Existing search tools on Windows suck. Even with an SSD, it’s painfully slow. So I built a prototype of Nowgrep. It bypasses most of the slow Windows nonsense, and just parses the raw NTFS. On an SSD, this ends up faster than ripgrep, even on a cached run (Nowgrep bypasses

I have decided to ship Nowgrep. A first Windows Beta will be released on 21th of November. Hold me accountable. Goals for first release: - Caching/content indexing to make searching even faster - Clean, good looking, and snappy UX - Minimal, standalone .exe file (aiming for <

This has gone through my mind multiple times as a recent windows update seems to have broken the start button search. When I open it, it's stuck for multiple seconds, sometimes in the tens, until I can start typing. I completely snap out of deep focus every time it happens.

Nowgrep searches file contents. Finding file names is easy enough to do instantly (there's no excuse for it to not be instant). Nowgrep does this if you leave the search field empty.

I am currently available for hiring. Remote only, based in Sweden. Preferably something in games/compilers/graphics or any low level programming. If you know of anything, please let me know.

Windows API lets you CreateFile on a volume label to get a HANDLE that lets you read the entire partition from start to end. You do need admin rights though.

This whole thing would not have happened without you Casey. You do not need to sign up for anything, you are implicitly invited.

I have lost count of how many people have been suggesting Everything, and other file name search tools, to me. I guess I could have been more clear about it in the post, but I thought people generally know what grep is.

Also sidenote: "Everything" runs a background service on your computer which I find a bit tasteless.

I want to make Nowgrep. But I need to eat, so I need to know whether or not I can make money of it. So I'm wondering: Would you pay $19 for a polished and snappy Nowgrep with good UX, that beats any other search program so far? If no: Why, and would you pay a lower sum? I

I haven't. I'll check it out. Note that this demo includes every single file on the drive (hidden, system, symlinks, etc).
