Dear college student-athletes, I know you have A LOT going on..it can be tough, overwhelming, even isolating. Keep going..keep moving forward, even if you feel like you’re in a hamster wheel. You are LIVING life lessons,& you are so much better for it Sincerely, A coach who cares

Walk into a HS gym in a small Midwest town at the end of girls JV game. Packed. Entire town here to support on a Friday night. The smell of popcorn, energy from the band, the squeaks of sneakers on the hardwood. Nothing better. HS players, ENJOY it. It’s a beautiful thing 🏀

Recruits: It’s not about the buildings, landscape, facilities…those things can’t change how you feel. They can’t help support you when you struggle, develop, or challenge you for more. Things can’t do that, only people can. People will make your college experience, not things.

I miss going to watch HS basketball games. I miss driving through small towns, I miss the friendly greeting of a volunteer selling tickets, I miss sitting on bleachers in gyms packed with members of the local community, & above all..I miss watching kids play the game they love 🏀

Good coaches dont compromise their non-negotiables. They stand strong in what they value, set high standards, & hold everyone accountable to it Good coaches dont coach to make friends, they coach to create better people. Coaching is not a popularity contest, it’s leadership

Best thing I’ve witnessed all day... Player goes up to her dad after game. Dad: Did you have fun? ...let’s not forget why we do what we do in the first place. Well done, dad. Your daughter will play at the next level & appreciate the joy of the game, largely thanks to you.

I like workers…people who just put their head down & work. No talk, no complaining, no wishing, no looking to their left or right to see who’s watching…nothing but intentional, purposeful work. Workers may not always win in the moment…but they most certainly win in the end.

I don’t know if former players will ever fully understand how much joy it brings their coach to get a call, text, postcard, picture, letter from a former player just checking in. To all the former players out there who do that…it matters, because you matter to them. Thank you.

Sitting here watching AAU and it is the worst to watch coaches who do nothing but yell AT their kids...key words, 'their kids.' Coaches, they are YOUR KIDS. Coach them, teach them, challenge them, help them...that is your job. Yelling & berating them is not coaching. Be better.

Recruits: Go where you are wanted. College coaches will all tell you they want you through conversation, a scholarship offer, ‘liking’ your posts… The ones who really want you will show you through their ACTIONS. Talk is easy…action is the separator.

I love being a coach. So so much. The relationships formed with players, past & present, are everything. I’ve coached some awesome humans who will do great things with their lives after sport. Again, I love being a coach. So so much.

Future College Student-Athletes: Go where you are wanted, really wanted. Go where the coaches check in with YOU…not just on how you played, not just after a ‘good’ game. Offers are cool, talking hoops is great, but follow through & authentic recruitment is the real deal!
