The social media posts made by my staffer earlier today were disturbing and reprehensible. With antisemitism on the rise in recent years and especially in recent weeks, cracking jokes about the holocaust isn't just disgusting, it's dangerous.

These antisemitic and misogynistic posts sickened me, and I have accepted his resignation effective immediately.

If approved, this could bring several opportunities for more efficient and sustainable travel options in CD13. We already opened the priority lane for the #2 bus on Alvarado, and we're excited to do the same across other busy corridors in our district!

Our statement on the removal of the fence surrounding Echo Park Lake:
This morning, contractors with the Department of Recreation & Parks began removing the temporary fence surrounding Echo Park Lake.

There will be service providers and outreach workers at the park 7 days-a-week, and we will have a team of unarmed responders available during nighttime hours if any issues arise at the park. Our entire team continues to communicate constantly and openly with trusted service providers, the Department of Recreation & Parks, and community leaders to ensure this process is successful.

We look forward to continuing our work with the community to achieve our shared goals for the park, which include:

Ensuring Echo Park Lake is safe, clean and accessible for all.

Implementing proven solutions to homelessness like proactive outreach and vital services.

Maintaining a community presence at the park 7-days-a-week.

Expanding programming at the park, including new events, movies, concerts and activities.

Improving accessibility to the park with sidewalk repai

On Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day today, we remember the 1.5 million victims of the 1915 genocide, and we also recognize the 150,000 indigenous Armenians displaced from their land since the 2020 Artsakh War.

Our full statement on the fence at Echo Park Lake
“In 2019, the previous administration in CD13 led a violent displacement of unhoused individuals and peaceful protestors at Echo Park Lake. The operation created a police zone with 400 armed officers that disrupted residents several blocks away and led to the LAPD detaining at least 16 journalists – all while connecting just 8% of people experiencing homelessness at the lake to anything resembling ‘permanent’ housing. As the final act of this rushed and failed plan, the office closed off the park to the community of neighbors, vendors, and visitors from across the City.

“Since then, a fence has surrounded Echo Park Lake. For many in the community, including myself, the fence symbolizes division and the biggest failure of homeless policy in the history of Los Angeles. As we said during the campaign last year, we plan to take down the fence and ensure the park is safe and welcoming for all residents.
“We will take down the fence, and we will take painstaking care to do it right, with more transparency, so the City can see once and for all that criminalization and segregation don’t solve homelessness.

“In addition to the fence, we’ve been working on a motion to improve even more access to the park. In collaboration with the Department of Transportation, we’re beginning the process of implementing several improvements to make the park much more accessible for our neighbors with disabilities. When we say this park’s for everyone, we mean it.

“We will provide relevant updates, including the exact date of the fence’s removal, as this work continues. We look forward to enjoying a truly open and accessible park with the community soon.”

Over 70% of tenants in LA are rent-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on rent. Almost half of tenants spend over 50% of their income on rent. We need publicly-funded affordable housing, and thanks to Measure ULA, we can make that happen.
    Breaking down terminology: Social Housing

We've introduced a resolution in Council with Councilmembers Eunisses Hernandez and Nithya Raman recognizing the need for Social Housing.

Swipe for more information on what Social Housing is, why it's important, and a vision for Social Housing in Los Angeles.
    What is Social Housing?

Social Housing provides City-owned land or existing buildings to community-led organizations to develop and manage housing directly.

This publicly-funded housing measure would help establish equity in housing affordability so that everyone can afford dignified housing.
    The Importance of Social Housing

Over 60% of Angelenos are renters. With an average one-bedroom apartment at $2,395 dollars a month, Los Angeles has become the most unaffordable city to rent in the U.S.

Social Housing gives communities the power to develop and manage homes. The housing market has been manipulated by corporate interests, which has resulted in increased costs for living, gentrification, and housing insecurity.
The importance of social housing, cont.

As Los Angeles continues to navigate the State of Emergency invoked to combat the homelessness crisis, expanding access to affordable housing is a necessary measure to support our unhoused neighbors.

The passage of Measure ULA last November allowed access to hundreds of millions of dollars to utilize City-owned land and property to support efforts to expand permanent, affordable housing. By using the Social Housing model, the cost of rent stays affordable and provides tenants with a pathway to homeownership. It offers an option to earn equity in property to Angelenos who haven't had the opportunity due to disenfranchisement, discrimination and redlining.

Yesterday, we had a great meeting with the President of @TeamLocal399, Lindsay Dougherty. Local 399 is a union of 6,000 workers in the film industry who are absolutely essential to making Hollywood run – from warehouse workers, to drivers, to couriers, to casting and more.

Today, City Council approved a measure led by @cd4losangeles that would delay a huge fee increase facing street vendors while the city determines a fair fee schedule. This will give relief to countless vendors working to provide for their families here in LA.
