Flu is important, but COVID is next level. From vaccine recommendations to isolation guidance, American leaders seem bent on aligning COVID policies to those for flu. That threatens to minimize the disease’s still-high toll, @KatherineJWu writes.

Overcoming dogma is always hard, but when it comes to how COVID is transmitted it has proved almost impossible. I commend @Mark_Butler_MP's words in Parliament yesterday. COVID is airborne. It makes a huge difference for him to say it so explicitly. Much credit to @Mon4Kooyong.

This is a big deal - "..implications are far-reaching, from individuals experiencing cognitive struggles to the potential impact on populations & the economy." Mounting research shows that COVID-19 leaves its mark on the brain,... theconversation.com/mounting-resea… via @ConversationUS

Pretty disturbing. We must do better at protecting the most vulnerable in our community. Everyone wants to do this but current approaches are clearly not sufficient. For one thing, #CleanIndoorAir is a must. Should be the same in aged care, hospitals & schools as in Parliament.

One of the most important topics covered in the COVID Safety For Schools Course is "Why should we care?" In the course Prof Jeremy Nicholson summarises what is currently known about the potential long-term impacts of COVID on kids.

Thanks to the Actuaries Institute for this analysis. The good news is the excess mortality is much less in 2023 than 2022, about half. The bad news is it is still a v large death toll (8-10,000) that if not compared to 2022 would shock more. COVID drives this. We must do better.

Thanks @RevBillCrews @2GB873 - The dominance of JN.1 signifies a new era in the pandemic, the 4th after pre- vax, post-vax & omicron eras. Chronic effects the biggest concern. Simply have to take it more seriously. 2GB - Prof. Brendan Crabb (Covid JN.1)

Discussion on the impact of COVID mitigations in schools is welcome. But sweeping statements without context likely does more harm than good. A reminder, pre-vax, most Australians encountered neither the disease (thanks to suppression) nor substantial stay at home measures. 1/

Terrific. An "integrated strategy" for airborne-transmitted infections is a must. As is "a response that is evidence-informed rather than evidence-ignored." theconversation.com/a-pandemic-tha… via @ConversationEDU

Note also that in the last 2 years almost all Oz kids have been infected, many multiple times. This will not be consequence free to their health (with concerns over chronic impacts), to their parents/grandparents (+30,000 of who have died prematurely) & to schools attendance. 3/

Future responses should most definitely aim to be less disruptive to society, but that should not mean living with the disease and its consequences. We should aim to avoid both. We explain in our submission to the current COVID inquiry. burnet.edu.au/knowledge-and-… 4/end
