🧵 Thread: We're deeply disappointed that the Government will not be producing a ten-year mental health and wellbeing plan, and that the promised white paper on health disparities will also no longer be delivered. 1/

Some of the responses to #NaomiOsaka show that deep-seated prejudices about mental health still need to be rooted out. Read our full response here: centreformentalhealth.org.uk/news/responses…
Tennis court image with quote: “We are deeply disappointed and saddened that when Naomi Osaka asked for support and understanding for her mental health, both the tennis authorities and some UK media commentators have reacted so rigidly and shown so little compassion”

We'll respond to the report once it's released in full, but these early reports are extremely concerning. The notion that institutional #racism does not exist, or has no impact on inequalities in society, flies in the face of the evidence shared by ourselves and others.

THREAD: Today the Secretary of State for Work & Pensions said that ‘mental health culture has gone too far’, and announced plans to downgrade benefits for people with mental health problems. This is dangerous and won't help people into work. Our response 👇

We're delighted to announce that our Board of Trustees have appointed @Andy__Bell__ as our new chief executive! 🎉 Read our statement in full: centreformentalhealth.org.uk/news/centre-me…
Picture of Andy Bell on black background. Teal box with text: Centre for Mental Health has been challenging mental health inequalities for nearly four decades. We’ve got a lot more to do. Too many people’s mental health is put at risk by poverty, inequality, racism and discrimination. People living with mental health difficulties don’t always get the right support where and when they need it. We’ll keep working to change that and put social justice at the heart of mental health policy. Andy Bell

The Prime Minister’s claims of a ‘sicknote culture’ where mental ill health is confused with ‘everyday worries’ are not based on robust evidence - and could lead to policies that do more harm than good. Our response in full 👇🧵
