#OTD in #history, 1963, #JFK was killed. His life was cut short. But his aspirations were not. Inspired in part by his legacy, much of what he hoped was soon achieved, like Medicare, civil rights reform, and a man on the moon. "A man may die," JFK argued, "but an idea lives on."

#OTD in #History, 1963, #POTUS John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Americans had been overwhelmingly optimistic about the #USA's future. Thus, for many, as the @nytimes' James Reston described, “what was killed in Dallas was not only the president but the promise.”

#OTD in #History, 1968, Bobby Kennedy was assassinated. "My brother need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life," Ted Kennedy eulogized. But "remembered simply as a good & decent man, who saw wrong & tried to right it, saw suffering & tried to heal it."

#RIP Betty White. This is her portraying a Senator in 1962's "Advise & Consent," a cautionary tale about fearmongering during the McCarthy era. The clamor to see Henry Fonda during filming @ the #Capitol was so disruptive to #Congress, it was 1 of the last films given such access

Listen my children & you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere. For #OTD in '75 militia was warned of British near. The target was Concord to capture our arms, so off rode many to tell those on farms. Then 1 day after their heroic night—at Lexington—began freedom's fight

#OTD in #history, 1941, the #USA was attacked at #PearlHarbor. In less than 90 minutes, 19 warships and 300 aircraft were damaged or destroyed, and 2,400 servicemen died, prompting the #UnitedStates' entry into #WWII. The scars of that day can still be visited—and felt—today.

At the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month, 1918, #WW1 ended. As the #USA @DeptVetAffairs explains, Nov. 11—#VeteransDay—remains “A celebration to honor #America’s #veterans for their #patriotism, love of country, & willingness to serve & sacrifice for the common good.”

#OTD in #history, 2019, the @airandspace Museum marked the 50th anniversary of the #Apollo11 Moon Landing on the @NationalMallNPS, notably projecting a 363-foot life-sized image of the #SaturnV rocket on the Washington Monument thanks to a Joint Resolution of the 116th Congress.

#OnThisDay in #history, 1775, the Continental #Congress established the #USArmy. Two years later, also #OTD, it adopted the #USA's stars & stripes—why June 14 is #FlagDay. The "thirteen stars, white on a blue field" represented more than "a new constellation." But a new promise.

#OTD in #History 1945, George #Patton passed away. Having chased the Nazis from #France, the French offered #Napoleon’s tomb for burial. But his wife buried him next to those killed at the Battle of the Bulge. She explained, “George would want to lie beside the men of his #Army.”

#OTD in #history, 1863, Lincoln gave his #Gettysburg Address. "A great civil war" was testing whether a "nation...dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal...can long endure." It was the meaning of the American experiment. And the consequence if it fails. #USA

#OTD in #history, 1963, #JFK's funeral was held, watched on TV by nearly every #USA adult. LBJ memorialized him by offering us a path forward: “he lived long enough and well enough to...reaffirm our commitment as a people to the great purpose for which this nation was created.”

#OTD in #history 1920, the #19Amendment was ratified, guaranteeing women’s suffrage. Harry Burn, a young #Tennessee legislator, held the deciding vote. He stated, “I knew that a mother’s advice is always safest for a boy to follow and my mother wanted me to vote for ratification”

#OTD in #History, 1776, the #USA triumphed over the Hessians at Trenton. #GeorgeWashington had hoped for a “lucky blow” to “rouse the spirits of the people, which are quite sunk by our misfortunes.” But at Trenton, the #USArmy did more than rouse spirits. It saved the revolution.
