerant, charitable, kind, peaceable, and ensure that everyone has what they need to survive and thrive.

Notice how it’s always “the Bible must inform our laws!” until it comes to welcoming the immigrant, helping the poor, feeding the hungry, bringing healthcare to the sick, forgiving debts, caring for our planet, laying down our swords, or loving our neighbors.

Growing up, I was told that the demise of Christianity would be caused by our country rejecting God. Now I believe it is actually caused by Christians blatantly rejecting the teachings of Jesus for the sake of political power.

This is deeply disturbing. The moment I start treating my wife as if she has no free will of her own, dictating her decisions, including making sure how she votes, that’s the moment I’m unfit to be her husband. My wife is my best friend and partner, not my subordinate.

If you see that God is in the business of protecting your preferred presidential candidate from death, but not the other person at the rally, or school children, or immigrants, or Palestinians, then it may be that you’re confusing your own political bias for God.

It reveals something deeply disturbing about our Christianity when we demand the government enforce the most literal and harsh interpretations of the few Bible verses about human sexuality, yet oppose the government carrying out any of the +3,000 verses about caring for the poor.

Imagine taking a few Bible verses on human sexuality as literal divine commands from God for all society, but minimizing the +3,000 verses calling for the care of immigrants, the marginalized, the oppressed, and the poor to a personal choice.
